A few years back, I think it was 2001, I got a bill from AT&T Cellular, which I hadn't had an account with for a year or so, for $0.00. I ignored it, got an overdue notice the next month for $0.00, so I sent them a check for $0.00 and they went away.
One time, back in the 80s, I got ripped off of a dime in a payphone (In Massachusetts) and called to report the phone out of order. They took my name and address and send me a check for the ten cents. I never cashed it...I recall that it came in a wastefully thick and formal envelope and 20 lb paper with a watermark, with a form letter apology. I mean, this was almost card stock. I just wanted them to fix the damn phone, which it took them forever to do.
