Server, disc glitches mar Battlefield 3 launch

Adrian Jooste
Facepalm

I'll be very suprised if Activision's release goes any better than this. The last 2 COD's have been a joke with the last one being the worst of all for glitches, bugs and lag. Shame of these mega publishers for putting out sub-par product at a premium rate.

National Identity Card holding chumps have buyer's remorse

Adrian Jooste

Not all of those who signed up wanted in on this

Don't forget any foreign national applying for any kind of visa to reside in the UK was forced into accepting the ID card as their proof of having a visa at all. No more stamps in passports.

Some keep banging on about people wanting this and are stupid because they opted in but I would think a lot of the final number of cards issued were not wanted or asked for.

Guilty or not, you're paying

Recently I went back home for a trip to see friends and family for two months. Good times were had and I was pleased to see how enthusiastic the country was about the upcoming world cup.

One night a mate and I went out for a drink in Jozi (Jo'burg) to meet a friend who lived out there. We are both from Cape Town so aren't familiar with the roads and areas of Jozi. Being in different surroundings always makes you a little nervous which would prove to cost us later.

After have one beer over the course of an hour (Amstel 330cl bottle) we drove back to my brothers house where we were to spend the night.

Along the way there was a road block and we got pulled over. My mate was driving and was asked what he was doing on the roads at 1230am. He said we'd met a friend and had a drink. Big mistake. Out came the breathalyzer and he was told he was over the limit. Ignorance was not on our side when he said the limit was 0.15 and he had blown 0.16. The officer would also not let us see the reading or get retested.

After he threatened us with 2 nights in jail because it was the weekend and we could only be processed on Monday, he said "so what now". Obviously this was our que to cough up. R400 later we were allowed to drive off foaming at the mouth knowing we'd been done in by the very people employed to serve and protect.

I suggest the commentard who recommends obeying the rules of the road doesn't go to my homeland because even his squeaky clean driving will be punished, especially if the officer hears you're from out of town...

This is why people like pigspotter exist back home.

WTF?

Steam

I too use Steam pretty much exclusively when purchasing games. However, lately I have noticed that latest releases are being sold at the highest price point the title can go for (£35) while I can order a physical copy from the likes of play.com often for £10 cheaper.

I really cannot figure out how an online delivery system which removes the costs of manufacturing a dvd (installation/intro booklet, dvd cover, dvd and delivery) can end up costing more than the physical version.

The above problem applies to the digital music and movie industry too. A downloadable film costs as much if not more than a physical copy from any high street store.

Can anyone enlighten me as to how these two delivery methods cost widely different amounts and more importantly, why the digital copy often costs more than a physical version.

Canadian cops taser 'naked and agitated' man

Adrian Jooste

Fair?

He gets beaten with a stick, man-handled, pepper-sprayed and then a dog is set loose on him only to finally electrocuted and he's the one charged with assault... I suppose it would only be considered to be excessive force if the events had unfolded in reverse. Tazer first, pepper-spray, dogs and batons later.

UK.gov revives net cut-off threat for illegal downloaders

Adrian Jooste

Internet governance: and so it begins

It will start with this loose and wide spread carpeting of what's legal and illegal relating to the "creative industry" and will end with our every move online monitored, recorded and archived. Labour has already come right out and said that's the plan with Jaqui Smiths uber-database of all internet use by everyone in the UK under the ruse of our protection from terrorism.

It won't be long before they start implementing more and more rules and regulations on basic internet use. As has been mentioned above, there are SO many question marks to all of this. Multiple users in one household, wireless network security, openly sharing connections, who's going to be held accountable? They'll soon figure they need more stringent methods of nailing users to the wall above just saying, "we have your IP downloading/uploading files which have copyright protection".

All Dark Lord Mandelson has to do is say the word and a new method/technology will be used to monitor our use even further (P2P user or not). It starts with the excuse of the protecting copyrights and ends with even more liberties being eroded and erased.

Just look at all the different and bizarre ways the anti-terrorism legislation has been used to harass citizens. You don't think this new scheme won't start spreading into everyday, legitmate internet use? It won't be the first or the last time it happens...

The internet is one of the last bastions of true freedom of speech and anonymity and that's bad for the business of politics.

Legalise it, Cypress Hill will advertise it.

The problem is, it will never be legalised. How will the "man" keep control over a crop that can grow just about anywhere? Licenses anyone?

That's a very good point. I know you have to always accept the terms and conditions of the software before you install it and if you don't accept them, the installation doesn't continue. I'm assuming that in those T's & C's it has a licensing section with all kinds of crazy clauses.

I truly believe that this £16,000 win DL has had is all very convenient. Now all of a sudden they asking for 25,000 more names. It started with only 300 last year, then a further 750. They are obviously getting a lot of people to fall for their strong arm, "I AM THE LAW" judge dread tactics and forking over cash left, right and centre.

I'm thinking that if you ask some of the questions mentioned by Reg readers above, you won't get a response and you won't hear from them again. They playing the percentage game, and they winning.

I wish this country would treat the knife wielding chavs with this kind of disproportionate fining. If they can say the parents are responsible for what happens on i-net connections in their name, even if it's a minor commiting the offence, then they should do the same to parents who let the kids roam the streets with mums kitchen knife in their back pockets. I can promise you those parents would all of a sudden take a much bigger interest in their own childrens lives just as will parents getting threatening letters from law firms regarding copyright violations.
