Guinness to hit three quid a pint

Blake St. Claire
WTF?

@John 90 Re: So cheap!

| Guinness is a fiver a pint here in Dublin. Most of the other beers are around the same price.

You're drinking in the wrong pubs I guess. I was just in Dublin last week and never paid more than about €4 for a pint of G. -- e.g. at The Bleeding Horse or the hotel bar. I've still got the receipts to prove it.

Not against the law to play it.

Even if it might be against the law to buy it.

I remember an El Reg article awhile back about a 13 year old girl in Blighty, pregnant by a 12 year old neighbor, with an accompanying picture of them with the baby, playing an 18+ game together. (Later it was revealed that the boy wasn't really the father.)

Perhaps they do, but they -- or at least Comcast -- keeps giving me the same IP every time.

It's so reliable that I can run my domain -- web server, mail server, etc. -- as if it were a permanent static IP.

I can't remember the last time they renumbered the local network -- a couple years ago maybe? Other than that the only reason it changes is if you change your router, e.g. like I had to do recently when I switched VOIP providers for my land line. And probably if I had bothered to clone the old router's MAC addr in the new router then perhaps not even then.

I second that. I've been using BSD since 386BSD 0.1 and using FreeBSD as my broadband firewall/gateway since 3.x or 4.x days and never had my system compromised.

I know plenty of Linux users who can not say the same thing.

Fake Police Checkpoint?

Versus a real police checkpoint? Really? Do you have those?

I've never seen one in the times I've been there. Admittedly that isn't especially meaningful -- I'm over there pretty infrequently, and usually limited to the greater London area.

So would anyone really be fooled by a police checkpoint? Should they be?

And no, I'm not talking about Saturday night drunk driving traps or police presence after the fact at something like a terrorist bombing.

Just curious. I'll keep my eyes out for one next time I'm over.

@Version 1.0

> LA is the two letter code for the state of Louisiana ... Los Angeles is L.A. indicating that the city name is two words.

As someone who grew up in The Land of LA, let me assure you that many, many people do abbreviate Los Angeles as "LA", just as we also often write UCLA, CSUN, and <bleah> USC, which, by your logic, must always be written U.C.L.A., C.S.U.N., and U.S.C., just to give a couple examples.

Next thing I suppose you'll be telling us that CA is some international standard two letter code for something like Canada, or that USC is the University of South Carolina; when in fact those of us who know better know that they are shorthand for California and the University of Southern California, respectively.

Coat? It's 78°F/25°C in LA, don't need no stinking coat.

I'm waiting for an epiphany. I'm not holding my breath.

The bank's rentacop shoots your buddy and he bleeds to death waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

I expect YOU are going to be charged with manslaughter on top of everything else. Manslaughter is a felony criminal charge that will be brought by the local government. On top of that, your friends wife might file a Wrong Death lawsuit -- a civil case -- against you. And no, that's not Double Jeopardy. You can go to trial for both, and found guilty of both.

Say what? Don't know what hole you crawled out of but in most places here you can buy beer, wine, and whiskey in the supermarket.

Wallyworld may only sell beer, but then consider their typical clientele. If they sell wine, it's probably in a cardboard carton. Couldn't tell you actually, I've only been in a Wallyworld twice in my life. Three times if you count the time I went to an Asda.

@Hermes

> Merkins have a lower voltage

News to me.

We have 240v to the house. The transformer up on the pole has a tap. We run three wires to the house, the third wire (neutral/ground) is attached to the center tap on the transformer. Thus we get 240 for water heaters, stoves, ovens, and to charge our electric cars and rayguns; and 120v for everything else.

Wish you guys would get this figured out. It's not too much different than what you have: 408v 3-phase up on the poles. Your transformer on the pole has three taps, you take any two to give you 240v.
