Intel loses its Lustre – Chipzilla bins own-brand HPC file system

Hyperscale slowdown

Intel realized the number of humans creating data center/cloud content is finite. Only so many first world teenagers taking selfies and posting to social media. IoT was partially promoted to bring about non-human data generators to keep the cloud bloated with useless data and drive hyperscale build up, build out and refresh. IoT has failed to gain the adoption hoped for and self driving cars are farther over the horizon that had been hoped. Hyperscale is going to fizzle out for a while. We might have one or two architecture generations with limited adoption as refresh isn't necessary plus ARM and AMD will get more market share. Intel is battoning down the hatches and preparing for rough seas.

Looming slowdown of hyperscale?

Intel realized that there was a limited amount of humans creating data to drive scale up/out and refresh of the cloud data centers. IoT served, partially, to create more data to drive hyperscale (Intel's cash cow).

IoT isn't hitting needed adoption levels and a saturation of hyperscale data centers is looming. Less scale-out, less refresh.

Time to cut costs.

heaping pile of Bolshevik BS

It's bullsh*t. Drive manufacturers would never go for it and the govt would need permission. They'd never risk their brand reputation on it. This is Russian fear mongering as part of the current East/West EU/NATO/Ukraine/sanctions thing. It's a way they can negatively impact a western business. Nice try Vladi (Huilo)

SGI biz still kinda lumpy

No matter how hard they blow...

No matter how hard they blow, they can't turn a dog turd into a balloon.

SGI spiraled down the porcelain throne. Rackable was bleeding red and heading for the great whirlpool as well. Joining the two isn't going to cure the flu they each have. It is just going to require a plunger and some elbow grease when they finally reach the bottom of the bowl.

SGI had their own processor technology (Mips), and was a pioneer in 64-bit computing. In their heyday they were amazing, a real technology pioneer and serious computing and visualization player. Once they ditched their own processor architecture for Intel's they became nothing more than a technicolor Supermicro. As for Rackable, their major feat was shorty 2U chassis in a rack and using DC power. Compared to SGI's once having a processor architecture, Rackable is a helmet wearing short bus commando with a drool bucket.

Both of them seem to excel at blowing cash like an undersexed, alcoholic trust fund kid in Vegas.

Dell thinks small with 2.5-inch SAS storage sidecar

Echo 5

Author needs to read specs more closely..

If you look at the tech specs on the Dell website you will see that it is a 2U high enclosure that holds 24 2.5-inch drives.

The Reg article states it as a 1U enclosure holding 24 2.5-inch drives.

That makes it unimpressive as several manufacturers and even bare chassis makers have a 2U/24 drive 2.5-inch solution.

oops..

I have been so content with Ritalin all this time. Luckily the downloadable pdf report had a break down of new things to try on page 143. =)

Intel CEO confronts OEM grumbling around direct chip sales

Its the economy...

This is a very obvious sign of the global economy sliding into heavy contraction due to the American credit crisis and subprime mortgage debacle.

Big monsters like Dell, HP and IBM need constant feeding of revenue. Now that the big enterprise business they are accustomed to surviving on is contracting they are looking for other pastures to feed on.

They are whining about Intel's direct business. They are dropping prices to take smaller tier two opportunities from the smaller OEMs like Rackable, Verari, Western Scientific, Aspen, etc.

The big monsters have a huge appetite and they need to eat. MUST HAVE FOOD OR MONGO GET ANGRY! GO ON RAMPAGE! ARRRRRRGH!
