New Kindle: Wider, but still no broadsheet

Bob

Not sure I get it

So this is an ultraportable ebook reader, strictly monocrhrome, with limited multitasking functions, DRM, and wireless. For $500.

But then you could get a netbook, admittedly slightly heftier and with less battery life, but with an actual OS to do things other than reading books, can read books that aren't DRMified, has similar wireless abilities, and what am I forgetting, oh right, COLOR, for $200.

I'm not sure I understand the value here.

Hugh Jackman speaks of Wolverine leak heartbreak

Bob

What's really sad here...

is that when this movie is released and turns out to be complete crap, Fox now has an excuse for the bad ticket sales. It can't possibly be that word of mouth is getting around that it's a horrible movie, the millions who don't see it clearly pirated it.

Toyota USA goes all chatty

Bob

Oh hells

I bought a Toyota and raised hell when they tried to get me to sign a waiver to allow them to sell my personal information to "third parties." Eventually they agreed to let that slip, but then when I tried to register to view the loan details online, one of the terms of service was that they'd be allowed to sell my online habits as well.

I shudder at the thought of the spam I'd be getting from my damn car.

For the record...

It's not just chrome that has this blurb. The global Google terms of service do too in regards to posting your stuff through 'the services.' So any entries over Google's blog, google video, Picasa the imagehost, etc, fall under this as well.

Sony builds wireless data gang

Bob

Shocker.

"Quite why Sony feels it necessary to create its own version is a mystery, though the cynical might suggest that the licensing schemes are the most important factor here."

Please. It's Sony. They have a raging hardon for creating new proprietary formats. Lucky for us, most of them fail.

Gamers love in-game ads, ad industry-sponsored survey reveals

Thumb Down

Such a lie.

I once played Planetside, an online wargame set in the distant future far from Earth. It was a nice atmosphere... or it was until I charged into a base one day only to find ads for Deuce Bigalo 2: European Gigolo plastered all over the place. I wish I was lying. That was the end of my subscription.

These people are filthy, filthy liars.

There, I said it.

Gates is the most sensible person and competent the Bush administration has ever appointed (not that there's a lot of competition for sensibility and competence in the Presidential Clown Car that is the current administration), and regardless of the next president I would support his maintaining the SOD position. The fact that he A) has been willing to take his subordinates to task and hold them accountable, and B) hasn't spent the majority of his time in front of a microphone shouting "LOOK AT ME, I'M A SHILL" really makes him stand out.

El Reg celebrates 10th birthday

Bob

Wow, only 10?

I've been reading it since earlier in its life than I thought, I'd have said 15. Guess it's all that hard drinking.

Here's to 10 more.

Vista SP1 downloaders bite back

Bob

No problems here...

I just installed Vista SP1 on an nForce motherboard with nvidia SATA, nvidial 8800GTS, realtek audio drivers, and an intel processor. No problems here. The boot seems 10 seconds or so slower, but everything else seems to be responding normally or better.
