Engineers are troublesome 'expert loners', says prof

Engineers who can combine technical with people skills tend to make mad money so there may be some truth to this, especially in combination with sales or even legal areas.

"There have been efforts to make dazzlers using lasers, but LEDs could be a safer choice. "Getting an eye-safe wavelength with a laser has been very difficult," Shwaery says. Because laser beams are energetic and focused, they could cause permanent damage to the eye."

This is the old vomit flashlight using lasers instead, hopefully without blinding some of the people.

How about

A free "lottery" scratchcard with 2 plays, put HIV into a special bous box so avoid giving the wrong impression.

The STD game "ironic win" would be odds similar to real life so 1/3 for genital herpes , and the second play would be for a condom voucher sponsered by Durex or whoever. Surely they want to get brand loyalty early and increased sales.

The DVLA are giving away free cars from SEAT if you do the car tax online and they say it's legit because it's no cost to them and promotes a low CO2 model which coincides with their aims.

Half Life 2 used for firefight fire drill

Gamers did better

The IT geeks in the Army have to do some physical training and occasionaly a mock firefight.

The attemps are similar, run into an enemy fortified position and spray and pray before running off again, dodging enemy "bullets" and making it back to safety.

Rinse and repeat using one man each time until the enemy are taken out, or rush in all at once and lose 90% of the team but keep some alive to claim victory. Statistically they have a good chance of missing you, whereas the IT geek has multiple targets and only minutes to live.

EA in Spore DRM climbdown

EA comment

The spokesman must be being deliberatley obtuse, the issue isn't with playing the game on multiple seperate computers, it is with reinstalling it on a single computer multiple times such as after upgrading a component or reinstalling the OS.

The renting analogy carries over to reselling it, there is no way to prove there are activations remaining meaning no secondhand market for these titles such as eBay.

You missed the main character

One Eyed Jack.

Reading through the summaries of this type of literature, the first 20 all involve the man being shot, drowned, stabbed, kidnapped, imprisoned , suffering from a non infectious or icky illness, comatose, dying from a poison or having to fight to survive or having just killed someone in self defence to defend their honor.

It seems women want the first step to be a man who is weak or has to rely totally on them, while being powerful and dangerous in the eyes of everyone else and that all other women will try and fail to steal him.

UK bank chief stung in ID theft scam

God, sorry

I Can't remember my password

What is your address, DOB, the last purchase you made with the card and your mothers given name.

Oh yes wait, it's on this statement I picked up and the DOB is from a website such as xxxxx with complete Births Mariiges and Deaths up to 1983.

Why I was calling, well I've just moved address, terrible hassle, yes I know, anyway lost the cards.... and the limit. can that be raised whilst i'm on the phone anyway.

Fantastic, see you in hell.

Mystery web attack hijacks your clipboard

This will probably get ignored, but anyway.

The overwriting firefox/IE clipboard has been available for a long time. I imagine these users, (although I haven't read all the four forums and subsequent links for each post)

had a window hidden from them or a frame around a webpage. The only change is to use it for spamming links which is a nice human touch to spreading spam, lots of people Ctrl-C-V without thinking.

It overwrites anything you have in clipboard without requiring any action such as clicking or selecting, you do need flash and javascript running which 99% do.

For an example,

clipboard.swf is (I think from decompiling it)

// Action script...

// [Action in Frame 1]

if (clipboard.length)

} // end if

The script is, according to google search

function copy(inElement) {

if (inElement.createTextRange) {

var range = inElement.createTextRange();

if (range && BodyLoaded==1)

} else {

var flashcopier = 'flashcopier';

if(!document.getElementById(flashcopier)) {

var divholder = document.createElement('div');

divholder.id = flashcopier;

document.getElementById(flashcopier).innerHTML = '';

var divinfo = '<embed src="_clipboard.swf" FlashVars="clipboard='+escape(inElement.value)+'" width="0" height="0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed>';

document.getElementById(flashcopier).innerHTML = divinfo;

Secret of invisibility unravelled by US researchers

Visible wavelength

Spy Drones can remain silent, still, and drop their heat radiation to background levels. If they were to glide or scuttle in at night (very slowly), refuelling on local power lines or perhaps focusing sunlight, they could sit for months sending back bursts of data alongside other comms traffic to drones circling in random patterns overhead.

Humans couldn't see them with thermal acousitc or visible wavelengths.Eventually, by using GPS correction and working amongst themselves they can provide targets to airborne drones to take out along with corrections and success rates. Afterwhich they are collected and dropped far enough away from the next target to crawl towards it.

Women tend to be better at this kind of thing, like welding it requires good hand to eye co-ord, patience and reliable performance levels on every operation. Welding offers artistic expression and instant job satisfaction though, the very best welders are all female.

There isn't the physical side of G-forces or enemy capture, instead of the single minded focus of men, who get fustrated and lapse in concentration, the women would be more likely to suffer boredom instead of failure but still operate well.

Not to say women would find it exciting but they could do a much better job without suffering the stress or the autistic focus men have.

Criminal record checks could hit over 14 million people

According to the Home Office.gov.uk. Those convicted of sexual assults against adults over 50% have known their victims for less than 24 hours. Those convicted of offences against children, in 70% of cases victims were confined to the offenders own family unit.

80% of those serving a sentence for an offence against a child , and 75% of those against an adult had no previous convistion for a sexual offence.

A third of those imprisoned for an offence against a child outside their own family had a history of known sexual offending.

Or 94% of child abusers will not show up in background checks. Of those who operate outside the family unit,

2/3rds had no record of sexual offences of any kind, Of the 1/3rd who did have a history of sexual offences, they were still able to commit sexual offences against children outside the family unit. The register did not stop them from reoffending.

Beijing scales back RFID ticket plans

Worth mentioning

China is managing One Billion RFID ID cards, now that market is ending they are tagging animals used in food production. Customs use it for container tagging, security, vehicles.

They are tagging "everything" even if it doesn't move. Makes the UK ID card system look jolly backward.

The trains used to have a early coin shaped RFID token system between Shengzen and Guangzhou , which I took home with me for study.

I'm suprised all the tickets will not be enabled, China could pull it off but maybe it just isn't worth the expense. They are at least 6 years ahead of any other country in RFID production and usage.

UK.gov serves up GM food as price hike fix

If there are about 25 million households, 4 million tons of food a year is only about 136 Kilos or 300 pounds per household.

Over a year, about 6 lbs a week of waste food, per household.

Considering we have a very efficient food supply chain, caterers have huge wastage, also people are eating less food than 30 years ago through inactivity. How will any measures be able to improve on this household figure.

Blind spot - the trouble with optical drives

For some reason, people dislike caddies or protecive covers for their disks.

Why this is I have no idea.

There is still the method of opening caddies putting in blu-ray discs and then automating the system, not very complex to change the drives themselves, compared to other systems.

Congress still afraid to define 'internet gambling'

Apart form the link between shares, perhaps more so futures and geared betting.

Many of these sites offer bets on the third decimal point of an index in the next 10 seconds and other variants, blurring the line between investing and betting.

Even more so some spread betting sites operate internal markets where information is imported but no trades made by the users go out into the world, also bullion vaults who offer gold pricing use the same method. Sometimes trading is further divorced and more like betting when time delays and lock outs are imposed during opening and closing volatility.

Are these any different to roulette and a random number generator operated by a gaming site?

Webmasters on a few major & minor sites put it in, AVG correctly scans and reports the risk, pissed off user, good result for owners. Plus they can constantly update by checking with AVG what triggers it, and implementing that as a dummy false positive.

Police probe pirate-DVD detecting dog's demise

I have a pack of blank Dvds opened last month, they still have a strong smell. The manafacturers use different dyes but there must be a common base for them with the cheap discs pirates will use.

Not that they can say it is pirated, but I doubt people smuggle them on a plane. Shipping it in a container makes more sense, and dogs would show up wrongly labeled cargo, or be able to search warehouses for hidden stashes.

ESA: space tourism greener than ordinary airline flights

Surely if this leads to technology enabling the hop out of heavy thick air for London Sydney trips, then it's a good thing. Because the future technology will quickly cover the testing phase in emissions if it works.

Same as as Prius may be a crap car, but one generation creates the next, so research into batteries etc has funding. Eventualy you get a massive payback from the drivers or flyers of tomorrow using the tech covering any false starts or prototypes.

Plus anyone who stands in the way of space exploration just makes my heart sink right to the floor. The idea of greens holding it back is enough to get me mad (in the Groucho Marx imagined argument way).

Social networking site bans oldies over sex offender fears

The owners of faceparty

I've never heard of faceparty, but wanted to checkout the twats, and keep it real, in with the youth, no facist parents, or society moaners.

Faceparty admission is now strictly by invitation only ...Name's not down? Ya' not comin' in!

With our doors open to everyone, this site was attracting too many spammers, fakers, pervs, liars, haters, nobs, pedos, over-50's-using-it-as-a-dating-site-cos-they-have-to-pay-for-match.com's, and most of all... too many friggin' moaners! We'd spend all day deleting them, but alas (aarrggghh!) they'd only return the next day. Not anymore... problem solved. Hooray!

...and besides, we'd rather be the best than the biggest.

You need to be invited by someone-in-the-know ...and you certainly won't be getting a password by pestering us, so please stop! We gotta get tough, cos if we're not, this place 'aint gonna rock... and if there's one last thing on this crazy planet we're gonna do? it's see this place ROCK!

Yay!!! Type that supa-secret password in the box below, between the hours of midnight and 1am, to go to the new member application form. You will need a digital photo of yourself in order to join.

I hereby do declare, and solemnly swear, that I won't act like a prick, I'm not a judgemental fool, I believe in racial and sexual equality, I'm not a pedo, I've not lied about my age, I'm not a spammer, I won't nick anyone's pics, I will never refer to faceparty as a "social network"*, I will never call Faceparty "Facebook" by mistake, I will try my hardest not to moan all the time, I'm not a cam whore (nor a faker), I will perform at least one practical joke every 38 days... and most importantly, I genuinely value love before money (at least when I'm on 'ere, anyway). Amen.

I acknowledge that Faceparty was the world's first online community - that it's still here (if not a little ruff around the edges) and still hasn't sold out despite offers of 100s of millions, cos it's far more important that there's at least one thing on Earth that isn't owned by "the man", where we can all truly be ourseves and not just another digit on a bank statement.

Go on, give us a big hug, and get ur fat ass in here...

Welcome aboard! ...you're in for one hell of a ride ;)

* Faceparty is a community, which is the absolute opposite of a Social Network. There'll be no social climbing here ...we're all equally rubbish and we certainly don't give a f*ck about what you do for a living, or rate you by how many 'linked friends' you've clicked on, so leave any ideas of 'networking' at the door - we're only interested in your big heart, participation and personality ...and if you dont feel you've got one of those, we'll give you one :P

Is this some giant windup because it sounds like an old guy who wants pictures, to keep it all secret and trying to "identify" with the kids.

Asus speaks out on UK Eee PC 900 battery issue

statutory rights punk

These extended warranties are pointless. I would expect an Asus Eee PC to last for at least 2 years anyway.

Guarantees are "in addition to", not "a replacement of" statutory rights and the PC must be of merchantable quality & "fit for the purpose it was made for". If the screen went or the speakers broke after a year through a major fault or inherent issue I could claim anyway. Accidental damage isn't covered so no benefit to me.

Give me the battery instead.

This is the same as Washing machines, where they offer 5 years warranty or 3 year coverage. I am covered anyway because any court is going to agree a washing machine should last more than 12 months. I suppose the question is why do computers have such short "accepted" lifespans for a very very expensive home item.

Tory proposes street-legal Segway legalisation

Mobility Scooter

Class 3 vehicles are those with an upper speed limit of 8 mph (12 km/h) and are equipped to be used on the road as well as the pavement.

These vehicles MUST NOT be used on motorways (see Rule 253). They should not be used on unrestricted dual carriageways where the speed limit exceeds 50 mph (80 km/h) but if they are used on these dual carriageways, they MUST have a flashing amber beacon. A flashing amber beacon should be used on all other dual carriageways (see Rule 220).

Great, Segways on a 70mph stretch with maber lights. If they want to follow this up, just copy the mobility scooters law.

Google under fire again for handing user info to police

So was it legal

There seems to be some confusion.

There was no court order or legal action, was there?, "we provided Indian law enforcement authorities with the IP address information they requested in this case" they requested information, just like they do in any country.

If the company is like Google they will act on the mere possibility and take the easiest route , or help China in filtering search results. Because Google is not a charity, it's a n advertiser out to make money

Why should they deal with the hassle and possible legal problems, it's not their job.

Privacy? Forget it. Sell your brain and desires to the highest bidder

Paris Hilton

The future is creating value in the data we give away for free, no wonder there is such disdain for privacy amongst companies and governments, it has no monetary value in this market.

People have attempted to purchase this data through offering free or enhanced services yet we continue to give it away for nothing. Consumers can safeguard their privacy by grouping up and selling on.

Once our privacy has value, scavangers must compete not only for access but to protect that data bounty. Currently Google reward us with a simple search engine , that's it. They create none of the content or infastructure, yet advertisers pay them Billions for the chance to place a few lines of text on a page.

Stop being a slut with your data, Google are at least charging a few cents for each nibble.

We need Privacy Pimps for the data whores, or something.

How viruses seem to spread in an anthropomorphic manner to me.

Bit offtopic but made me think of an old idea.

I thought a great method of predicting human virus distribution would be bluetooth enabled phones set up to deliberately and safely infect each other, in cooperation with the owner. So an infected person stepping onto a train would then pass it on, and so on until everyone is a carrier.

Then map back the process, because each phone using basic triangualtion would immediately upload a simple infected mesasage with loaction, time and also infected phones it found so far, plus repeated infection attempts. This would ideally be a beneficial parasitic realtionship so free porn or something for all participants, or fixing security risks in devices so it remains part of the system benefiting the owner.

Similar to the late 90's mapping of virus infected computers sleeping on one side of the globe (from being turned off) then waking up as if following dawn and work start times around the world.

Someone needs to do some pretty pictures and CGI to represent this stat.

Home Secretary goes crazy on drugs... policy

The usual

If only the Labour Home Secretary would take notice of the rising GHB/GBL problem, according to the EU EMCDDA report on GHB and one of it's precursors GBL the sale is steady at around 3-7% of illicit drug use.

GBL is sold legally in the EU for cleaning chrome, car wheels, part of nail care products but metabolises into GHB once drops are ingested. The conversion rate and the short time for testing , (around 18 hours for urine, 8 for blood is the time limit for detection) mean it can be used as a date rape drug the same as GHB or a recreational drug because it basically is GHB. The human body does the chemistry.

Even the UK ACMD report on "Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault" which includes all drugs such as alcohol, says as the first point.

1) A proposal for the ACMD to examine measures for restricting the availability of

gamma butyrolactone (GBL) and 1, 4-butanediol.

Although nobody needs "1, 4-butanediol" when most sales according to the BBC in Dec 2007 are now GBL instead of GHB so the market is using it straight.

Gallons of GBL can be purchased easily and resold for a massive profit, the lack of joined up thinking with the Home Secretary on cannabis and failing to follow the advice given, will I hope not be the case with GBL.

Let's get industrial chemists to add dyes, unpleasent tastes and smell and even cause vomiting and nausea to people who try to ingest GBL or use it to commit date rape, sexual abuse and so on.

Of course this involves some work, not just talking to journalists over coffee while completely ignoring the advice of those who have worked hard to provide a clear report such as ACMD, EMCDDA etc.

Cow turds fuel Blighty's hydrogen filling station embrace

Veg Oil

It costs more than Diesel in Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Makro, etc. Just from checking the websites right now. £1.10 per liter for dirt cheap rapeseed oil.

The straight vegetable oil SVO is more expensive than Diesel and waste vegatable oil WVO is being collected by suppliers to resell. There was about enough oil being delivered to the imaginary chip shop to power the lorry delivering it, the myth of everyone powering their cars off the local chippy never worked unless only one guy in a town wanted the waste oil from all the providers.

I got a cheap Citroen ZX with a Bosch fuel pump (without any intent to use SVO/WVO) , so could run 50/50 or higher SVO/Diesel with no modifications or cold start problems. There is no cheap oil at the moment.
