Google Squared - the Cuilest search app ever

Love it!

An entertaining read, for sure! I don't care what browser he uses, or whether he uses Maps or not, the fact of the matter is simple: the results he got from simple search queries were terrible. That's all this article is about: terrible results. What gives terrible results? A terrible search engine.

I reckon Ted hit the nail on the head, and his intentionally amateurish ways of tearing into it are hilarious (I love the use of MS Paint for showing things, I absolutely love it -- Real Men use MS Paint!)

As for the baited amongst you, I find it amusing you feel it necessary to investigate Ted's own website in the name of getting some material on the guy. Why not take the article for what it is at face value: sledging an atrocity of the Internet from a company that should know better.

@Disgusting

Would that also be the same religion responsible for enslave Muslims, pagans and other unbelievers... or responsible for inquisitions and the murder of many innocents?

Maybe I'm getting my religious history mixed up here, but I was under the impression that both religions have a vicious, blood-stained past.

@Ciaran I know about the labels, but...

Try clicking the "Archive" button.

There's two things I use labels for:

- using rules to automatically put emails into "folders" represented by labels. In this case, you want to apply a label to the email and then ARCHIVE IT. This will remove it from the Inbox.

- I read an email in the Inbox and decide I'd like to "file it away" somewhere - just like with folders. Apply a label, and if you don't want it in the Inbox anymore then Archive it.

So as for your complaint "The label system IMO encourages you to leave your inbox littered with crap", if you use the Archive button, or use rules with the Archive option ticked, you'll find this issue resolved.

Cheers

Crikey

I've never seen such a hilarious display!

Quite simply, Matt is coherently forming an argument which appears to contain facts. I wouldn't ever ask him to reference these facts because it's a damn comments thread.

Everyone else that disagrees with Matt appear to be completely incapable of forming anything but what I'm now quite convinced is a misguided opinion.

As for my opinion? Good for you guys, Israel. It's quite a technological achievement and I hope it saves many of your soldiers' (and ultimately civilians') lives. Shame on any clownshoes that opts to get in the way of your noble pursuits of happiness.

Pretty sure I just saw that in the list of Labs options. Do a search in Labs for "Forgotten Attachment Detector".

@Frank

I don't think that's Ted's point. The model for giving away something cheap to encourage a user to pay a monthly premium (which is pretty much higher than it should be in order to balance the cost of the free item) is pretty common. Most of Ted's argument was against the whole cloud computing thing and giving away a free netbook to encourage you to use cloud computing for your apps was a pretty pointless exercise since the users that would be interested in a free low-grade netbook probably wouldn't be interested in apps such as Google's.

The election campaign

It may have been part of Labor's election campaign, but it wasn't one of the big things they were touting. Another correction as well, Conroy specifically stated that the new filter will be opt-out. Those that were aware of the filter at the time didn't like the idea of it but at least conceded and reasoned that if it's going to be opt-out, it's not all that bad.

After Labor was elected Conroy changed his mind to make it mandatory (a two tier system where "adult content" is opt-out and "illegal stuff and other things we don't like" is mandatory) and everyone in Australia that gives a damn tripped over and put forth exclamations of WTF MATE? The bastard pulled a swifty on us.

"While publishing an article on the general pussification you then withdraw a couple of gags about mong kids. The Reg has turned pussy!"

Amen to that. Thankfully, the commentards quoted the original text and I still managed to appreciate the jokes.

Good work, Ted.

Re: Scientology is a religion. www.scientology.org

Scientology also stalk, frame and ruin the lives of those that publicly speak out against it - and don't wear a mask. Criminals don't hide their faces behind masks. People that don't want to have their lives ruined by criminal organisations (read: Scientology) hide their faces behind masks.

Criminals also show their faces when committing crimes (I drive over the speed limit while not wearing a mask... oh noes!), does this also mean that people that don't wear masks are criminals? Using this logic, Scientologists are criminals.

Thanks for the comment tamphex, it's good to know.
