Apple nabs smartphone top spot from Samsung, but for how long?

Gis Bun

Re: Never is a long time

>> Samsung Galaxy S* range are priced in the same area as the iPhone.

You sure about that? Apple barely drops the price except when they want to dump stock. Samsung models tend to drop in price within a month.

Gis Bun

Only a temporary thing. Apple released the iPhone 7 - so all the fanbois and fangurls waited in line to get it. Plus it came out before the holidays. Samsung still had decent sales even with the Note 7 mess. Samsung will be back on top when the Galaxy S8 comes out very soon.

Apple weans itself off Intel with 'more ARM chips' for future Macs

Gis Bun

Reduce the cost to make a Mac and not pass the saving to the consumer. Perfect!

Apple goes global in Qualcomm license war: Patent spat hits China

Gis Bun

Re: @Steve Davies 3

They probably have in-house lawyers. Gives them something to do. Paid whether or not they are busy with lawsuits.

Gis Bun

Apple can do this but it doesn't mean Qualcomm will sell parts to Apple again. Qualcomm isn't forced to sell to Apple. on the other hand, it is a big purchase.

Trump lieutenants 'use private email' for govt work... but who'd make a big deal out of that?

Gis Bun

Republicans are all hypocrites.

Oh. There is no way of knowing if the party's server is more secure than Clinton's server.

Meanwhile, according to hacker WauchulaGhost [who claimed to have hacked 500 pro-ISIS accounts], the Twitter accounts for Trump, Melania Trump and Mike Pence are more vulnerable to hackers because of a basic Twitter security setting they're not using. With a little bit of work "he" figured out that the Twitter account for Pence is a associated with a less secure Gmail account and both Trumps also use Gmail accounts.

Trump also using a non-government issued Android phone for his personal use still.

Not made in the USA. More like designed. If it was made then add $150 to the price.

Trump fan Peter Thiel 'considering' CA Terminator role*

Gis Bun

California is a Democrat state. Only reason why Arnie got in was that he's a Tinsletown celebrity [not saying he did a bad job as the Governator].

For Thiel, I wouldn't bother if [as expected] Trump makes a mess of the US.

It's now 2017, and your Windows PC can still be pwned by a Word file

Gis Bun

Meanwhile 2 Linux OSs topped 2016 with the most CVEs reported. So is Windows that vulnerable?

Anti-smut law dubs PCs, phones 'pornographic vendor machines', demands internet filters

Gis Bun

"...acknowledge the receipt of a written warning about the dangers of deactivating the filters..." Dangers? Like? Seeing someone showing a buttock or something? It's not like texting while driving.

Oh Britain. Worried your routers will be hacked, but won't touch the admin settings

Gis Bun

ISPs should find a way to block out routers that have the default password enabled and block the user until they change it.

It's been quite a few years since router manufacturers forced you on first usage to change the default password. So any of these older ones are unsupported by now and probably don't even have the latest firmware.

I was happy to see my new TP-Link Archer C2600 force me to not only change my password but also the default name [from "admin"].

Re: bah

"...but who protect us against Microsoft?" - The federal government. France is still trying to get them to reduce the amount of data grabbed.

Gis Bun

Re: Rule number 0

Oh I don't think Microsoft goes after individuals as much as the people who pirate their software en masse.

"But getting rid of Windows altogether would be much nicer...." Buy yourself a Mac! Ha. Ha. Ha.

Gis Bun

Face it. You will have those that will whine that even turning all this stuff off will still mean too much data for Microsoft.

One poster [elsewhere] claimed that Microsoft makes millions a year by selling your data - which would be illegal to do and the poster had nothing to back up the claim except his/her conspiracy theories.

A reminder that Windows 7 has telemetry features. I'm sure some didn't know that....

So instead of whining, grab some of the tools out there from Spybot and O&O and disable what you can and use a local account.

Typical Apple. They think killing the percentage will make the problem go away.

Are you listening, Mr Trump? World's largest tech distie is now owned by the Chinese

Gis Bun

Add Softbank who claims it will add 50,000 jobs in the US [at least not burger flippers] and Foxconn exploring to build gadgets in the US. We'll see if either follow through. Foxconn has a history of not doing what they say.

Meanwhile I wonder how many tax incentives it will cost the government.

HMS Illustrious sets sail for scrapyard after last-ditch bid fails

Gis Bun

Sell it to the Russians. Supposedly the Russian carrier they sent to bombard Syrian "rebels" is falling apart badly. Only 25 working toilets for 2000+ sailors [I would guess less toilets if the captain and senior staff have their own!]

Netflix Canada get maybe a quarter of the [good] content that Netflix US gets. Takes a few months before it comes to Canada.

Uh. Why? Already paying federal & provincial taxes on my monthly bill.

Lenovo: If you value your server, block Microsoft's November security update

Gis Bun

Why am I not surprised with Lenovo. So far I haven't seen any announcements from HPE, Dell or others with this issue. Always seems to be Lenovo [whether the server division or laptops/desktops] where they seem to scr?w something up.

Gis Bun

Re: Go ahead

Maybe they don't think a kernel vulnerability is critical?

Gis Bun

Re: Go ahead

"...Lync is so bad that they replaced it with Teams...." And where is the official news release from Microsoft saying this? Ya. There isn't any. Nice dreaming.

Gis Bun

Re: Go ahead

Obama awards honours to Grace Hopper, Margaret Hamilton for computing contributions

I guess a few who were honored outside of the tech field were honored because they'd never be honored under a Trump administration: Bruce Springsteen, Robert Redford, Robert De Niro, and Michael Jordan - all left wing supporters.

Windows 10 market share fell in September

Gis Bun

Generally an Os drops if on the way out [older MacOS, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.x] but for a new OS to drop, something doesn't make sense.

No way you can have say 2 million people downgrade [before they can't] at the same time of all the new W10 purchases.

Fujitsu in talks to bail from PC market, Lenovo one of the suitors

Lenovo should fix their own systems before adding more problems.
