US bandwidth gets new caps

Peyton

What kind of cap?

Do those numbers refer to downstream or total? I know with WildBlue you have caps in both directions (and they're not the same - upload cap is much smaller than d/l).

They keep saying 1% of users blah blah blah - I bet if they implement a 40GB cap, we're going to find it's a lot more than 1% of their subscribers that cancel their service. I'm sure the telcos are salivating over the new customers they'll get...

I think I misinterpreted this one

I took his dig at UK satellite progress as just a way of expressing a wish that they would do more research in the space exploration arena.

My apologies: When in doubt, I will strive to err on the side of vitriol and malice from here on.

Russian rides Phantom to OS immortality

Peyton

Obviously a programmer, not a marketer

He admits he can't siphon off users from the Windows world - I'll go one step further and say the Mac users will remain faithful to Apple... That leaves his target demographic as those who are using some remaining OS... and then he proceeds to insulting their choice. Brilliant.

St. Marys Rd?

Just saw that in an AP article on this topic - looks completely ridiculous. Makes me want to go and change it to St. Maries :\ Ya know, I'm usually not one for nitpicking points of grammar, but in choosing between including a tiny little mark (that in its own little way represents hundreds of years of history) in the name of correctness and making things (allegedly) more correct but looking ridiculous, aesthetics is going to win out with me.

@watch out

No, Lester need not be concerned. I have encountered this type of compatriot in the wild, and they are usually most proud of whatever degree of arsenal they manage to accumulate. After all, those guns are not cheap, and represent many paychecks - think of it as his version of a Ferrari. If he learns of his new célèbre, the only thing Lester should be wary of is an invitation to the resulting party (probably involving vast amounts of PBR* and tiki torches).

Texas lawyer sues Citibank over fake cheque scam

Peyton

An interesting new twist?

I'd like to hear how this washes out. It does seem that not only was this Texan duped, but to some extent Citibank as well? That seems like a new angle to the 419. Is tripping up the bank as easy as opening an account, writing a bogus cheque, then closing the account? Would Citi still, initially, claim that cheque was good?

Or is the answer more simple: was the employee that called Citi disgruntled and wanting to see his boss get shafted?

US Congress kills digital TV delay

Peyton
Paris Hilton

Am I confused here?

What's all this about no testing? I just grabbed this off a Boston TV station's site:

Television stations have been preparing for the transition from analog to DTV since the late 1990s, when they began building digital facilities and airing digital channels *alongside* regular analog broadcasts. (* added by me)

re: satellite users requesting coupons - Weather can knock out your satellite - it's often nice to still be able to tune in a station for the weather and see if the odd tornado is heading your way.

User-generated reviews - blessing or bull?

Peyton

My first real use of Yelp

Was on a visit to San Francisco. It (mis)led me to a mediocre restaurant in Chinatown that had gotten great reviews - even based my order off recommended dishes from the reviews. *However* - in the absence of Yelp, I would've had essentially nothing - maybe just a directory listing at best. So even if it leads you astray, I think bad information can be better than none at all. Also, as a side-effect, you can find useful information not kosher to any actual reviewing (in my case, getting tipped off about the unusual reservation/seating arrangement for a restaurant (with the dubious name 'Canteen' 8))

I'm sure it will change

AbFab was run on Comedy Central a few years ago and it didn't fly, ergo I'm sure it will be tweaked in the remake. Open-sourcers get with the git

Peyton
Paris Hilton

confused

A lot of developers work off laptops - which are not the most resilient pieces of hardware, what with the abuse they often take. Is one of the premises of git the idea that you commit a mountain of changes locally and after possibly weeks of work, commit to your main server (which should be raided and backed up) - the whole time praying that your globally uncommitted changes are safe?

Also, one of the touted benefits seemed to be that you could avoid checking in potentially embarrassing code? A coder with this hangup may have some ego issues (or be a damned lousy coder - either way this seems to be a cure for a different sort of problem).

"normally you'll say something vaguely constructive"

Hey gimme a break - apparently there's some event going on at the White House today - it's got me all distracted - I've had to upgrade my flash player and everything. (Also, my goal is usually to just *not* be unequivocally inane and/or anger our moderator - so hopefully I'm still on target ;p )

I was thinking more about the posts above the AC's than yours tbh. I concur that the Catholic Church's history is tumultuous and convoluted. For me, that makes it interesting - but not something to get worked up about. But the Dan Brown-esque conspiracy theories bore me at this point, as do the "clever" remarks - I've just seen them too many times before. I think snide remarks are great - when they're original.

Feel free to use the label "anti-religion evangelist" all you want though - I'm happy to oblige ;)

Peyton

@Is this about...

I get just as bored with anti-religion evangelists as the next guy, but the youtube angle does, indeed, make this IT related - I find the ~2000 year-old religious institution + web 2.0 combination interesting in an anachronistic sort of way.

'Miracle' plane crash was no miracle

Peyton

"and a little luck"

Yes - it's that little piece of uncertainty that makes people want to call it miraculous. But regardless of religious outlooks, or absence thereof, "miracle" can be any outstanding accomplishment - no pesky interference from deities required. That's certainly a very high bar for "outstanding" if a crash landing with 100% survival doesn't cut it.

Also, if you're going to harp on this 'miracle-free' theme, maybe it's best to avoid statements like "Thank heavens..." ?

I guess the point of this article was to make sure the talents of those involved weren't overlooked? I don't think that's needed - in all the coverage I saw, everyone was thanking the pilot, the rescuers... actually everyone but god. Strange article...

Librarians redubbed 'audience development officers'

Peyton
Unhappy

Went through this already in the US

Apparently they (I really don't know who "they" is tbh, but anyway) decided that librarians deal with a lot more than books these days, and rather than just sort of update the word "librarian" to connotate more than book lender/fine collector, they had to relabel them "library media specialists". Sadly, unlike their Edinburgh counterparts, I know a lot of the librarians here embraced the new terminology with open arms.

McKinnon lawyers push for UK trial

Peyton

@radian

I, too, was confused by the bubba references... probably because I live in "The South" - harder to see the whole forest if you're actually in the middle of it. Maybe a sort of synecdoche? Bubba being an old, old word that started 'down south' to refer to an individual, eventually reused as slang to refer to rednecks, then (outside the States) extrapolated out to apply to the country as a whole? I'm just guessing, since it's not used here much anymore, but I googled "brit slang bubba" and didn't get any leads lol.

Also, grits = polenta - just available more coarsely ground. Both are gross when plain, good when prepared well.

Peyton

oh geez, now I'm confused

The suggestion that if he was looking for ET evidence, it means that he may not be "all there" - from our resident ET!?? Actually, that may be sort of apropos ;p

Of course there is a doubt - even if the judge agrees with that defense at his trial and declares he's nutters, there will still be doubt. Without doubt, where would all the lovely conspiracy theorists be?? On that note, these comments have rehashed everything that has already been said a million times over *except* that it's some sort of US government conspiracy. I must say, I'm disappointed.

Facebook breastfeeding pic takedown gets backs up

Peyton

Nah, it's not jealousy

It's just a matter of whether or not you've joined that religion. You know the one - where things that are wrinkly, discolored, and smelly are now "beautiful". Where one of the most painful and, erm, indecorous moments of a person's life is something to be filmed - 'cause let's face it, we'll want to watch that over and over again, right?

Could it be this is just another case of class and good taste taking a back seat to the inane need to publish every last detail of one's life. I'm sure junior will love it when he hits his teens and the pic of 'mom and him' is still in some google cache... And no, this isn't just the Y chromosome talking - none of the ladies I know well would be inclined to post pics of this sort. I'm not saying it's actually obscene mind you - a response of "grow up" would do the complainers a lot of good. But I can understand why one would get confused by the idea "omg omg omg I must be allowed to post these pics on this service of yours I leech for free"

Dogs and arson feature in top 10 data recovery disasters

Peyton

@Pierre

The NSA can, allegedly, recover data from a hard drive that has been completely overwritten seven times, so it's not unlikely data recovery labs can do this to some extent as well. This apparently has to do with the fact that writes don't perfectly align every time, so traces remain of previous writes. This is why secure delete programs will overwrite a deleted file repeatedly with zeros, ones, and random data.

I've always taken a rather jaded perspective on the whole grammar-nazism I've encountered on the Reg - but now I realize that something as simple as two tiny little marks - in this case a " - can really bring out a profound emotional response in people. eHarmony settles over same-sex dating

Are you serious?? We have tons of laws telling businesses how they must run. To use your example, McDonald's, et al, have to make nutrition information available to their customers. Doesn't matter if McDonald's doesn't want to.

I kind of agree with the dismay expressed about the decision... I did not know about the atheist/agnostic thing - that's an eye-opener. In light of that, it seems to me that they may have had two options: 1)Settle like they did or 2)Own up to the fact that they have a "Christian" (please note the quotes) agenda. I'm left wondering why they would want to keep that under wraps - hiding your Christian beliefs is usually considered contrary to being a Christian anyway, and it may have left a window open for them under "freedom of religion" to operate as they see fit.

Google tells the world how to talk

Peyton

One thing I've noticed

watching British television shows is that, the more educated and/or aristocratic a character is, the less my American ears can hear their "accent". So.... if the search is having trouble understanding some residents of the scepter'd isle.... it could be an indication of a certain lack of... hmm.... I'll just leave it at that ;)

Voice recognition tech has come a long way, but it's still only useful, imo, in areas where you can target a small subset of words - like support line IVRs... I'm also left wondering how well this thing copes with the various North American accents. I've known Yankees (i.e., those above the Mason-Dixie line, not "yanks") that have trouble understanding a thick southern accent. I've had trouble myself understanding creole accents.
