i work for 2nd Line Support at TT. i help anyone as much as i can. the physics and the network are never going to be wonderfull over distance but that's the copper.. Meh.

We're working Very hard on the customer support stuff.. and some of us Care A Lot. there's going to be a lot more UK-based support too.

As mentioned by others.. i know it doesn't help if you've got a sync fault, but Do have a look at the Forums.. there's lots of useful stuff there and some of the non-TT-staff members are very helpfull and enthusiastic. the staff on there are quick and keep an eye on it constantly.

As for the tiscali buy, Way Hay! here's to being Number Two (coff!).. but seriously.. this will be good. we've got a lot of good things to be doing this next few years.

Evesham Technology confirmed dead

Lol Whibley

there was a report on radio four mentioned the evesham death throes

The pan-European Office for the Ecodesign of everything

Lol Whibley

regulation = corporate pork payback

there'll be a back-end support market the moment they legislate for it.. The system will always be gamed somwhere and it'll be the finance-heavy corporates that fork out to get the correct classification for a product. There'll be a sub-service industry that will specialise in the processing of the proto-product to this new standard of compliance.

seems to that way already in the Patent world.. you have to pay a specialist to ensure you're intellectual property hasn't been staked by some prospector elsewhere.. the guides on safari always get paid in advance and all it gets you is where you wanted to be at the start of the process.. just in possession of a more insurable product. and you pay for that certainty and the 'protection' it brings.

another question: will it govern the import market for alternative manufacturers.. as mentioned previously, distribution is largely the proviso of much bigger organisations which own the mass-production/global-spread portion of a product's life.. and china has most of that sewn up.. there're many layers of import controll for grey products already, so will this devolve into a process of 'you want to market the product here, pay us some more and we'll consult on how it meets the eco-directives' ? hmm

as for this article, i second the various 'economists.. Meh!' sentiments. worse than Psychologists for supposition.

why are they in less poor taste being in the quotes than the actual text of the article? or is it that you can Chastise Ted but not the readers?(ted like being chastised methinks)

This to me sounded like the broke Politicos drumming up funds to fuel the impending take-over bid by way of talking up the funding futures market. It's all about scaring the incumbent international multi-billion corporations into pushing some non-accountable pork in the direction of the likely Managment-to-come.

Knighthoods? meh! Years of corporate funding and the qualitative values this capitalist monetarist global society demands in it's year-onyear growth forcasts... now that's more to their liking. They need the confidence of the markets, we've all had a set of clear examples of what happens when the bottle goes around a company's finances.

Nowt changes. This isn't news and reporting it as such is furthering the game as it stands. Nothing vested in that interest is there.. as for the quality of the overall article, as has been pointed by many others... Fail.

There's no riddle to Dell's Limerick move

Lol Whibley

they missed a trick..

I once worked for fujitsu (aka Fukutoo) . we were building big servers in a semi-skilled way in a warehouse in warrington.

we got very good at it, what with all the internicine warfare going on between fujitsu and ICL who were having fun merging and pointing out the flaws in each other's work ethic.. everything we did got tripple checked to the back teeth as the different teams of QOS monkeys on either side of the fence bitched at each other. by the end of it, we were turning out a couple of hundred 6-processor ML700 (?- details fail me) hand built a month between 6 of us.

Fujitsu had this idea it would be better (read: cheaper) if they were prodused by Danish people and not ourselves, with an eye to closing our department. As part of this, and typical of the corporate management mentality, they asked us to train our replacements.

ooooh we had fun. they sent a bunch of midlle-tech types over and we gave them most of the manuals and some of the verbal instruction we'd worked up in the usual ad-hoc 'this is how you get it to work' you generate on a fast-moving assembly line..

the upshot was, in the preceeding months once the work had been transferred to the Danes, the throughput dropped to 3 servers. Sales were still pushing the orders through with the idea that the work was going to be done the same as always..

move the work at your peril. it's never as good as it was.

much sympathy to the Irish, they got Fukutoo'd

RISC daddy conjures Moore's Lawless parallel universe

Lol Whibley

well duh!

people already just buy new computers when the old one dies.. they're 300 quid to replace. and most of that sort of system gets a significant upgrade as the purchase crosses the dual/quad core spec change of the last 2-3 years, most 'old' pcs being around the P4s with hyper-threading era.. purchaser gets a medium spec system from today's retail and watches the performance jump massively and yet still just does the same old stuff.. shopping and pr0n.

as for the software writing layer, it's been gettin lazy for years as a way of driving the upgrade requirement quotient. just look at the amount of bloat that ships with what was once a lean code-base.. it's not value-add when you stick features that no-one cares about into a program that should do the one job really well and was designed to do in less capaciously capable systems.

And this guy gets paid for this? people listen to him because he's done cool stuff previously...fine enough.

chef's are only as good as their last meal. this guy openly admits he ( and a massive chunk of industry.. Herd Science in action) did get it wildly wrong a few years ago and whole financial/corproate systems based their predictions on that path.

And their still employing him?

i had one recently that was approaching the end of it's licence period and began informing the laptop user that it was detecting many intrusion attempts and fighting them off successfully. very brave software it was..

it was an unfortunate situation really, the laptop had no connection to the outside world, either wired or wirelessly. there had not been any usb devices or other items added to it in several days. yet, it had several intrusion attempts happen to it in that state..

I can't help but wonder how that would happen, so near to the renewal date for the software and all..
