UK.gov's web filtering mission creep: Now it plans to block 'extremist' websites

Haku

Re: Nanny state.

"I wonder how long it is before this site is added to the censor list?"

If they're censoring sites with swearwords then El Reg will be on the list from the very start, as will a multitude of sites, especially ones with comment systems that don't have strict filtering in place, and such a swearword filter setting will include major ones such as YouTube, Amazon and eBay (try searching for 'fucking').

It's going to get very silly once the filters are implimented.

Nanny state.

Somehow 'they' know what's best for us, yet 'they' mostly live in completely different ways to the people they govern.

How far will they go with this liberty stripping?

Will you please stop changing the damn headline!!

I look at the front page and think there's a new article, but no it's just a new headline. So far it's been:

"Got your new PS4? Enjoy those BLUE SCREAMS of DEATH, warn gamers"

"PlayStation 4: Blinking BLUE LIGHT OF DEATH frags some gamers"

"Sony's new PlayStation 4: So AMAZING except for ONE little thing..."

.

I'm going to start taking bets on wether the article gets a new headline before Monday.

Not only the hoohah over the spying issues, using the cloud when you could have your own in-house datacenter means your business is reliant on two different 3rd party services, the cloud and your internet provider. It might save the business a bit of money if things go smoothly, but if they don't then you could be galloping up diarrhea drive without a saddle.

Netflix, YouTube video killed the BitTorrent star? Duo gobble web traffic

Haku

Re: copyright clowns

"There must, quite obviously, be some mysterious, secret network protocol that only the pirates know about and use, and nobody else can detect"

There is, and it's been around for decades, Sneakernet aka portable storage devices. In the early days it was cassete tapes & floppy discs, now it's harddrives & flash drives.

Sneakernet latency has always been a problem, but the bandwidth is now ludicrus :)

Haku

Since my previous posting the headine has changed from:

"Bittorrent gets the boot as Netflix and YouTube win the web"

to

"Netflix, YouTube video killed the BitTorrent star? Duo gobble web traffic"

which while technically correct considering Netflix & YouTube use port 80 it omits the small detail that BitTorrent can use any port but its default is 6881-6889.

Haku

Misleading headline, surely it should've read:

"BITTORRENT LOSES ITS BANDWIDTH CROWN TO NETFLIX AND YOUTUBE"

Oh and if torrent traffic goes down to 1% of all internet bandwidth I bet the copyright clowns will still complain bitterly they're losing billions to piracy and have to enforce even more draconian measures on people's internet connections...

Increasing difficulty of mining Bitcoin

With mining Bitcoins getting progressively more time consuming as the difficulty of finding them is logarithmic

see this difficulty chart: https://blockchain.info/charts/difficulty

it means there will (soon?) be a tipping point where it costs more money in electricity to mine them on a mass scale than it returns in Bitcoin value. That's when things could get interesting, with more people dropping out due to the unprofitability, will the big players dominate the market and achieve 33%?

Self destructing harddrives?

I recall a company called EDT were going to release a harddrive which could be destroyed by releasing its reservoir of acid onto the platters, but it's been removed from their website (hence the archive.org link) so its availability/existance can only be guessed at.

Haku

Re: Well, this is all very clever and all that, but what about bringing back...

I was clearing out my old computer equipment earlier this year and found my 6gb Bigfoot, I'd forgotten just how massive & heavy the thing was!

It's rather amazing how quickly harddrive technology has developed, I got 4 WD Green drives for a NAS and doing initial tests on them (filling up drive and reading it all back to check data integrity & read/write speed) I had them just sitting flat on the desk, they barely got warm and were as quiet as a mouse, and all 4 drives running in the NAS make less noise/heat than a few year old 500gb drive I have.

Re: @codejunky

I think I hit a nerve.

The endless drivers vs cyclists arguments mostly revolve around the fact that too many drivers feel that they own the road (cue the ignorant 'road tax' arguments) and anyone using it with a smaller vehicle shouldn't be there, especially if they're in front of them (a lot of drivers think roads are racetracks), and whilst saying that removing cyclists from the equation will reduce deaths on the road is a fact it only highlights the need for drivers to accept that the road is for everyone legally allowed to be there, wether they pay vechicle tax or not.

£9,999 mobile phone battery

I've often seen absurd prices for widely available items on eBay. When you look at the revision history and/or sales you'll see that the seller purposely put the price stupidly high, I believe this is because the seller temporarily ran out of immediate stock and didn't want to abandon the listing so priced it too high for anyone with any sense to buy it. Then when new stock arrives they set the price back to normal, a process that's significantly easier cancelling & relisting the item.

But that doesn't explain why the £9,999 battery started out at that price...

Sadly the advent of the remote control has heralded in a new era of tvs that are almost impossible to operate beyond the on/off button. Heck, even with the remote control on some tvs it can be like a Krypton Factor puzzle to change the video source.
