it's a bit like a new car, why do people bother changing - because they like new shiny ones. they still do the same job, get you from a to b. A lot of the time, the 'old' car isnt really that old either.
Why do people do this?! Because we like the latest shiny stuff. Sure it might be buying into the trend or whatever, but i personally love it and will be slapping Win8 over the top of all my Win7 machines as soon as it comes out! (fresh install obviously!)
(fresh install on WP7 - hmmm.. something i haven't done for a while (or even 'ever' on this machine) - unlike with XP, which was roughly every 3 - 6 months....)
I don't understand these comments 'lining the pockets of the corporations' - they make a good product, you want to buy it, so you buy it.
if you want new shoes you go and buy a nice pair - am i lining the shoe manufacturers pockets - yes probably, but i wanted a nice shiny new pair of shoes.
much like i want a new shiny windows 7 computer etc etc - it's 1 product in a world of products and if you're interested in it, then 'buy into it' .
how boring would the world be if, in 2050, everyone was still using XP because the business-sense of a manufacturer thought "well, XP does everything we need, we may as well just give up now and go home..."
Business. Go Microsoft, Apple and whoever else is selling stuff to make a bucket load of money, keep the money flowing, the economy moving and technological innovations coming - i love it and am happy to pay for it.
XP is so old and tired nowadays, it looks like a dated piece of **** too...
Being a tech enthusiast i like to keep up to speed with the latest software (& hardware) - surprised at people on this site arguing the other way!
Move with the times or get left behind - i personally wouldn't touch an XP disc with a barge pole (unlike the first poster who i presume is still at home with a Commodore VIC20 sitting in the lounge plugged into a CRT via an aerial lead and a tape deck!) ;)
WP7 is by far the best phone i have ever used - my Samsung Omnia 7 is just AWESOME...
i can't wait for Mango, it's going to make an already excellent product even better.
(and the best thing about it is that it's NOT an iPhone! woohoo... i don't feel like a sheep! - i did though, when i owned one briefly).
Quidam - seriously?! i find that VERY hard to believe - what do you find that the phone 'doesn't do' that you need so badly - or where do you think it fails? i know everyone goes on about copy and paste a lot, but in reality, how often do you need/use this?
would be interesting to know your thoughts in detail...
i wouldnt touch anything apple if you paid me. in-fact, even if i won an iphone i would sell it to some poor unsuspecting ebayer.
i see apple as 'computers for dummies' with their one handed ipad machines, the most horrendous music manager (itunes), no right clicks (macs) and a phone which farts. i can see why so many people are wrapped up with it all, no, really...!
the majority of users go into a 'carphone warehouse' or equivalent, haven't got a clue what an Android, WP7 or whatever is - and will pick a 'Nokia'... that's how it's going to continue!
it's only us nerds that come on these sites you know! (less than 1% of user population probably!)
RegisterThis: i find it interesting that 3 people already 'thumbed down' your comments above! And your comments are not overly pro any O/S, just making sensible comments. A lot of these thumb-downers must be fanbois of another system other than WP7 - it makes you wonder why they read the WP7 articles in the first place (and no doubt this post will get thumbed-down to the max - go for it dudes - thumb me down!!)
sent from my... (it's not an iphone and it's not an android, symbian doesn't do it and webOS is unavailable...)
i'm loving my WP7, by far the best mobile solution out there!
iphone - how can anything be considered 'cool' when everyone has one is beyond me. And exactly how many farting applications do you want/need?! i consider these human purchasers as sheep. iTunes, with it's lovely 128k (or if you're lucky 256k) music - Apple is spoiling you with high quality products, eh!?
android - good luck in the future with this slightly too open OS - i'm sure we'll see a ton of malware/viruses spring up, autodiallers and £10 text messages for the user to cope with. The lack of fit and finish of android makes it feel scrappy and not polished. i'm sure the uber-geeks love it as they can make abacus apps and binary counters.
the 1BN investment from MS to Nokia should give a very good alternative to some of the crap already leading the way...
Having had my Samsung Omnia 7 since the official launch on Oxford St back in October, i can honestly say this is the best handset i have ever used!
It is just brilliant. I've had an iphone 3G in the past too, i also used a 4G again the other day and it really felt 'old' in comparison to this thing. Wp7 is so fluid and works so well as a mobile OS. I do agree people really should use it before bashing it - and i mean use it - like for a month or so, not just a quick 5 mins demo and then write it off...
i am happy to look at any tech going and really don't like this modern world of slamming everything from certain manufacturers... if it's good, it deserves credit, and this time, despite what many people like to think, Microsoft have definitely produced something truly impressive.
Can't wait for the future updates and the integration with Nokia is going to be fantastic no doubt, seeing how well they produce hardware.
i was in Orange's Oxford St store @ 8am on the 21st Oct! Had my Omnia 7 since then - best phone i've EVER had.
Only prob i've had is that i bought it on Orange and the signal sucks, so after two weeks of failed network, i switched to t-mobile and all is good again (and i know about the sharing of networks but it didnt make difference - Orange shows full signal but doesnt ring out - because it's showing full it never comes off and tries to look for T-mob)...but anyway, now on t-mob and the world is good again! this phone is absolutely BRILLIANT.
i have to feel a little proud when standing next to the sheep, err, sorry, iphone crowd! the screen on the Omnia 7 is unbelievable - makes the HTC devices look like cheap plastic toys.
highly recommend A+++++++++++++++++ Nice one Microsoft :)
i find the green power drives great in a mediabox, they stream video and music content perfectly & run nice and cool (which helps when there's 6 of them packed into one machine) - true there is a little delay when they are coming out of sleep, but for the purposes of a mediabox, this delay is not a problem.
i personally wouldn't use them in the enterprise or a demanding power-munching machine...
where are you supposed to put this 'mobile' device, especially in the summer when it's hot and people walk around with shorts and t-shirts on.
is this mobile device just designed for the home? not very mobile.
also, having the laptop sitting on your lap when on the sofa is easy - you dont have to hold anything. but how will this work, you'll always have to hold it like a baby?
i can't see these tablets catching on, but you never know...
shame that google havent actually written something from the ground up rather than just bolting onto a Linux Kernel. Will be interesting, but it's essentially another Linux distro.
i think we might need a new avatar with a 'Google Halo' and a 'Google Devil'
I'll be clicking Google Devil for this one...
i like Bing. It's worth a good week or two using it before dissing it or writing it off.
Being comfortable and knowing what to expect from Google is one thing, but i have found bing to be very relevant and the added features are a bit more interactive. Bing actually makes Google look really dated.
Both engines are obviously similar but at the same time do certain things very differently.
Maybe it's time for a change, i can't think of a product which has remained at the top slot forever, (apart from maybe windows!), walkman fell to ipod, maybe Bing will do the same to Google?
funny how most of you here probably haven't even tried Win7, but just love to slate it anyway! how sad.
i would recommend you stop the childlike bashing until you actually try the product...seems to me that just because MS have made it, you lot seem to instantly hate it. It is free, so why not uninstall the precious linux for a few weeks and give it a go. It's not that hard for all you techie's to rebuild a PC a few times is it?!
Windows 7 is the best O/S ever made, and it's not even finished yet! You will all see.
(and no, i dont work for MS).
Schroeder,
I do enjoy coming across as a 10 year old, it makes it so invaluable when communicating with people such as you, so that I can ensure I’m being understood. Pointless ‘Freetard’ comments and making silly assumptions about me and my ‘friends’ - whoever they may be - are proof of my requirement to talk to you as a child.
Posting comments which are IRRELEVANT in any article is pointless, be it Windows fans posting in Linux articles or vice versa. As previously said, I don’t read the Linux articles as I am not interested in Linux and therefore don’t feel the need to comment on them either. The fact that people spend so much time reading about something that they don’t like or aren’t interested in still surprises me.
At no time do I feel the need to ‘lock down’ windows articles, and they don’t need to be pro-windows either, BUT they do need to be RELEVANT... again I think something you are still missing here. People can be negative about a certain article, but it needs to actually be relevant to the article. Writing an article about ‘Windows 7 Beta availability coming to an end’ does not warrant “well try Linux”, “Linux is free”, “download Linux today” etc etc... Who cares, where is the relevancy? It’s not pro-Microsoft, it’s not anti-Microsoft, it’s just, well, totally and utterly irrelevant!
Bottom line matey, you ARE someone who uses silly and childish M$ symbols, regardless of how you try to defend yourself.
Thanks also for the last comment, glad my writing style is similar to a Microsoft guidance document, perhaps ‘el Reg should hire me.
oh, and ‘forum’ is a damn site quick to type than ‘The Registers comments section’
@Schroeder
so the use of one semi-vulgar word indicates i am semi-illiterate does it?! well, for one i wasn't aware we were being judged on the comprehensive use of our mother tongue and two, i believe a lot of the language exerted on this site well exceeds my own previous post.
In fact, I am far from some delirious teenage troll and am just incredibly frustrated that pretty much every article I read regarding windows 7 these days seems to have a non-stop flurry of people (who I have now termed ‘Linux twats’# reeling off useless information, which is neither relevant nor interesting to windows 7 enthusiasts. I am fully aware of the availability of the Linux operating system, and if I want to go and download it and use it, I will. It seems that a number of Linux users are using their spare time to try and ‘promote’ the operating system by posting irrelevant articles.
As another of the slightly bemused #and I presume also frustrated# users posted above, the distinct lack of Linux articles #possibly due to the smaller market share# means that there are less people posting irrelevant comments in them.
How much nicer #and more productive# would a forum be, if we could discuss the article in question, rather than having to ‘filter’ through all of the irrelevant information posted by people who obviously don’t care #nor like# Microsoft products.
Fortunately for me, I don’t bother with Linux and therefore have no interest in reading articles about it, let alone writing useless comments on Linux forums... #I have used it and didn’t like it compared to Windows, similar to the way I am proficient with Macs, but hey-ho I don’t use them either).
The fact that you are using silly and childish “M$” symbols and presume that anyone who comments on Windows articles doesn’t ‘shock horror’ use Linux indicates to me that you are somewhat blinded by what is happening in these forums... the reason people don’t want to read Linux articles in Windows 7 forums is because it has NOTHING to do with the article!
I am sure you love Linux and congratulations to you; I hope you enjoy a long and healthy life with it, but please... let the windows users enjoy their O/S too without all the Linux, Linux, Linux talk all the time...
