Re: ...
As if there was not enough reasons to slap more embargoes on NK LOL
At first headlines it seemed a slam dunk it was NK but when you look at how it unfolded may not.

So what is the erase cycle I see that this is never talked about lately but it is the prime ware on a SSD. Yes I know about leveling but really number of erase cycles is still an important point. Also a lot of small writes is a lot harder on the erase cycle then lots of big writes. If you change a single bit the block has to be swapped out and erased. So clams of 20 gig per day for 5 years life may not mean much if you simply change 1 bit on one sector as fast as you can. I suspect early failure
"And you write stuff that either panders to their ego, or about god or something. Something that they can play to their rich pals and won't upset the bishop."
And exactly what do you think Record companies are?? Rich patrons that pay musicians to play what they want to sell. The more things change the more they stay the same.
Same type of problem in Windows (Yes Windows goes tits up too) means a reinstall. You can repair Linux problems far easier then you can the equivalent Windows problem.
The biggest problem is doing the initial install. Since you may need to find drivers or configurations for your particular hardware. Note also you got the same problem on a OEM Windows install. People don't see this because 99% get Windows pre-installed or an image disk from their computer maker.
I help out on the openSUSE forum and in the fast number of cases everyone is treated with respect. The exception is when some one simply does not want help and simply wants to vent. Note respect goes both ways.
The interesting thing is that this happened in day light on the street there are other witnesses and the authorities have not even talked to them yet 5 days after the incident. So the only story the establishment has heard is the officers. I call bullshit
It is all about the hardware. Many machines that run XP just fine won't run 7 and above. I have a nice IBM Celaron 512 meg machine, perfectly fine hardware. No way you can install 7 on less then 1 gig and expect it to work and totally forget 8 for the same and so many other reasons. So I'd have to buy new hardware just to run something I really don't want. Maybe put Puppy on it :)
I run openSUSE on my main machine with XP in a Virtual Box using 512meg. That is about the max I want to take from the host. I only have 2 gig on that machine so to go to 7 I'd have to drop at least a gig if not 2 into that machine. Since all the mem slots are taken that means totally new RAM.
It is all about the hardware
Since from the point of view of a photon there is zero distance between objects and the universe has stopped. It shows that relativity like quantum mechanics just is a limit to what us electromagnetic beings can measure. Yes think about it everything we know is from electromagnetic fields. Bang you hand on a table that is the result of electrons repelling one another.
Relativity is based on the fact that we must use electromagnetic things to measure the universe and are thus restricted to the speed of light which cause distortions in our measurements. Like quantum mechanics is limited because we can not measure things exactly because we change what we measure by measuring it. So both are more a statement of our ability to measure the world then the true nature of the world.
At least on openSUSE UEFI on most machines works fine even in most cases with secure boot. But unfortunately the Hardware people have not uniformly used standard UEFI specs. So It can be difficult on some hardware. But then again it can be hard to install Windows 7 on them also and Win 7 does not support secure boot.
BTW it is Linux not Linus
Linux is COMMUNITY supported. If you are part of the community you need to report problems a way to payback the free software you got. Even if you are not a coder or power user. reporting things helps all and is little cost to you.
If you have done several version upgrades with the same configuration files often wiping the configs will fix thing. Yes config file structures do change over time and an upgrade may miss the odd setup you have.
Looks like it is the making of a good file system. But there are some caveats . As shipped the snapshot feature is on so backup snaps are taken hourly. Thus you need to allow extra space. how much is still a question, and depends on you usage, but you should allow at least 2X the space you plan to use to be safe. Snapshots can be turned off and there are other adjustment that can be made but it is on by default. Also the space used does not yet show up in the standard Linux tools so you can be surprised to run out of space when the normal tools show plenty.
Just a word of warning
Ir comes with Libra Office which should handle most legacy MS Office docs. You maybe able to run older versions of MSOffice in wine and there is always VirtualBox to run Windows if you really need it.
Pros are that you are free of lock in openSUSE the full OS stack is open source. It is not a huge deal to move to Ubuntu or any other Linux disto if you want to. It is much easier to maintain then Windows and you really don't need to worry much about malware unless you deliberately install it. KDE has so many bells and whistles you can activate you can get carried away with eye candy
Cons are that Linux is not Windows so you will have to learn some stuff. But the basic KDE desktop will be vary familiar. Also Linux file system are not Windows file systems. you have to lurn about partition and mounting not drives and drive letters. Some hardware may have a difficult time with the install and initial set up but the openSUSE forms are great to solve problems
That is the problem when you build the wolds biggest spy machine.
For the most part I think the people who are building this monster have good intentions. The problem is what happens when these people are no longer in charge 10 or 20 years down the road. No matter how many rules you layer on the fact is people will misuse this toy and the people in power will see it as a way to stay in power. Hello Big Brother
Since Baen signed on with Amazon the ebook price on Baen's site went up about 30% ($6.99-$9.99). I guess to bring into line with the price charged by Amazon. Really the cost of an ebook to the publisher is next to zero. Just editing cost + author payment+ some small amount for IT and Network. No dead tree price involved.
Would you like to eat your words???
The Dawson College computer science student who was expelled after discovering a security breach in a system used by students across Quebec has been offered a scholarship by the company behind the software.
"We will offer him a scholarship so he can finish his diploma in the private sector," said Edouard Taza, the president of Skytech.
