iPlayer chief pushes tiered charging for ISPs

JJ Mail

Get orf ma' land!

Alternatively, the money grabbing bastards could make the iPlayer a subscription based service. BBC does some sort of deal with ISPs. Subscriber pays for bandwidth tier they require, a percentage goes to the BBC and a percentage to the ISP. But then, as the BBC is only too aware, a subscription model might just expose how unpopular and unessential it really is.

BBC's TV detector vans to remain a state secret

Shills....shills, shills, shills....

I just love all the shills (great word!) on here comparing the punative licence tax to Sky subscription - the BBC/TVL/Crapita really have got their PR agencies working overtime tonight. Of course, the point they all conveniently forget to mention is that if you fail to keep up your Sky subscription you get cut off, but if you have the temerity to not pay the TV licence tax (for any number of genuine and completely legal reasons) you are constantly threatened with a hefty fine and/or imprisonment. All for a bloody TV, that most essential of appliances without which we would all die. The fact that we, the UK sheeple, continue to let this anachronistic leech suck us dry with barely a whimper of discontent is the real tragedy du jour. Viva la revolution!

AVG chokes fake traffic spew

Grisoft mea culpa

Love the self-deluded spin on their press release. Grisoft, you need a re-shuffle in your marketing department and a new PR agency. AVG V8 programmers, hang your heads in shame. Grisoft, your new mission statement is K.I.S.S. Looking forward to the streamlined, small-footprint version 9 (ie. re-badged version 7) edition.

AVG disguises fake traffic as IE6

AVG has "jumped the shark"!

I have not renewed my AVG subscription and have replaced it with Avast instead. Avast seems to do exactly what it says on the tin with no fuss and no nannying, just like AVG used to before doing the software equivalent of jumping the shark. I have cancelled my Google Adwords campaign since I don't trust Grisoft's statement that LinkScanner does not affect paid-for links. How can anyone trust a company that, with breath-taking contempt for their existing (and previously very loyal) customers, insists on delivering a bloated product that attempts to conceal itself while eating up bandwidth, all in the name of marketing. AVG is now malware in all but name but unfortunately Grisoft are beyond listening as the few PR agency funded comments in this thread demonstrate. They are trying to defend the indefensible by paying someone to post pro comments, Pat/Roger et al.

The only way to make your point is to hit them where it hurts - STOP GIVING GRISOFT YOUR MONEY!

AVG scanner blasts internet with fake traffic

Grisoft/AVG knows best....

Regardless of the performance impact on the day-to-day use of the net, this seems very dodgy business practice at best. I would be very suprised if Google does not have something to say about this since it directly affects their business of serving up search result pages and which in turn affects their paying customers, AdWords, AdSense, etc. What happens if LinkScanner generates a false positive for a site? This may impact on the revenue of said site. Surely strong grounds for all manner of lawsuits? Possibly a reason why Grisoft are keen to remove the identifying string from the log files.
