How a Tory gov will be the most tech-savvy in history

DrStrangeLug
WTF?

I dont care how tech savvy you are

But how much in the pocket of big business you are.

Lets see if you can oppose idea's in government that you opposed in opposition (re: mandybill)

Swing 2.0

About a year ago a lot of people starting shouting for Swing 2.0 as well as JavaFX. Some of this is already happening with the swing generics project but frankly its not enough.

Layout managers

Layout managers

Layout managers

Worth mentioning 3 times because the thing everybody mentions against swing is the layout control.

Not handset skype though

This is probably the same as 3's skype offering, where the Voice to IP is actually done by the carrier and not the handset.

And Skype is well known to let security and law agenices in through it's revolving back door.

I'll avoid this the same way I avoided WGA - shut off windows update completely.

Funny how any leftish leanings of any group get highlighted as political bias, but nobody every poitns out the rightish leanings of the finanicla world.

Use an image key

Easy, make an image key. Require them to scan an image of a prime ministerial pardon absolving you of all crimes committed .

Make sure your "key" includes the signature of the current prime minister.

Hydrogen is not cheaper

I wish people would stop saying hydrogen all the time like its some magic solution. It takes three times the energy to travel 1 mile on hyrdrogen than on battery.

And nothing can hold hydrogen in a tank indefinitely - it leaks away and you're left empty.

Since storage has been ruled illegal surely handing over these to the police upon request makes you an accessory ?

No such thing as a "Free Ride"

Yep, no Free Rider here. I pay for my connection , so does the BBC.

Oh wait, there is a free ride. BT is providing content from the BBC without paying them for it.

So what we do when ID Cards 1.0 finally dies?

Requires a change of attitude not just perspect.

Solving the problems of identity and privacy, yes, this checks all the boxes. There's no way the Sir Humphries of this world will let that through - they want the Police, Intelligence and "commercial partners" accessing this data.

The purpose of the ID card is not just to provide someones identity but to record it as well. And recorded information is useless unless it will be read again. Its the reader list that forms the core of the problem with the scheme.

OS upgrade

If you really want the slide out qwerty keyboard get the old G1. The 1.5 update is being pushed out to those as well so the spiffy new OS features will appear on both phones.

If you've got a unlocked one on another network though you'll need to root it and update it manually.

How the Google stole Christmas

Google is a SERVICE not SOFTWARE

What's happening here is that advertisers have paid to advertise on google and then made the assumption that that meant advertising on PC's in browsers.

Do any of these advertisers know that their adverts will show up when you google in a mobile browser ? Do they want to turn of their adverts for anyone looking on a Samsung or Motorola ?

Paris because she knows a service when she gets one.

US: BAE 'could have' pirated our secret Stealth 3.0 tech sauce

The cost would naturally be cheaper without espionage

The original US stealth demonstrator was built in the 1970s as project Have Blue, which eventually evolved into the F-117 Nighthawk. Improvements in stealth technology ( F-22, F-35 etc) have come about because of increases in computer power since the design of the F-117 - and how much more bang per buck to you get out of a computer since the 70s?

Trying to duplicate a 30 year old technology is naturally going to be cheaper than creating it first yourself - that's the price you pay for being first. Technology gets cheaper as it gets older.

Paris because the first caveman to wield a stick was a genius but now even she can do it.

Police nick 460 a day for using mobiles while driving

DrStrangeLug

More speed cameras = less police

"Quite how catching more people using mobile phones, and for careless driving, exposes a reliance on speed cameras isn't made clear." The link (and Mr. Goodwill isn't the first to notice this) is that increases in speed cameras on major roads have reduced the number of in-vehicle patrols - that little robocop in a box has allowed the old fashioned bio-cops to concentrate on non-traffic crimes.

Paris because even Paris could see that a box that only catches one offence isn't going to catch them all.

AI prof: The robot terrorists are coming! Aiee!

DrStrangeLug

Aussie Doodlebug ?

Didn't some australian build a modern V1 flying a few years back(without a warhead) as a proof of concept for this kind of attack ? I seem to recall he wanted to demonstrate how easy and cheap this was and asked why nobody was preparing for this attack.

( I also recall that he asked the authorities before he built it "I'm not going to get into trouble for this am I?" and they said "No mate, as long as it doesn't have a warhead". Then when he built it they got their nickers into a twist and he got arrested.)

I'd have to give it to the prof on Control, Damage and Agression but not on style.

For that matter if all thats required is a screenshot of a torrent swam then what happens if I fake one up showing somebody else is sharing my home movies - can I get that person disconnected ?
