I stopped watching broadcast TV a few years ago. When a new show that I want to watch is aired I'll just download it via torrent and watch it at my own leisure. That way there are no advert breaks and I can pause and rewind at will.

In fact, the only time the television is actually showing something broadcast is when my 2 year old wants to watch CBeebies (which is probably the best BBC channel there is anyway!)

Ok, I am a big Trekkie, I have ALL of the DVDs and even had a uniform when a was younger. Been to the Star Trek Experience (RIP) in Vegas twice (I'm from the UK). I think you get the picture.

But I am looking forward to this film and hope it does not try to mirror the Star Treks before it. Enterprise was quite good, but as someone said earlier it sometimes fell over when it tried to fit into the jigsaw of holes that the other series' has made.

I really wouldn't mind a complete re-boot of Star Trek, using the same concepts but not stuck too ridged to the other story lines. And you do have to use your imagination... the design and effects used in the 1960s came from the 1960s, they look really out of date today "Toggle switches on Enterprise contol panels... what happened to touch screen". Thats why the technology seems to run in reverse!

I also understand that JJ Abrams is trying to recruit (forgive the phrase) the next generation of Star Trek fans. So this film has to apeal to a greater audience. Enterprise was cancelled because it wasn't very popular even amongst Trekkies. Hopefully JJ will generate enough interest in Star Trek as a whole and keep Star Trek going for another 50 years.

Who knows whether the next series will be based on the original crew (like this film) or will be set after Voyager. But it will be a lot of fun when it comes!

I have seen some of the New Voyages stuff and I must admit I was surprised how good it was coming from fans with too much time on their hands. Of Gods and Men was brilliant. Although the guy who plays Kirk in New Voyages is really annoying. Get rid of him (and the corny lines that they recycle from the TOS) then it will be worthy is Star Trek cannon imho.

I also wouldn't mind seeing a darker side to Star Trek. A horror film perhaps set in the Trek universe but will a real scary story and a few deaths (a-la Event Horizon). They have never really done that on Trek (although First Contact could be scary).

Everyone knows that banning Conkers in Schools is just another plot the UK government has put in place to save the environment. In 100 years time we will be overrun by Conker trees, they will be every where!

Tech woes threaten NASA's Moon plan

how about NASA build the ship in earth orbit, then they can fly to the moon, beam down, do what they gotta, then shoot on over to Mars, park her in standard orbit, beam down, fight some martians or klingons or whatever, beam back up, warp out of orbit then boldly go where no man has gone before.

How can it be so difficult to return to the moon? I mean it was accomplished in the late 60s, and not technology has progressed it should be easier/safer. Has NASA just forgotten the expertise it gained in that period?

I understand that they are developing en entirely new spacecraft and launch system, but surely it will be based on the Saturn V and just improved.

Actually, not ALL shows use the 555 number method.

24 producers actually put a real phone number in their show on several occasions. If you dialed the number you got to speak to someone who worked on the show (writers/directors etc).

I believe other shows/films have done similar things too.

The fact that one of the guys who worked on the Simpsons episode actually registered the email address and responded to it shows that they had a similar idea in mind.

We used to have an Amstrad VCR bought brand new back in 1991. It never worked properly from day one... I was the only person who was able to get a video tape to play on the bloody thing.

I don't know what it was exactly, it was just knowing to push the right buttons at the EXACT right time (you had to listen to the sounds the VCR was making). I tried teaching other people but they ended up with bad tracking problems (if they got the tape to play at all!)

Anyway, the thing finally went band a few years ago, by that time DVDs had already hit mainstream.

Incidentaly, the Betamax VCR that was bought before I was born (I'm 23) is still working perfectly!

WTF is that going to do? Virgin are just looking at the amount you are downloading, not what your actually downloading, so encryping it will not make a blind bit of difference.

Besides, Encrypted Torrent traffic still looks like torrent traffic.

We are not asking to see the games for free, we are complaining that sky charge an arm and a leg to show the games in the UK but sharge very little to show the games in other counties.

Most people in the UK are clueless about HD anyway.

They think that just because they have a Playstation 3/Blu-Ray player then the image they see on screen is HD... even if they are watching it on an old 14" portable CRT via scart!

At the end of the day, unless you've got a ridiculously oversized TV then you don't need HD anyway!

To cut a long story short, this wording in those letters may have been simplified, but many british internet users don't know the difference between illigal file sharing and general browsing of the net!
