While US ban hit Huawei and inventory overload clipped Apple, Samsung quietly stole smartphone market share back in Q2

Gis Bun

Re: Xiaomi

Ummm. They are very far away from Samsung's sales.

Samsung has also many "ties".

home theater, SmartThings, etc.

Easier to stick with a compabny where you already have stuff from.

Samsung left off Google's new official Androids-for-biz list

Gis Bun

"Motorola, Huawei, BlackBerry and Nokia" aren't the best bunch of Android makers.

Huawei I think is banned [or will be] in the US soon.

Motorola doesn't have the clout it use to have.

Nokia is owned by Microsoft and they may just kill the phones.

BlackBerry is small potatoes.

Oh and Blackberry is still a Canadian company headquartered in Canada.

If you use the same reasoning then apple is a Chinese company.

Apple slapped hard with $440m patent bill in VirnetX FaceTime spat

Gis Bun

Ah. Wouldn't mind seeing Apple losing this one. They like to grab stuff when it suits their needs.

Aviation industry hits turbulence as Airbus buys into Bombardier’s new jetplanes

Gis Bun

What Twitler and company forgets while they got bamboozled by Boeing [who can't fight their legal battles on their own and have to cry like a child] is that without this deal, expect many layoffs in the US as Bombardier uses many plants and thousands of works to supply them.

Unsure why Boeing went after Bombardier as Boeing has nothing in the same "class". Meanwhile they have lost any future orders for military aircraft from the Canadian government and the UK government may do the same.

In addition, this 300% tariff will probably go to the international trade court where they are expected to lose. A small percentage and they had a chance. 300%? Nope.

Bombardier/Airbus will also say that Boeing themselves get government funding. Show me one aircraft manufacturer that does.

Airbus just gave Twitler's administration the finger.

Google isn't saying Microsoft security sucks but Chrome for Windows has its own antivirus

Gis Bun

Re: Why would Chrome have the privileges required?

I think the whole point is to install applications in Program Files to protect the rest of the computer. Installing an application in the user's profile is asking for trouble.

For some, UAC is just a reminder that something wants to install or update. ie Why is this box popping up if I didn't initiate it.

Gis Bun

So in a sense, within Chrome there will be 2 anti-virus software running. Expect a tiny bit of slow down.

Meanwhile, isn't it time that Chrome gets installing in Program Files instead of the user's profile folder? Within the folder, apps can access just about everything.

Microsoft downplays alarm over Windows Defender 'flaw'

"To be successful, an attacker would first need to convince...." Shouldn't be too hard for the average novice yesterday. Most of them get excited/nervous about anything they don't understand.

The UK isn't ditching Boeing defence kit any time soon

Gis Bun

You can probably kiss a good chunk of the 4000 jobs in Ireland gone.

What Twitler and company don't understand is that there are another 6000 jobs in the US that depend on the C Series.

Experts say Boeing has nothing as good as the C Series in it's class.

Finally, Boeing is reminding me of Twitler. If he can't get his way he makes changes to the rules [like dropping the senate approval to 50 votes from 60].

Other governments as well as airlines also object to this phoney tariff.

Gis Bun

Re: Canada-headquartered Bombardier

You think Boeing isn't getting subsidies from the US?

First manufacturer Twitler visited after his "win" was to Boeing.

Microsoft won't patch Edge browser content security bypass

Gis Bun

Like all vulnerabilities, I wonder how exploitable this vulnerability is.

Some vulnerabilities require you to be the biggest dumb @ss in the world as the only way a vulnerability could be exploited. If this one is one of those, who gives a crap.

No mention of IE. So IE was safe [for once]?

Apple actually opens up about something – the R&D behind Siri's voices

Gis Bun

Few remember that when Siri came out in whatever iPhone first, it was stuck in beta until the following iOS release.

The woman behind Siri's voice didn't even know it was modeled after her voice until later.

When you agreed [at least initially] to the terms - and everyone did, apple kept you voice requests and metadata for a year for "testing purposes' and then another 1.5 years without most of the metadata.

Kaspersky files antitrust suit against Microsoft

Gis Bun

Kaspersky are a bunch of whiners.

Have Symantec, Panda, McAfee or others complained?

If they are calling Defender inferior [it is], then you have nothing to whine about.

Yes. Defender is free but it's like most people - you don't like IE [or Edge], you download your favorite browser. Only difference is that Kaspersky has no free AV offering.

They also complained that Kaspersky was uninstalled on some computers when upgrading to Win 10. That is most likely because the users is running an older version of Kaspersky that isn't compatible with Win 10.

How many Kaspersky users know they can upgrade to the latest version as long as their subscription is valid. do they advertise that?

How about sending out notifications. Something like "Before you upgrade to Windows 10, make sure Kaspersky is up to date...." Did they do that?

Seems like Kaspersky wants to rake in the money but not do any work to rake it in.

Microsoft SCOM crashed some web apps, but the fix didn't fix it

Gis Bun

Too many "factions" at Microsoft. You have Skype vs Skype for Business vs Yammer vs Microsoft Teams.

You had previous issues with .net and Exchange that took a long while to fix - assuming it was finally fixed.

Remember. This is Drumpf's [a.k.a. 45*, a.k.a. Agent Orange] America. Lobbying, bribes, and the related don't exist in America now.

Drumpf wants big business to reek trillions in profit at the expense of the middle and lower class. Just look at his cabinet. Probably more billionaires and millionaires than any other cabinet ever.

Google starts enterprise support for Chrome, including top SaaS apps

Gis Bun

Re: Hmmm, got their work cut out

Funny that I prefer Windows Update Catalog when not using IE.

Gis Bun

Errrr. Would you want to deploy a web browser that has had more vulnerabilities than IE for [at least] the last 3 years in a row? See https://cve.mitre.org/

In addition, before deploying Chrome, you need to verify if internal web based apps work with it and if not, whether worth it to make it compatible.

Most companies won't give a crap whether it is popular. They do, however, need to figure out if they want to support another web browser.

Gis Bun

Re: Hmmm, got their work cut out

I don't think management cares if it is under 50% or even 5%. They care for what works with they got. If Chrome doesn't work with a company application, they won't allow it.

Same if they can't manage it well. After years Google finally got a brain and released enterprise tools.

It is not a popularity contents when it comes to companies.

Microsoft touts next Windows 10 Creators Update: It's set for a Fall

Gis Bun

Unless they changed their mind, MS already dubbed the fall update "v1709". But "v1703" was RTMed in march but only released in April.

Gis Bun

Re: Updated to it today....

No loss there. :-)

Gis Bun

Re: 1703, not for me

Did you get the request to upgrade or you did it on your own. If latter, not as much as MS's fault. They issued a warning not to upgrade until asked.

Did Sage's web site say v1703b is compatible?

Series of Seagate missteps as revenue generator spins down

Gis Bun

Not really related to Seagate's woes, but I won't touch their portable drives ever again. Bought one of them. Used it here and there. Shut off 99% of the time. Connected to a UPS [so power through USB wasn't needed].

Last fall, turned it on and got nothing. As if the disk didn't exist.

Went over to Best Buy. Said it wasn't the power adapter. Broke open the case and pulled out the hard disk and put it in a HD dock. It would turn on but nothing [so it wasn't the USB to drive interface]. Ran a HD diagnostics and it found thousands of errors.

Didn't take chances. Tossed the drive.

Lost hundreds of gigs of data that I accumulated over the years.

Don't install our buggy Windows 10 Creators Update, begs Microsoft

Gis Bun

They rushed it....

The Broadcom Bluetooth hardware could be on many laptops. Why did they release this to the public? Oh ya. They gave themselves a deadline.

Originally this was supposed to be "v1704".

Gis Bun

Re: Another day

So why do you use their software then? We see how much you like them if you use "M$" instead of "MS".

Creators Update gives Windows 10 a bit of an Edge, but some old annoyances remain

Gis Bun

Microsoft probably lost many IE supporters when w10 came out because they used Edge as the default browser and didn't even tell novices that IE still existed. Some then flipped over to Chrome [the web browser version of Macs] and probably won't head back.

When I mentioned to some that IE was there - just hidden in the menus - I'd get "whaaaaat?" But most of them will stick with their current browser.

That 'Trump lawyers threaten teen over kitten website' yarn is Fakey Fakey McFake Fakeface

CNN reported that the Trump organizations and affiliates have gone after anyone with the word Trump in the domain - good or bad. Hundreds are registered to them. Most are just registrations. Some redirect to the main Trump web site. Sorry. donaldtrumpsucks.com is taken.

President Trump-themed escort services may soon open in China

Gis Bun

Trump with escort services? Nah.

Oh ya. Where do you think his [current] wife came from?

According to various sites, she came over to the US in a non-work Visa permit and what did she do? Get a job at Trump's escort service in New York. Since it was illegal for her to work in the US, she was paid "under the table" [hmmmm] which means she and the escort service didn't pay taxes there.

One story claimed she amassed $20,000 in 3 months. She must of done a good job escorting! :-)

Of course she learned from her [current] husband and is taking a British tabloid [I believe] to court for calling her an escort.

She wants $150 million !!!

Damages to her and her career including future earnings related to endorsements. Endorsements? Seriously? She's the First Lady.

Samsung phones, Apple's iPhones are 'overpriced', says top Huawei exec

Gis Bun

Not really surprised an executive from a competing company would whine that the competitors are more expensive.

But at least Samsung phones will drop in price fast enough. With a promo, I paid nothing for my S7 a month after it came out [actually my provider owed me money].

Apple on the other hand doesn't drop prices much [excluding Xmas, etc.] and will only drop as a new model comes in.

That said, the iPhone 8 may hit $1000US.

Dying for Windows 10 Creators Update? But wait, there's more!

Gis Bun

Originally nicknamed v1703, it was later changed to v1704. So expect it to be available to the public in April although many won't get it until May.

The fall release is already nicknamed v1711. So likely a November release with upgrades mostly happening in December.

Don't want to be forced? Upgrade to the pro edition. Gives you options to delay.

Microsoft posts death notices for Windows 7 sysadmin certifications

Gis Bun

I certified with the Desktop Support Technician certificate. 2 simple exams based on Win XP. Gives me a MCP to keep. Never certified in anything else.

Familiar [but not an expert] for all server OSs up to Server 2012 R2.

My ex-boss said he'd take someone with experience but not certified over someone newly certified but no experience any day.

Gis Bun

$150/exam [or less] every year doesn't sound like much if need to recertify one exam.

The scammers are those learning centers that charge you $2500 for a 5 day course. Everything crammed in.

Update or shut up: Microsoft's choice for desktop Skypers

Re: Skype:

Other stuff mentioned must be you....

Gis Bun

Re: Any practical FOSS Skype-alternatives?

Except who uses Google Hangouts? I have 70+ contacts between home & work. Nobody suggested it.

Seems Google continues to be the "poor man" 's version of everything. Inferior version of Skype. Inferior version of Facebook.

Gis Bun

Re: Any practical FOSS Skype-alternatives?

Errrr. Microsoft forcing you to upgrade to Win 10 [from Win XP/7] because of Skype? Sure if you have an outdated Win XP. Nobody supports Win XP.

Latest Skype still works on Win 7.

You can use the web based Skype on any OS.

Gis Bun

Re: Skype as a free alternative to H323

Which was Office Communicator before that. Skype for Business updates still shows "Lync" in the file name and "Lync" for the executable.

'Hey, Homeland Security. Don't you dare demand Twitter, Facebook passwords at the border'

Gis Bun

They're already asking for passwords. Someone who was denied entry going from Canada to the US was forced to give up passwords.

Border officials are claiming something like "entering the US is a privilege" as an excuse.
