Councils look for 'good enough' IT solutions

I had been recently asked to quote for IT support for a local council.

I assessed their current IT use and immediate future needs. Open Source was better than any solution they had in mind, and i quoted them on such. This included training and implementation.

As my quote was much lower than any other tender, they dismissed me as being too cheap!

I have a useful contact in the council who actually recommended that i tender for this, i've also found out that they plan on paying just over twice as much as my tender, and getting 'trapped' in an MS world again.

And the councils complain they're short of finances!

grrr...

I've also been with 1&1 for many years, running a couple of root servers and only had a couple of minor probs. Once i'd spoken with a techie (in the UK!) they were resolved fairly quickly. (one even turned out to be my own fault!)

as a demon customer who has been with them almost since the beginning, I would hate to see demon being disolved into CW.

over the years I have been more than happy with them even during the hard times they experience during their rapid expansion when the internet took off in the UK.

I am even happy to wait to see what adsl2 offerings they come up with.

my only other alternative would be to sell my soul and move onto the Be network (2 happy clients on there atm.. tempting)
