Microsoft, Asus launch anti-Linuxbook campaign

Pascal Monett Silver badge

It had to happen

As soon as Microsoft put its grubby mitts on this project, this outcome was inevitable.

What I would like to know is how those that originated this project can look at themselves in the mirror in the morning. Or has Monkey Boy given them Personal Grooming Assistants so that they don't have to any more ?

Morons

For 15 minutes, really, they could have waited fourteen more before uploading. I think this is more a case of "Upload the page now, so when the results are announced and everybody checks our page, we'll be ready".

Even so, there are rules. These morons have just learned that, once you publish on the web, it is immediately publicly available. Since these are supposed to be people who know the rules, it serves them right to be legally flogged.

Keelhaul the lot of them ! If we don't know why, they surely do !

What Exchange 2007 can't do

Pascal Monett Silver badge

Re: "it will be the most tested, production ready version yet"

Yadda yadda yadda (C) Microsoft PR.

We've heard that bull for every single MS product release for the past twenty years. It may even be right, but it won't keep Exchange 2010 from being an unreliable, virus-spreading turd.

The only issue Exchange 2010 is going to address is the dip of the failing MS server market - by requiring more servers to do the same, unreliable job.

Boffins build basis for 9TB DVDs

Pascal Monett Silver badge

Hmm, let's see

2000 DVDs worth of data, that works out to about 13750 CDs of information, or the equivalent of 5.83 million floppy disks.

That could also translate to 3,645,812,500 pages of A4 text, or 364,581,250 high-quality images (although, with today's HD and pr0n, those numbers most certainly should be re-evaluated).

Re:Hah

"Most of those actually buying and complaing DRM annoyance ... are probably pirates"

Way to reveal that you are a troll.

Remember Painkiller ? A 3-disc set that had such a tight security that the discs out of the box refused to recognize that they were legitimate ?

I ought to know, I was one of the sheep that got fleeced by that particular DRM scam. Feels reel good to bring home a legitimately-bought brand-new game and, when putting the first install CD in, getting a "Please insert original disc" error.

The only thing I hate more than DRM is people accusing those who complain about DRM of being pirates.

Besides, real pirates don't complain about DRM, they snigger quietly and go on playing the gorram game.

Another Gov IT failure in preperation

"Police, social services and health agencies all noted signs of abuse in the run-up to her death, but each agency acted in isolation"

Something tells me that a database is NOT the solution to this problem, better inter-agency communication is.

Maybe the police, social services and health agencies could have a dedicated Child Menace officer, tasked with keeping other agencies up-to-date on what his agency has discovered ?

But why try to be smart when it is so much easier to throw money at an IT project ? After all, computers are magic, and everyone knows that the solution is always in a database.

Blech !

Hacked flight sim site in catastrophic crash and burn

Pascal Monett Silver badge

"Who would have predicted"

Nobody can "predict" server failure or hacking, that is why there exists a thing called a BACKUP.

Your "approach" was akin to building a house in a flood zone, then counting every year without a flood as a validation of your poor management skills.

Meanwhile, hard disk size has been continuously increasing and prices have been continuously dropping. Worst-case scenario for backups : take the server offline and plug in a bloody USB external disk. I'd wager they have some models with more disk space than the server.

I know hindsight is 20-20, but this is not a case of hindsight. Any admin worth his title knows that without a working backup, any server is just a victim waiting for its killer.

Well, you got yours now. You had six years to prepare for this, and you did nothing.

I don't feel sorry for you.

France says 'Oui!' to three strikes for music pirates

Pascal Monett Silver badge

More importantly

How long before somebody brings this to the European Court ? After all, our good ol' Euro deputies have basically just said that cutting people off without due process is illegal and shouldn't be done, right ?

And France is a major player in the Euro sphere, right ?

As usual, France makes itself look ridiculous without even trying.

And yes, I'm French too.

Adblock developer offers 'please unblock me' tag to sites

Pascal Monett Silver badge

@Nic

As usual, there are exaggerations on both sides. You seem to think that anyone using an ad blocker systematically steals other people's lunch. Not so. And I will pass on your lightning-quick association with pirating music which has nothing to do in this debate and is much too troll-like to my taste.

Ads used to be simple still images. I had no problem with those, they didn't keep me from reading what I had actually come to read. Then they became animated images. At that point came the difference between usefully-animated-but-still-could-be-ignored and horribly-flashing-annoying-piece-of-crap-begging-to-be-shot. Not to mention Flash-based ads that are heavier than the page I actually want to see.

And don't get me started on popup ads that cannot be closed or other such malware-enhanced nuisances.

As a result, and because the ad industry has not been able to keep itself in check, I use AdBlock since I cannot stand having things shoved in my face, and ad makers do not seem to know anything else these days (I know, I know, that's an exaggeration as well).

What I would like to see is a mod of AdBlock that allows simple, still image ads and blocks all the other crap. After all, an ad in a magazine cannot be animated either, yet there are plenty so it must be useful enough.

What I would also like to see the next time you go in a store is a pair of ugly fat ladies in garishly pink tutus following you around and constantly yelling to your face to buy Mountain Dew. I'm sure you wouldn't mind shopping like that, since otherwise you're just a freetard music pirate, right ?

US spy boss pushes for unified cyber-command center

Pascal Monett Silver badge

Obviously

This is clearly a matter of National Security, since there have been sooo many documented cases of terrorists using the Internet and computers to communicate and generally coordinate their mischief.

It is obvious that simply following general, well-known and well-documented security guidelines do not have a chance in Hell of saving us, we most definitely need another well-funded, jackbooted government spy agency to ensure Our Safety.

Besides, it's a sight easier to have a Godmode agency in place for whenever some e-vesdropping must take place, instead of the usual ask-a-judge-get-a-warrant-set-the-wiretap procedure which is sooo last century, eh ?

Microsoft gears up for Windows 8

Pascal Monett Silver badge

"revolutionize file access in branch offices"

I can see what that will bring : a whole lot of misunderstandings, lost files and general pain for home users.

What, because you think that Microsoft is going to reserve this "revolutionary" file thingy to business users only ? Nonsense ! It'll be the centerpiece of Windows Number Whatever and everyone will have it regardless of whether or not they actually need it.

Don't forget, this is Microsoft, and Microsoft Knows Better (c) than you what your needs are. Proof ? Just look at Vista and its embedded DRM ! Isn't that a wonderful thing for the end user ? Obviously (says RIAA/MPAA) ! Did any end user actually ask for it ? Of course not ! How could they ? Nobody had ever thought of it before !

Given that the general agreement on Win 8 is that it is already a re-hash of Win 7, itself a spin-off of Vista based on XP with added DRM and fancy bells and whistles, I can't help but shudder when I think of the royal clusterfucks that will happen with a new, untested file system working, I should say laboring, under DRM restrictive processes. Sounds as fun as trying to single-handedly pull an elephant in one direction when the animal wants to go some other way.

I wonder what will happen when this new file system is pulled from the functionality list yet again ?

Microsoft security chief trapped in endless identity sales pitch

Very true, but where Microsoft is concerned, it is very black indeed.

Tree huggers will confuse shoppers, says Amazon

Pascal Monett Silver badge

"Amazon attorneys say the average person . ."

Is a moron, but in a slightly larger amount of words.

Let's see, the first word that jumps out on Amazon is "Shop", whereas on Amazee it's "Change". Amazee has no left-hand menu at all, nor does it mention the word "book" anywhere. The home pages are not in the same colors at all. The only thing you can quickly do on Amazee is "Join". Amazee has no "Cart" button or logo.

I agree, only a moron would confuse the two sites. Now lumping me in that category is tantamount to libel, maybe even slander.

I am insulted. My lawyer will contact yours, Amazon. Lawsuits at dawn.

McKinsey: Adopt the cloud, lose money

Pascal Monett Silver badge

@Mathias Pfuetzner

So, you liked the Cool-Aid so much you posted the same thing twice ?

Must taste real good then !

But tell me, don't you think Google is a bit of an exception as far as cloud computing is concerned ? I mean, is there any other company that has anything even close to what Google has as far as data-crunching is concerned ? I don't think so.

As for the rest of your arguments, you sidestep nicely the question of confidentiality. Banks are not going to use the cloud for anything and you know that. I'll wager that most companies will keep the mission-critical apps in-house as well because, you know, there's that liability thing that keeps cropping up now and then. And there's already enough trouble with loss of customer data as it is, no need to add cloud hacking to the mix.

In short, I really don't see how this new fad is going to go anywhere farther than it already is. Remote hosting is an old idea, and there are domains where it can be used advantageously - I believe those domains are already well-known and the services already available.

This cloud thingy strikes me as just another train for the Web 2.0 crowd to milk as far as they can, nothing more.

US mums sue anti-sexting crusader

Pascal Monett Silver badge

Child porn ? Fuck off !

Let's make one thing clear : child pornography is when an _adult_ takes pics of minors in various states of undress or suggestive poses.

If the minor takes pics of him- or herself, it's no longer child porn ! It may be stupid, but it cannot be labeled as child porn.

This whole case reeks of zero-tolerance, overreacting do-goody twoshoes whose actions are way out of line with whatever the intent was. And I'd like to see a lawsuit come up to determine just how those pics were dug up in the first place.

After all, if American cops start random mobe searches in US universities and schools, I wager we'll hear a lot more about child porn soon, and possibly about regular porn as well !

Microsoft loudly disses secret 'Cloud Manifesto'

Pascal Monett Silver badge

We know the drill, Martin

Microsoft only complains that "one company" holds the cards when that company ain't Microsoft. It means that Microsoft is pissed that they are not the ones calling the shots. It also means that Microsoft will show great eagerness in getting its bloody hands on the specs in order to "enhance" them with proprietary plug-ins which will "encourage" developers to use the Microsoft version and none other.

Oh we know the drill all right, and God are we tired of it.

China brands Tibet beating video fake

Pascal Monett Silver badge

Re: China as "a respected member of the international community"

You forgot just one thing : China is respected as a member of the international community based on two things only : first, it can field an army of more men than most countries have people, and second, it has limitless market potential for capitalist money-grubbing CEO's to drool over.

Being respectful of people's rights has never been a criteria and probably never will be.

Microsoft: Judge us by our deeds on open source

Pascal Monett Silver badge

What a load of hot air

The usual Microsoft gumption is at work here. Judge you by your deeds indeed, do you think we've waited for your permission ? Do you think your track record is such a shining, spotless testament to your belief in Open Source ?

In case you might have missed it, Ballmer, we still remember the fact that you are a convicted monopolist, despite all those things Gates claimed to not remember. And we will never forget the hugely reported trial against Linux, which was really a perfect demonstration of your "commitment" to Open Source. By the way, Steve, have you ever actually published the 200+ infringements that you based your trial on ? I mean, apart from the one so poorly disguised by hiding it in another font ?

So, just to make it perfectly clear, Monkey Boy, your track record reads like a pimps' criminial record. Abuse (of customers and vendors), battery (of the judicial system), corporate misdoings (company takeovers just to kill a product), money laundering (i.e. tax evasion) and practically every crime we have a law for (metaphorically speaking), they're all in your record.

And we will never forget that.

Security in the clouds - or clouds in security?

Pascal Monett Silver badge

Nice article

I feel that this article outlines quite clearly the major issues that exist with "cloud service" operators. For me, my opinion of cloudy stuff is simple : banks and major multinational corporations will never allow their internal data to be hosted by someone else.

Ergo, without the boost and credibility that these key organizations give, this whole cloud thing will never really take off, or else will remain at the "host your mail and 100GB of data" level that it is today.

For the life of me though, I cannot understand that a public service, government-owned and government funded, without any commercial obligation, stoops to that kind of petty thievery. Where does this tendency come from ? What is it with civil servants these days ? Who in their right mind can possibly think that opt-out is the morally proper way to do things ? I can't get it. I just can't.
