It's Silicon Glen All Over Again

Government puts up big grants to secure hi-tec spend. Companies come in and take the grants. A few years down the line an emerging economy does the same. Company moves on.

Technology moves fast but so does the global economy. It sucks, but it's reality.

BT to be freed from service obligations

Dan Atkinson

About time too

BT's been private for far too long to be tied to the public service obligations of a nationalised company. It'll be interesting to see who gets lumbered with the red boxes though.

2008's top three netbooks

So what if the AA1 is the Fiat Panda of netbooks?

Out of the box, The AA1 does exactly what it needs to do do an easily acceptable level. With the addition of VLC Media Player it becomes a great portable movie player too. The battery could be better but who is ever away from a plug socket for longer than two hours? Unless you're relying on it for entertainment during long haul flights then what's the problem? Nobody should have it as their primary machine, but then who uses a netbook as their main machine anyway?

Like the Fiat Panda, it's ideal for doing 90% of most people's day to day stuff but you wouldn't want is as the main motor in the family, but I'd say the same about a Fiesta, Clio, Corsa etc...

Pleae God let it run Android

The irony of not being allowed to sell a phone with an open source OS would be beautiful.

Motorola do know that the fashionista are all Apple devotees don't they? Maybe they should target their own core market like ermmmm i dunno.... ermmmm OK - I give up.

Blu-ray Disc a 'bag of hurt', says Jobs

Stop

That's because quality isn't the reason we left VHS

The tech industry seems too hung up on us wanted improved quality - that's rot and the rise of MP3 as a format has proved it.

Most punters went from tapes to DVDs because it was a much much more convenient product to use. Ditto from vinyl to CDs. The (questionable) quality improvement was a bonus.

Consumers have moved from CDs to MP3 for convenience of menu screens, despite the deterioration in sound quality

Blu Ray to DVD is what Vista is to XP. Unless you take away people's choice most won't see a reason to switch.

I love it... conditionally!

If all you want to do is basic stuff including browsing, watching movies off a USB stick or basic word processing then it's great even without upgrading memory. Sure the battery time could be better but that's the only downside. That'd only be a problem on long journeys and most long distance trains have power sockets anyway. I don't believe for a second that there's any reg reader that would buy it as a main machine, and nor should they. The Linpus OS isn't as easy to install to as Windows but can't be many readers incapable of getting under the bonnet to add VLC and Skype. After that I don't know what else you'd want on a chuck around portable.

Bless 'em

I always liked the fp ethos - clapped out clubbers from the days before parties became corporate running a site for the bored, the desperate and the hopeless (oops - was that supposed to read 'cool and single'?). I doubt that there will ever be a more complete selection of manual labourers displaying their torsos or single mothers pouting desperately in to their webcams on display in one place ever again.

A tragedy that they never got to sell out. It should be bought by the nation for posterity.
