OnePlus One cut-price Android phone on sale to all... for 1 HOUR

Tom Richardson

Re: Does it receive the full 4G spectrum yet?

Actually it does work on Three currently, as they own a couple of LTE bands, and the one the OnePlus One doesn't support, is the one they dont' currently use for anything. Admittedly though that may change in future.

Amazon fuses LoveFilm, subs service, calls it Prime Instant Video

Tom Richardson

Re: Prime one-day delivery? Ha!

Strange, all my Prime deliveries turn up next day and the Amazon Logistics delivery guys are really good, making the effort to do stuff like leave packages with the neighbours if applicable. I even had a call from one of them once offering to bring my package to work for me because it needed signing for.

Inside IBM's vomit-inducing, noise-free future chip lab

Samsung touching up ROUNDED, CURVY plastic enhanced MODEL

Tom Richardson

No discernible unity?

If you move your thumb from side to side you will observe that the tip describes an arc, not a straight line. If the curve on this unit is right, operating it will be a lot ergonomically easier on the hand and thumb to use one-handed. And we all know what's useful for.

I worked as a field test engineer for Moto during this period, and the phrase WORKS AS INTENDED dredges up an old familiar sinking feeling...

Feeling poor? WHO took all your money? NOT capitalist bastards?

Tom Richardson
WTF?

Stick to tech

Between your ill-informed climate change denial and your Tory-loving politics you're pretty close to losing a reader here, Reg. Please stick to technology stories. You're at least passable at that.

What killed Motorola? Not Google! It was Moto's dire software

I used to be a Test Engineer working on handsets for Motorola, so thanks for that horrific little wander down memory lane.

PayPal drops into McDonalds, begs meat-guzzlers to give it a bonk

Tom Richardson
FAIL

Somewhat disingenuous....

Pay by bonk *phones* may be available in the UK but there aren't any services you can use them with! That might explain the so called "lack of interest".

Arcam rPac

Tom Richardson

But...

You could get an M-Audio Fast Track 2 for less money, or a Fast Track Pro for the same money and have a shitload of extra functionality. And it would probably sound better. If you could notice the difference.

Amazon's cloudy vid-tablet breaks cover: Not an iClone

Tom Richardson
WTF?

I don't really know why this is called a Kindle...

...and I think it's diluting the Kindle brand to call it one. A kindle to me is an e-book reader. This Amazon tablet lacks the two things that make the Kindle such a great e-book reader: e-ink and long lasting battery.

I'm also going to hazard a guess that given this tablet's far greater potential for data use, it's not going to have the included forever-free 3G connection that the Kindle has either.

How to... re-energise your Android smartphone's OS

Article Title Fail

I already have CM7 on my Desire so it doesn't affect me, but I like that you call an article "How to... re-energise your Android smartphone's OS", and then skip over the "How To" bit entirely.

Hackers crack crypto for GPRS mobile networks

Cracking GPRS allows you to intercept people's data, not their conversations.

ASA rules BT Wi-Fi service works with invisible routers

Tom Richardson

To be fair to BT

My phone picks up BTOpenZone pretty much everywhere in my home town, and many other places I've been including in the local park, car parks, and walking down the street in residential areas. SO I don't actually think this claim is particularly disingenuous.

Sony Ericsson lights up Xperia Arc

Tom Richardson
WTF?

No internal storage?

None at all? Are you sure about this? Because unless SE have done some serious fiddling, not all Android apps can be installed to the SD card, are Arc users simpley not going to be able to use these apps? And what about widgets and launchers and things which don't work very well when consigned to external storage, because Android tries to load them before the SD card is properly mounted?

Angry Birds struggle to take on Androids

Tom Richardson
WTF?

What?

"and developers are going to have to spend more time understanding the limitations of the hardware if we're not going to return to the arcane technical requirements that used to adorn the sides of software boxes. "

What on earth are you talking about? I can only assume you're referring to software for desktop machines - you do realise that we still have system requirements for that, right?

Nokia slips out Designed By Community handset

Brits take iTablet moniker for 12in iPad rival

Tom Richardson
Jobs Horns

pwned.

Although it always takes Apple to get the marketing right. I expect now that they have broken the concept of the tablet PC with the general public, other manufacturers will have a much easier time selling them. Much like they did with the mp3 player.

CRB checks are a joke

A friend of mine is currently waiting to start work with mentally challenged adults. I say currently waiting because he cannot start until he has his CRB check done - something that was requested half way through November and is still not complete. Meanwhile, he is unable to earn any money in the job he has already got because he cannot work. Just to help financial matters he his girlfriend is pregnant and is due in a matter of weeks. Well done, government.

Ten of the best... noise-isolating earphones

Tom Richardson

@Pete

While what you say is true, you're making an assumption that everyone's using these in exactly the same way. Yeah, I do listen to some 128kbps mp3s through my Sennheisers CX500s, but I also use them for listening to FLACS, and for auditioning mixes from my studio in .wav format to get an idea what they're going to sound like on consumer earbuds as opposed to my monitors. But that aside, I don't see anyone claiming that they are going to magically improve the quality of your source. They do a great job of filtering outside noise and I haven't seen anyone claim anything more than that. That filtering of noise greatly enhances the *perceived* sound quality.

Tom Richardson

What?

No mentioned of Sennheiser's CX300, 400 or 500s? You've failed.

User Agents

@ Paul, AC. When using Opera Mini, to some sites it sends a generic Opera Mini user agent, to others, it makes a combined Opera Mini/handset specific user agent generated by the proxy. Try it on a couple of those "what's my IP" sites, you'll see. Even when it's just the generic opera mini one though, your device is still being identified in the header seperately fromthe user agent by "X-Opera-Mini-Phone-UA=<original deviceUA" and "OperaMiniPhone = <device name>".

Maybe this is different if you've installed OM yourself rather than getting a phone with it reloaded.

Tom Richardson

V3?

I'd seriously question the V3 usage stats. Not least because on some handsets combined with certain builds of Opera Mini, the Opera Mini proxy just defaults to sending a Motorola V3 user agent instead of the one for the handset you're actually using.

Nintendo in profit on each Wii sold

Tom Richardson

@Ian Michael Grumby

You can boot up Linux on a Wii, that's no great feat mate. I think engineering a device that enterprising hackers *aren't* able to get Linux running on would be more of an achievement.

Nokia introduces second 6260

Tom Richardson

Yeah..

Nokia have recycled quite a lot of their model numbers recently, I have no idea why. Very irritating for carriers who have to set them all up on content provisioning and device management systems when there are already phones call the same thing.
