Says who???

The same government that was involved in a sloppily thrown together raid on Dotcom for the benefit to the MAFIAA?? (By the MAFIAA, I mean the stooges that represent the film and recording industriesrackets in the USA.) The same government that, since 9/11 has attempted to curtail civil liberties by the use of unconstitutional act, like the PATRIOT act in an attempt to suppress its citizens???

His "partner in crime", may be a traitor, but, since he (Assange) is not a US citizen; he can not be a traitor.

Here, understand the definition of traitor, and treason:

I will say this, if I were ever stupid enough to enter into one of these agreements; I would expect that once I fulfilled the contract; what ever O/S was on the machine, would get nuked from orbit; and that the RTO company would have NO SAY about it. After all, it is supposed to be my machine at that point.

New vicious UEFI bootkit vuln found for Windows 8

Pint

Re: Um, no, actually...everybody has to go cap in hand to MS.

Buy this man a case of beer!!!!

Why, you may ask?

He understands the problem, and the nefarious schemes M$ has "up its sleeve"

Allow me to highlight the relevant portions of his comment:

As I understand it the problem is basically MS hijacking the territory re secure boot, and demanding that OEMs implement UEFI by default, without any obligation to give other OS providers an automatic right to be able to have their own keys for authentication by the UEFI system, i.e. everybody has to go cap in hand to MS.

Fatman

Re: Obviously this is on purpose

It is Microsoft's way of "enhancing its partners offerings"; by making sure that competing O/Ses are locked out, and that it will be difficult to install alternatives, or to upgrade the installed O/S.

It all boils down to this:

do we trust the OEMs to make it convenient for end users to

a) install their own keys for either alternative O/S installs (assuming the end user wants a "Secure Boot" experience), or

b) to allow to the end user to install keys for upgrades to the existing O/S

The reason why I mentioned "b)" is that without that capability, your desktop becomes essentially a "brick", and in order to upgrade the O/S, you may have to buy new hardware, and we all know that makes M$' hardware partners very happy. They must look at the cell phone market with envy - just look at all of those ilemmings who go out and splurge hard earned cash on the newest Jesus phone. Those greedy bastards (OEMs) want their share too!!

Re: Ouch!...Currently IE seems to be the target of choice

What do you expect?

Since Microsoft software dominates the world desktop PC usage, it is only to be expected to be the dominant target.

Now, for my personal view WRT using Microsoft software, I liken that to doing welding and grinding in an old, dried out wood frame building. It only takes one spark, or a bit of carelessness to send it up in flames. Linux, OTOH, is like doing thew same in a concrete block building.

Re: ...you can get 5 consecutive addresses

Most likely because you were allocated from a designated '/29' address space.

A few years ago, i needed some static IP addresses for my then employer, and I was issued a block of 5 consecutive addresses, and realized what the ISP had done. If you recall, the "all bits zero" being the network address, and the "all bits one" being the broadcast address; a '/29' leaves you with 6 usable IP addresses. In my case, the ISP had set the first usable one as the "gateway" address; thus giving me the 5 consecutive addresses.

Previously, we had only ONE static IP address, and it "ate" up a '/30' block, in the same manner.

Re: Last two paragraphs

ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON!!!!!!!

For the most part, enterprises don't give a shit about eye candy, they want stability, an easily understood UI, and the ability to move from one version to another without having to retrain the staff.

WindblowZE 8 is an example of what enterprises detest - a new UI for the sake of a new UI.

To be fair, one can toss that grenade (`a new UI for the sake of a new UI`) at Canonical for its adoption of Unity (which is, IMHO, a royal clusterfuck on a standard desktop.

Getting rid of Unity is the first thing I did after installing the beta of Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10 for testing purposes on my dev machine. I can't stand that fucking thing (Unity). I have had some of its capabilities by the use of a left side panel with launchers since 7.10.

Canonical, may I suggest that you leave Unity to everything but desktops, where, again IMHO, it is a fucking hindrance.

FCC to TV broadcasters: Ready, set ... give your spectrum up

Fatman

Re: Secondly, what would they actually "give up"?

I can't speak for what you in the UK had to "give up", but, for the most part, high power analog stations no longer exist. There are some analog stations broadcasting, mostly "community" stations and others that re-broadcast high power stations on a different channel to extend that stations range, or to fill in problem areas (like behind a hill).

The issue is simply this, in the crowded metro areas, where the competition for radio spectrum is the greatest, the least amount of spectrum is available (due, in part to too many TV stations). And, the only way to get more spectrum is to get somebody to move or completely vacate a channel. Then it becomes a case of what's in it for me??

No same broadcaster is going to voluntarily give up a channel, which they currently have all to themselves to put their signal at the mercy of a competitor. It boils down to guaranteeing carriage of your signal; either by your own facilities, or by some arrangement, potentially with a competitor. What will have to worked out is how to protect a broadcaster who relinquishes their frequency from being fucked up the ass by some other station, now that the other station has the first one by the balls. Broadcasting is a highly competitive environment, and you can be sure if your competitor can fuck you up the ass, they will do it if they can get away with it.

Now, having said all that, if there can be some arrangement where stations multiplex on a single channel that is either owned by a non broadcast third party; or through some kind of joint venture where all of the stations being multiplexed are co-equals; then it may work. Otherwise, the scramble for advertiser dollars makes broadcasting a nasty business.

Then again, the FCC could entertain an idea of shutting down all stations in a given metro area, and force the cell phone companies to pay the local cable outfits the cost for supplying basic (formerly "over the air") signals to each household in the metro area. Ya, right, when pigs fly!!!!

Fatman

"Give Up" your spectrum, yah, right!!!!

It would take some serious incentivizing to get the TV broadcasters to"give up" spectrum.

Secondly, what would they actually "give up"?

US TV channels are 6Mhz wide, and are found in these frequency ranges

the low VHF spectrum at

54-72 MHz (TV channels 2-4), 112/714*

76-88 MHz (TV channels 5 and 6), 92/501*

the high VHF spectrum at

174-216 MHz (TV channels 7-13), 779/2872*

and the UHF bands at

470-608 MHz (TV channels 14-36) 1899/9010*

614-698 MHz (TV channels 38-51) 1098/5515*

BTW, there "is" a channel 37, except it is reserved for radio astronomy (IIRC).

*Note:

1) Both totals include allocations for border area Canadian and Mexican stations.

2) The first value is full power DTV licenses ONLY (service "DT")

3) The second value includes both digital and analog, full power, translator and low power stations ("all" services).

No, your are not alone. I do work on a desktop, not a fucking fondleslab.

Ever since that clustefuck (Unity) arrived, I have ripped it out of each one of my Ubuntu installs.

For support reasons, I have a machine that individual installs of 9.10, 10.04, 10.10, 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 and a test bed of 12.10.

In each one of them, where Unity was installed, I ripped it out. First thing after the install was:

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

and goodbye to Unity.
