NASA chief: Earth is DOOMED if we spot a big asteroid at short notice

Re: Why one country ?

"At a push the ESA could step in, but that seems a long shot to me."

And that, to me, is the remarkable thing in all of this. We expect the US, Russia, China and India to invest more in a space program that's tailor made for good old rich conservatory Europe. We have the money, and we have the expertise. Why are we expecting third parties to lead the way in this regard?

Re: "the writing is on the wall for desktop computing."

"Presumably you're ignoring anything game development related as well, such as compiling, or 3D modelling or ray-tracing/rendering..."

CPU-intensive development applications never meant volume sales on the desktop -- or anywhere, for that matter (just look at Silicon Graphics). The bulk of desktop/laptop sales are related to office and generic domestic use, where web browsing, e-mail and office productivity apps are probably more than 90% of the software running per unit of time. And for those types of apps, 5-10 year-old hardware is still adequate.

UK Parliament website hack exposes shoddy passwords

Mosaic doesn't work well with thumbnails

Brains work in strange ways. Looking at the mosaiced image in full res doesn't produce any hints as to what the passwords might be. But looking at the thumbnail as shown in the article, one can easily tell the arachnid superhero's name, and it's also very easy to guess which of the other accounts have the same password as the account name. Of course, it's too late to do anything about this now -- I'm certainly not the first to notice that...

Nigerian duped gullible NASA employee

Agree with Michael

Indeed, the article (mis-)reads "The success this international team had in identifying the culprit is impressive. But it's important to note that this breach never would have happened without the cooperation of one very gullible (and likely delinquent) NASA employee."

No, actually, it's important to note that this SUCCESS would never have happened without a NASA employee involved. Come on.
