Jailed terror student 'hid' files in the wrong Windows folder

adnim

perhaps...

the man was scared of our draconian anti-terrorist laws, and hid the files from casual view for fear of being busted, rather than actually aiding and abetting terrorists. As is the usual case, the public are given only the information that marks this man as guilty. maybe he is, perhaps he isn't.

I do not store any files in the "my documents" folder and I have a lot of files that would be very useful to those improvising explosives or plotting the overthrow of a government. It is purely out of curiosity that I have them. I am a pacifist I could not kill or even physically hurt another creature, although humans are lower on the list than most species of animal. Still if the authorities wanted they could construct a case around the files on my system and bust my ass.

Freedom in this country is now just an illusion.

Thank you commentors

Thank you for making me feel good and positive about values that I thought were smothered and all but erased by market forces.

Ballmer: Google is winning online

adnim

Ballmer says

"We have a lot of work to do in search and advertising"

They also have a lot of work to do on making their OS work properly, that should have priority over annoying users with adverts.

"Our advertising system works..."

Not on my PC it won't.

"when we have something there, we'll show you."

How about showing us a stable, fast and reliable OS?

Yahoo! Teams! With! eBay! And! PayPal! To! End! Phishing!

Just stop it

All on-line shopping and banking. In fact stop any and all e-commerce. simple. I couldn't give a fig if this happened within the next 5 minutes, even though it means I would have to find another job.

Seriously, revise the email standards and allow only plain text. Any and every email containing html should get deleted at the very first relay the email hits.

Although this would help, there is always the issue of attachments to contend with. I wonder how users, without thought, just open and run attachments regardless of source.

Which "joe sixpack" or Radio One listener could resist an attachment such as: (Current Female/Male Flavour of the month) gets her tits/his cock out.exe. I know I can't. I've even removed my anti virus software because it stopped me running them for some reason.

Lawmaker shows nudie pic to high school seniors

adnim

why?

Presuming the image was of a topless female ADULT, were were the police involved?

Is it actually illegal in Ohio to view images of breasts? Is is illegal to show images of breasts to 17 year olds within the state boundaries of Ohio?

If so why has this legislator not been arrested?

Illegal or not, what a waste of police time, I expect there are real crimes being committed in Ohio with proper victims who would be grateful for the attention of these otherwise useful public servants.

Microsoft-loving (former) security czar calls for closed internet

adnim

A matter of time

That's all.... ISP's will do whatever the law tells them.

If anyone reading this has internet access without going through some kind of provider, I would be interested.

Remember, at least in the UK most of the recently passed laws, I would not be surprised if this is true for the US and some of Europe either, have had the sole purpose of monitoring and restricting the behaviour of the populace.

Power, control, the maintenance of the status quo and keeping the sheep scared are all that is of importance to the powers that be. The internet offers a nearly free and potentially unrestricted flow of information, and some of that information is true. And that scares governments just as much as dictatorships. For further thought, what is a free market democracy if it is not something dictated by market forces? And what of those whom control those forces?

See this speech as primer. The idea is out there now, floating in the air. Though ridiculed by many, at the same time some will be rubbing their hands together getting high on the thought of all that control. Getting hard over the thought of all the dollars to be made.

I feel sad for the future of our grand children's children for I fear they will not realise the freedom or choice I once had.

Hackers hit back at iPhone update

adnim

I find all this amusing

Not being a consumer, not feeling the need to own the latest gadget. And not having the kind of personality that seeks succour in bragging rights. I actually find all this hilarious.

Anyone who bought this over hyped over priced consumer trap get all they deserve. Sorry, but I cannot help laughing, neither can Apple I would imagine.

Mobile video is pointless, for mobile music I have a 6 year old Sony minidisc walkman(awesome). My phone, a 4 year old Nokia does all sorts of things I don't want or need, fortunately it was free else wise I still would not have a mobile phone. FFS I get more cold sales calls and text adverts on it than I do legitimate calls.(slight exaggeration)

Are Apple/Mac owners sheep? Some perhaps. But one who does conform, consume and obey truly is a sheep.

Buying an iphone to me, seems pretty sheepish. Here's wishing you all get satisfaction out of them, even if the only satisfaction you get is whipping it out at a board meeting or in the pub.

Science and religion collide for galactic conference

adnim

Logic and common sense

are required to qualify and quantify scientific discoveries. Religious types and those believing in a god are basically adrift of reality, twisting the laws of physics and the theory of evolution to fit their faith whilst living in a permanent state of denial. They are inherently unqualified to recognise the truth. And as such should not be trusted to perform the most rudimentary scientific experiment.

Religious people blinkered to science? Maybe not. Blinkered to reality, fact and truth? most certainly.

Microsoft: New Live Search 'as good as Google'

adnim

@Morely Dotes

I whole heartedly agree, Although my trust of Google is certainly waning.

@ any one that cares

Support the little guy, make him rich, rich enough to enjoy life but not so rich as he can exert any kind of control over the consumer, market or government. Then, make use of another up and coming provider until they too start getting, "too big for their boots" to coin a phrase. Let us as consumers create a more level playing field by using the choice we have, whilst we still have it.

OK, the product in some cases maybe slightly inferior, but at least one is treated with some respect, as an asset to the provider and not a locked in source of ridiculous amounts of cash and/or saleable and often personal information.

I would rather make a poor man rich than a rich man richer.

m$,

Regardless of the quality of their search results they should never be used. What chance is there of the IT world freeing itself from m$ clutches, if users continue to use m$ services?

m$ will never crash and burn if we keep on encouraging and using them.

Microsoft shouts 'Long Live XP'

adnim

between the lines

"Nash also said, “We’re also seeing more retail customers purchasing their new Windows operating system when they get a new PC than we ever have before, rather than purchasing it standalone.”"

From this I read... No one is purchasing vi$ta off the shelf. vi$ta is being foisted on users who buy a new system because they have little choice unless they request XP. All new PC sales will be regarded by m$ as a vi$ta sale even if the user chooses to upgrade to XP. Yes I said upgrade from vi$ta to XP. In my opinion the worse thing one can do to a fast and efficient PC is to cripple it by installing vi$ta.

For all Joe Sixpacks and Radio One listeners everywhere, before you accept vi$ta think on this: All that glistens is not gold. And you can't polish a turd, even though m$ managed to put a party frock on one and call it vi$ta.

Google says go-go-Gadget Ads

adnim

@anonymous

I accept that ads are part of society, just as I accept war, lies, profiteering, child abuse, murder, rape and ignorance are also woven into the fabric of society. It doesn't mean I have to bend over and take it.

When are you going to stand up? I guess your anonymity answers that question.

The only advertising I advocate is Yellow Pages.

And no, the company I work for does not use pervasive advertising. In fact we do not advertise at all. Other than listing product/service on our website. Despite this we are doing quite well. So it would appear you are wrong in more ways than one. And how my company advertises its product/service relates to how I spell my nym escapes me, perhaps you would care to elucidate?

btw my post was not a whinge, it was a rant. I don't whinge I act.

adnim

Adblock everything

I don't see ads more than once. All advertising is intrusive and offensive. When I need a product I usually know what it is that I need and will actively go looking for it. I do not want ads for shit I do not want forced upon me. If there is no plugin developed to block this then I will either code one myself or just add all google domains to my black list at the firewall. Fuck them! greedy money grabbing bastards. They earn enough cash without turning a search request into, well "analogies fail me" also.

Maddy: TV torture for the ADD generation

adnim

Empty life without anothers tragedy?

What a sad bunch these types are.

The only control I need over media intrusion into my life is the ability to turn it off.

As for reality TV, it is not reality TV when the participants are aware of the cameras. If the participants are not aware of the cameras it is then intrusion, and an invasion of privacy.

The media, especially the tabloid press are vultures (no offence intended Reg). Anything that sells copy or ensnares another mindless viewer/reader is good to go.

I agree with Sir Runcible regarding watching TV excessively making one sterile. That would do wonders for the gene pool. I would go further however, in wishing that watching 5 minutes of reality TV or a soap opera also made one sterile.

Boffins challenge shape of neutron neutrality

adnim

@Keller

Protons consist of two up and one down quark:uud 2x(+2/3)+(-1/3) which gives a net charge of +1. The exchange of gluons between these quarks is what is responsible for the strong force. The strong force acts over very small distances around the diameter of an atomic nucleus. Contrary to common sense the strong force increases with distance.

No quark or gluon has ever been detected by itself. Although current theory suggests that gluons can exist without quarks in what is know as a glueball, although this has yet to be observed. Recently a quark-gluon plasma was observed at the RHIC(relativistic heavy ion collider) at Brookhaven National Labs.

adnim

@Adam

You beat me too it. :) Quarks are -1/3 charge particles:down, strange and bottom and +2/3 charge particles:up, charm and top. The neutron consists of ddu = 2x(-1/3) + (+2/3) = a net charge of zero. As you rightly said the gluon, a gauge boson is responsible for the strong force. The deeper one looks the more colourful this theoretical world becomes.

It is a fascinating subject even though the understanding of the maths behind QCD field equations is way beyond the capabilities of my poor skull :)

Chinese bloke games himself to death

adnim

Manic Miner

Well in the early 80's myself and a group of friends would think nothing of 3 even 4 day gaming marathons without sleep. We would eat and drink and smoke, whilst wearing out the rubber keys on our speccys. One by one we would either fall asleep or disappear to our beds. 48 hour gaming sessions were very common place. This went on for years with the Atari and the Amiga being successive platforms. Now at my age I don't think I am physically capable of playing games for more than 24 hours non stop. To be honest I don't even try any more. I still have the occasional 16 hour session though.

Root-locked Linux for the masses

adnim

Unfortunately,

there will always be a "joe sixpack" or a Radio One listener who wishes to operate a computer. So I guess users do need protecting from themselves. And I believe it is much better that the Open Source community look after an idiots PC than micro$oft.

We cannot make these people smarter though, it's down to the content of the gene pool. Perhaps if some of the warnings on household products, zebra/pelican crossings and the words on the wing mirrors of American cars were removed, the dumb would then become less of a problem.

I just wonder how support would feel about guys like me who are possibly more confident than able when it comes to tinkering "under the bonnet". It would not be welded shut for long. The developers would also have to work closely with industry, support for the latest hardware is thin on the ground, this would exclude the enthusiast market. Debian is the only distro I can get to work on my i915 based laptop, I had to do a minor hack on the install to make that boot. And who knows what ugly beasts may arise from the collusion of an open source community with a capitalist, closed source industry? It would be nice to think that principles would hold over cash.

A 5W PC is very nice(Earth friendly)... but could it compete with a Core2Duo @3.2Ghz and 2x ATI X1900XT in crossfire? I do like to escape into gaming, the only real reason I still run XP. That and Cuebase.

Any success of this project is really down to trust, and application interfaces not being wildly different to m$ applications. The latter is non too difficult to address, but gaining trust is going to be much more difficult. Power does corrupt and judging by the way things are with the world, it is in man's nature to be corrupted by power.... Wake up, open eyes, look around. Having said that, the number of people who will happily supply social networking sites with personal information indicates that this trust is far too easily won.

It only takes a greedy bastard or two to fugg this kind of thing up.

Top judge: put everyone in UK on the DNA database

adnim

Although

I can be eloquent, all I have to say to this Judge is a very loud and resounding FUCKOFF. My mind is my own, as is my DNA you twat.

What gives the state the right to have my DNA? Other than rights that the state itself has given to itself... So much for democracy. Welcome to the police state.

Each and every day that passes I feel more like property of this government than an individual member of society. And as far as I am concerned they do not have the right to store my DNA, to stop me drinking in the street, to make me politically correct, to control my life etc. But that is what it is all about... control. And the government are rapidly loosing it as the rich get richer at the expense of the less fortunate. Do they really think a DNA database is going to solve the ills of our society? So very short sighted, a more equal distribution of wealth and some real understanding of what makes our youth disaffected would help a great deal more than trying to cope with the symptoms of a capitalist lead pigopolist, mis-governed society dominated by greedy grabbing bastards.

It's all in the title.

Knowing how m$ behave, what's surprising to me is the length of time Autopatcher was allowed to operate without m$ sticking the boot in.

Surely several thousand other computer users are now going to switch to a Linux variant or OSX.

Linux leaps from strength to strength especially in the area of install and usability for the non-IT literate. Plus the various user friendly GUI's available, and all those distro's. Finding one that suits is worth the investment in time and effort these days. As little as three years ago I couldn't recommend Linux to the average home user. Nowadays I actively encourage people to ditch micro$oft, and seek out a suitable distro.

micro$oft are slowly committing suicide.... and I like it.

I do not think I am being at all unrealistic when I say: Here's hoping that 2010 heralds a Linux user base with greater than 50% market share. Bye bye micro$oft.

Think again, FSF tells Microsoft on GPL3

adnim

Perhaps...

everyone should just ignore any licencing that m$ imparts on it's products.

If you don't do so already, perhaps now is the time to start. Even better still, ignore micro$oft completely and go linux or OSX.

@ the anonymous and deluded

Religious types are so gullible, I see a business opportunity here for those unscrupulous enough to take advantage of such blind faith.

In answer to the pro god nonsense I have read here....

The way I see it their rules make me out a sinner,

why should I care at all what they think?

Without a real foundation I see their faith is just illusion

They're following blind whilst thinking they see.

Invisible are the shackles that religion drapes around them

define their horizons, yet they think they are free.

Ideals they say will save us all just drive us to destruction

Their faith has no foothold on reality.

I'm here surrounded in a valley of hate,

holy words preach intolerance and evil.

I deny their gods beyond my dying breath,

For their faith is the root of much evil.

Who writes what is holy who determines holy scripture?

are they words of god like I have been told.

Or prescript from the mouths of men who need to hold advantage,

over the flock that they fleece, who do as they're told.

Now I don't want to stop them all from being so deluded,

What right have I to tread on their toes?

I only ask politely they they keep their god fuelled madness,

unto themselves so it never grows.

Here I reside in a valley of death

betwixt the true purveyors of evil.

One one side the dollar on the other some god

these ways are the root of all evil.

I weep for all the children who will grow to know no better

the beauty of truth is kept from their eyes.

Indoctrinating young ones to perpetuate delusion

is one of their more insidious crimes.

An evil spreads amongst us from generation to generation,

that inbreeds an ignorance and poisons new minds.

With foundation based on myth and a core that's truly rotten.

religion is superstition traditionalised.

If you choose to believe that jesus was the son of some god and died for our sins(Although, we weren't around at the time) rather than being a political activist who just couldn't keep his mouth shut. So be it. It doesn't make you right.

Profiteering,

from a captive audience, Despicable.

Patientline, should be a non-profit making entity. (although making enough profit to pay wages and re-invest). And so should the water, electricity and gas supplies. The vast majority of this countrys' populace do not have a choice on whether to use supplied water, gas and electricity. Thus are forced to pay whatever the suppliers demand. With profits for shareholders and the directors of these companies running into hundreds of millions, we are being ripped off.

I wonder what the profit margins for Patientline are. They say they have to recuperate their investment. I say they went into this with eyes wide open expecting to be able to charge enough to pay for the kit and the board of directors' Bentleys and Ferraris within the first year or two, by ripping of the sick and infirm. What b4574rds! Just a little worse than those running the water, electricity and gas companies.

RE: All this quibbling over specifics

You made me smile... I agree. I see this. But should we be so fatalistic? And did I ever, ever own my own balls?

As for Jimmy's' stance. I, in my romanticism prefer to think of it this way: I make music, and I would be real pissed if I discovered someone selling shitty copies of my tunes and ripping listeners off. However, if they were selling high quality copies fair enough. Obviously it would be nice to get a few pennies, but what the fugg. The music, the message, the communication to me, is the point. Not the pounds, shillings and pence. Maybe Jimmy doesn't really think of it this way, it's just nice to think he might :) No, I don't wear rose coloured glasses, but it is nice to think through them once in a while. Not everyone w*nks over the almighty dollar.

Ask.com unveils anti-Google tool

adnim

@the anonymous critic of Dillon

Although you have a point, there are always those who will accept an invasion of privacy, and the appearance of advertisements all over a web page. So I thank you for allowing ads and the tracking of your internet usage. For it is folk like you that will keep the internet alive and free for those of us who block everything we don't want to see.

On the other hand it is unfortunate that surfers do allow cookies and click on ads, it only encourages the "bad practice" of filling the Internet with advertising.

I rarely ever see an advert these days and I never accept cookies, except from a few trusted domains. If a site requires me to allow cookies, I go find the information I am looking for elsewhere. I never ever see those distracting and often noisy flash adverts. My girl doesn't block any ads whilst surfing. When I look at her screen it is a mess of flashing\changing images and colour. On some pages it is so bad it overwhelms the content.

My rights?

I do not recognise that the BBFC, or anyone for that matter, has any right to decide what I can and cannot view, play or experience. Yet my willing failure to recognise their right does nothing to stop them from choosing what I can legally view, play or experience.

Who the fugg are these people? And why should they have any right at all over what I, we view etc.

When I was young I thought I lived in a free society based on honesty(yup I really did). And to a much greater extent than today, it was. Getting older however has taught me a few things... There isn't a great deal of freedom here in the UK at all. We have self appointed saviours of morality telling us how we should all behave. We have the supremely arrogant running the country, who create laws to counter the slightest hint of threat to their base of power. Who then have the audacity to tell us it is for our own good! And we have media using adjectives to describe the news, not just simply reporting it. In fact there is always someone or some kind of system somewhere attempting to forge opinion and coerce our thinking. On top of all that, I cannot legally play a computer game because, according to the opinion of a group of people for whom I do not give an expletive, it might corrupt me and make me a violent killer. Or perhaps worse still, fall into the hands of a youngster and turn him into a serial killer. The one thing more likely to turn me into a violent killer above everything else is being dictated to by a bunch of pompous, self righteous fools who believe that THEY know what is best for me, ultimately deciding what I legally can and cannot do. Don't let anyone tell you that this is a free country.

The message not getting through

No one is hearing me, So instead of speaking in a louder voice or trying new methods of getting my message across. I will just change what I am saying instead. We are governed by those completely unfit for the task.

If I get really, really drunk, I find a good strong spliff and a snort of coke sobers me up enough to drive perfectly well. I just don't know what all the fuss is about.

For those unable to tell.... I am joking, I do not drink and drive nor condone such behaviour.
