Music biz pot calls Apple black

GHok

Game Over

This is what's happening with music now... the music that the industry is pushing and distributing is terrible, and no one wants it. Music fans get their music elsewhere now. People depended on the industry before, but no longer. Your business model no longer works. Please try again.

The iPad: Unsubsidised, unaffordable, unloved?

GHok

Not useless.

If you play around with one, you can see why someone would want one. They're very useful for quick searches, just to have laying around. Now why anyone would fork over so much money for one is another thing. That's a lot of money for something I'd use to check email in bed, especially as my phone already does a decent job of that. Honestly, Apple does a good job of making these things "special" and status symbols. I'm sure they don't want these to be as disposable as mobile phones.

I don't know what Mobile carriers are like in the UK, but if they're anything like they are here, they deserve to be screwed in any way possible.

Apple files 'in your face' iPhone patent

GHok

Seems unlikely

Maybe they're thinking waaaaay down the line in terms of tech? Which, now-a-days may not actually be that far down the line in terms of years... Patent an accessory for something that hasn't been invented yet, and then wait for it to be invented.

Spider-Man director to helm World of Warcraft

GHok

Wah?

Because people who play WoW are really in it for the lore?

People love the Mario franchise, but they love it as a GAME... this is the same thing.

Not that I don't think the lore isn't moderatly interesting, but this movie is being made just because the studio thinks the name will be a draw. And when they think that then story tends to matter not one bit.

Still, while I'm no Raimi fanboy, a fantasy movie by him might be fun. Oh wait, didn't he do Xena? Meh, I saw that once or twice and hated it.

US kids busy bullying, sexy texting

GHok

No brainer

Is anyone surprised that teens are still acting like teens? So they have a new medium to play with.

GeoCities demolished

GHok

Hmmm

Where would one guy if one wanted to make a little website for free? I had a lot of fun as a young teen making webpages on various subjects through sites like Geocities. I guess kids today have to do that kind of thing on myspace or something, but what if you want to make a site that isn't about yourself? Or you know, be a little more creative than what myspace allows you to do? The easy answer would be to have your parents buy you some webspace, but if I had asked my parents for anything like that when I was young they would have thought it was a waste of money.

I should login to my old page and see what files are still there.

IT angle

911 is drilled into people's heads in the states. I doubt most people even know there's such thing as police non-emergency numbers.

If you want an IT angle, the reason this woman probably didn't get a refund is that I'm sure most cashier point of sale systems make it exceptionally inconvienent to do a refund. It's designed this way so the minimum wage workers there can't do fake refunds and take the money. If you get a cashier that doesn't want to deal with the hassle (which surpirse, may happen often when you're dealing with apathetic teenagers!), or simply doesn't have the authority because the only slightly higher paid supervisor is out for a smoke, you get a situation like this.

Anyone who has ever tried to do anything like a return or exchange at any major store should know what a big process it is. The cashier can't just open their register and give you back your money. I'm not even saying it's a bad system, but people should at least be aware of how things work.

It may help the bottom line for the company, and it may very well deter internal theft but it's a pain in the ass if you sell someone some nuggets and then it turns out you don't have any.

Brits 'a bunch of yellow bastards', says irate Yank

GHok

Hmm.

I would never own a gun, but I would be pretty unhappy if my government suddenly didn't allow me to have one. Considering how many guns are in the US it's amazing there isn't MORE violent crime. Sensible gun laws are needed to try and prevent people from amassing armies among other things. The answer isn't banning outright or allowing unrestricted access, but somewhere in the middle.

Seagate's complacency blasted away - what now?

GHok

Hmm

Considering my space needs haven't changed much in the last few years what I care about most is reliability. The warrantly length decrease from a few years back worried me. When a harddrive dies, it's such a pain in the ass.

Of course, if a company makes a good hard drive, I won't need to buy one again until it breaks... and if it's a good hard drive, it shouldn't break.

Of course, I'm just talking for home use. Thankfully there's a business sector that requires new stuff all the time, and I assume, keeps these companies trying to make reliable equiptment.

Sales show SanDisk's SD-not-CD player a hit with punters

GHok

Perfect...

I'm not interested in one, but it's perfect for the tween market. It's just a really simple delivery system for mp3s. You buy them in the store on a little card and put them in your little player. Much easier for kids to use than itunes, it's cheap, and there's something physical involved.

Algae-fuelled* airliner test successful

GHok

Hmm

"Also, since the US aircraft industry does its fuel calculations in pounds, those almost certainly *are* the original figures. Conversion to kilos might well introduce rounding errors though....."

Does it? I'll admit full ignorance here, but I know a lot of US science industries do use SI measurements because they're much easier to work with. Maybe not in normal fueling situations, but perhaps for a test flight. Again, that's only speculation... I don't actually know.

Could the Airbus A380 be the new Air Force One?

GHok

Yeah @ Graham

There is basically no chance that it'll go to anyone other than Boeing. Stranger things have happened, but I'd be really surprised.

Music labels in talks with Hulu

GHok

@ Cameron Colley

I like music videos. Every week I go online and queue up a bunch that look interesting and watch them.

There actually are still a lot of good music videos being made. I don't know about big stars like Rhianna, but a lot of the bands I listen to still make good videos. You're right though, I have seen some of the more mainstream videos and they are mostly just cell phone adverts. I haven't owned a TV in some time, but I understand that MTV and the like don't even bother showing videos anymore, as they can make more money showing TV shows.

A lot of artists are missing from this site I use to watch videos. I'm guessing this is because they don't have an agreement with that label or whatever. Which just means I miss out on discovering new bands from that label. Which is a shame, I'd like to watch those videos, but I'm not going to site hop to a dozen different services.

Google scrubs urinating woman from Street View

GHok

Well, she's obviously not too bright, but...

Maybe it's unrealistic to expect privacy if you're pissing in a public street, but I really hope we haven't reached an age where we should expect to be recorded all the time. That's pretty horrible. Does that mean someone can film me if I'm outside and do whatever they like with the images? She probably thought she MIGHT be seen by someone on the street, not have her picture shown all around the internet.

Last major VHS supplier ejects from tape biz

GHok

Blu Ray

I was a very very early adopter of DVD. I was excited to have an affordable way to watch movies in widecreen and better quality, the extra features were great too. I wasn't so much an adopter of DVD because it was better quality than VHS, but because VHS was such shit to begin with. Bluray doesn't interest me. I watch movies on a computer for the most part, never owned any home theatre equipment. Blueray's nice and all that, and I'll buy newer stuff on it when the price comes down. Otherwise DVD is good enough quality.

EA punts SecuROM-less games on Steam

GHok

Thanks EA

I was going to buy Spore, but decided not to when I found out it had SecuRom. So as sson as I heard this news I went on Steam and bought it. I don't buy all my games on Steam (I like manuals and having a physical copy...) but I do a few just because I think it's at least a DRM system that offers something to the user instead of just making things difficult.

I'm kind of disapointed in Spore, though. I thought I'd like it better. Too bad I didn't pirate it to try it out before buying!

Family Guy creator's sellout to Google almost complete

GHok

Lloyd

I actually don't own a television, but what I do watch of television (not very much) via DVD is normally British.

My comments mearly were trying to say that I think Family Guy hit its peak of popularity about three years ago here. That it's been losing popularity since then. I think it's something people still watch, but you're not going to find as many hardcore fans anymore. A very similar thing happened to South Park.

What I think about the quality of the show is irrelevant. I just don't the majority of it find it funny, despite the hints of cleverness that peak through once in a while. I was just trying to shed some light on why Macfarlane would be making the kind of "sellout" move the article suggests. Shows with endless pop culture references very rarely have legs.

Why you chose to take that as an insult and lash out, I don't know. Plenty of others disagreed with me without making xenophobic remarks.

North America entertainment includes more than mainstream US television, by the way. However, I do suppose that's where you're going to find the majority of dick and fart jokes that my "lacklustre" North American sense of humour just doesn't get. But as I said before, I watch very little television. Maybe your television is worse than here, I wouldn't really know.

GHok
Thumb Down

re: oh dear

I'd say the Simpsons was still funny for a few years after it put its name on everything (which wasn't that long after it started, really), but it stopped being worth watching about ten years ago now.

Is Family Guy still popular? I got the impression that even its fans found it rather tired by now. I think it reached its height about three years ago, at least here in North America. Personally, I've found it to be pretty terrible. There's about one brilliant joke an episode and the rest is just an exercise in being uncomfortable...

There's been just as much Family Guy merch been put out as there is Simpsons stuff, anyway.
