Sony Ericsson to drop M2 for Micro SD

Thumb Up

About time too!

It's about time Sony stopped plagueing the planet with their proprietary formats that serve soley to rip off consumers through outragous licensing fees and 'clever' software. Betamax, Mini-disc, memory stick, UMD/PSP disks, Blu-Ray (and CDs with rootkits). When will they understand that we are all better served by everyone using the same stuff without all the copy protection, region encoding, DRMing and all manner of other crap designed to frustrate fair use.

Pirate Bay rejects law-breaking claims

@Anonymous AHole

" It's just as well this is a beyond-reasonable-doubt criminal case, because in a balance-of-probabilities civil case, refusing to refute the claim would leave them wide open.

Do any legal eagles out there know whether this lack of denial would be usable in a civil suit by an individual copyright holder?

May the Pirate Bay become a graveyard of wrecked hulks.

Down with the Pirate Bay."

Look Anonymous Asshole, it's very easy. The Pirate Bay is one of the reasons that ITunes now sells high bitrate non-DRM tracks for a reasonable price, because when the music industry was screwing everyone, everyone went to file sharing sites. When the movie industry realises that they could make more money by charging a fair price the Pirate Bay will be doing a lot less business and everyone will benefit. If copyright holders rights had always been the upheld as they would like them to have been, there would have been no public libraries, no magnetic media, no MP3s, no TIVOs and no doubt a lot of other stuff that short sighted self righteous people like yourself take for granted.

Long Live The Pirate Bay.

Piracy will get everyone cheap movie and music downloads

Limewire and the Pirate Bay have forced ITunes to give everyone DRM free music downloads at a good bitrate with a price that is becoming sensible, it will also do this for movies. When the assholes that run that industry work out that if you can get a new movie rental every night from Lovefilm on DVD for £1 , it should be possible to do the same with a download that doesn't involve physical media or postage costs.

If we had listened to the music industry, compact cassette, the recordable CD and MP3 players would never have happened. The music industry would prefer to sell warped vinyl that autoscratches after the first play just like they always did make you buy the same thing over and over again and, in the UK, make you buy it for twice the price anyone else is paying.

It is the Pirate Bay that are the solution here. If the industry started pricing sensibly they could be making £1 per movie off of anyone who would ever be likely to pay every time they wanted to watch a movie and maybe 50p for a new single or maybe £3-£4 for a freshly released album.

Why are they too stupid to see it?

Paris, because she's had one of her movies downloaded free by a lot of Pirate Bay users.

LG updates netbook with on-board HSDPA

Availability how?

Did they also say whether it could be bought in the UK without a contract from a normal retailer as opposed to strictly from mobile phone companies?

the contract is the rip off....

I only need a little light surfing away from home and webmail access which is denied to me in the office. I use less than 1GB per month and this only costs £198 for 2 years worth if you get 2 of the £99 12GB/12 month 3Mobile packages which means that for the rice of this 'deal' from Phones 4U is only about £220 more expensive than it should be. What a rip off.

......Linux netbooks are fine for your grandma who wants an internet appliance and for nerds that want to travel back to the 1983 with the sudo apt get command line interface time machine and mess around there all day trying to find something that could be discovered installed and running within 3 minutes on an XP machine. For everyone else they're cr@p.

The netbook newbie's guide to Linux

Jase
Unhappy

....This is not what a netbook noobie wants....

I bought my first PC 20 years ago and was a happy DOS user, then Windows came along and now, I use XP on all my machines at home and the wife has a Macbook. I bought an EEE 901 Xandros, not because I wanted to learn Linux, but because I want a little book sized thing for travel and for use at work through 3G as we are locked down in the office. I don't want to be faffing about with constant security updates or cleaning crap off of it or shelling out for yet another copy of NAV or bending over to pay for another copy of MS Orifice or using a 'borrowed' copy that MS uses as an excuse to interogate my PC whenever an update is required. In short I want a turn it on - turn it off thing for browsing, skype and a little light document editing when I'm away from home. The list of stuff that the 901 doesn't appear to have (or it may just be me) that I actually want on it is very small: An app for unrarring spanned rar files, a bit torrent client and drivers for a 3G modem other than the now discontinued Huawei E-220. Now even the 3G bit is unnecessary as I stupidly bought my 901 just before the 901 HSUPA thing was announced and quickly returned it so I can get the new one without worrying about 3G drivers and having a dongle sticking out the side. So the moment someone in the UK actually starts selling the new one I'll have that. I just want to be able to find/install a couple of little apps.

When I was 21 I lived in the states and I bought an old Chevy Impala I'd do all the routine maintenance, change the oil, set the points with a dwell guage, fix whatever broke myself etc etc. 21 years later I know that somewhere underneath my car there is a sump plug but I don't give two cans of cold wee where it is as I just want to drive the thing. It's the same with a netbook. If Linux is ever going to break the MS hegemony, someone that wants to install a couple of little apps shouldn't have to fart around with command line interfaces and spend years nerding about developing an intimate understanding of the unique geekperating system installed on each PC.

So, the beginners guide should be a beginners guide to Linux netbooks, not a beginners guide to the Linux CLI. Explain the file system rudiments, how to get to the advanced GUI, how to install an app. And, for those of you telling everyone that they should install Ubumtoo and ridiculing the less knowledgable, ask yourselves how you'd feel if the petrolhead next door told you you had to remap the ignition advanced curves on your Mondeo so you could fit a child seat in the back.

Asus Eee PC 901 to gain HSUPA, HSDPA next month

Was this just teasing?

10 days in to October and there has been no news of who will sell it in the UK, pricing, contract provider or anything.

right upgrades wrong price

At 220ish the 701 was just so right. Right size, right price, only the screen could have been better and at that sort of price worth buying even if you already have a laptop. So now they have fixed the screen but pretty much torched the whole point of buying one, I just had a look on ebuyer to see what I could get for 320-340, it is up against some very serious competition that will realistically outperform it in every way and it loses that 'so cheap I must get one' factor.

Stop

I'm waiting until I can buy an HD-DVD recorder for my PC...

The format war won't be won until the RW optical drives are being installed in people's PCs. It won't be won by Sony as they will cripple the crap out of the drives preventing anyone from recording a movie on them or some other nonsense, in the same way that they hobbled Minidisc recorders in PCs.
