Mobile network hack reveals sensitive cellphone data

Sordid Details
WTF?

Well I never

So surely the key (as with all such systems) is to ensure that such service critical platforms are not exposed to the world at large. However I'm still not clear how the researchers are able to derive the name of the cellphone user. You'd need to get to the billing/CMS system before you get that level of detail.

Apple rumored to put beefy iPad on diet

Jobs Halo

Too much choice!!!

Aaargh, my head hurts!!. I just don't know which device to hold out for. Big iPad? Small iPad. What about my iPhone? And if there's an upgrade for that in the summer too...

Oh wait, I know what to do...I'm going to buy them all. Thankfully my MobileMe account will keep them all in sync.

Thank you Steve. I love you. Please, have the rest of my disposable income as a token of my adoration.

Segway + motorbike = futuristic dorkmobile

ALERT: this post contains pendantry

You don't steer a motorcycle by leaning off it. A motorcycle is steered by rider pressure on the handlebars (known as countering steering) causes the bike to lean due to the precessional forces at work on the front wheel.

After the Segway it was only a matter of time before some genius decided that even standing up was too much effort. Good name though. Taurus, bull...apt.

Security defaults

Regional networks wouldn't have been so bad if joining one hadn't screwed up your privacy settings. If you locked everything down to friends and then joined a network, everything reverted to Friends & Networks meaning a million (or more) people could see every little detail of your life without telling you. This is something my ex-girlfriend failed to appreciate while I continued to stalk her unseen.

iPhone upgrades - a one-way control-freak street

Time Machine?

Being a scaredy-cat and not wanting to muck up my lovely new iPhone 3GS I've not tried this myself, but I'm wondering if Time Machine would help here? If you can roll back any file or folder to a snapshot at a previous point in time, if an App Store upgrade fails then could you restore your iTunes library to the state it was in before the update? Or would the newer version on the iPhone overwrite the older restored version at the next sync? Because as we know, Apple always recommends that iPhone customers keep current with software updates for the best user experience...

Arkansas cop tasers 10-year-old girl

Everyone looks pathetic

A parent who has to call the cops to deal with a child's tantrum...a cop who can't restrain a ten year-old girl without electrocuting her...everyone in this story should have FAIL tattooed across their foreheads.

On the other hand, the cop has only administered what the parent(s) should have done a long time ago...a bloody good hiding. I bet good ol' mom only has to lift the phone off the hook and the kid is washed and in pyjamas before the receiver has reached her ear...

No smoke without fire?

I drive kids around from time to time, for school, church, and my son's Cub Scout group (yes, I've been CRB checked for all three) so I guess I'd be required to register with this. I'm not going to do it on principle. Too bad for the kids, but I do think the people who are directly affected by this draconian backdoor Stalinism need to stand up to this spineless government and say 'Enough'.

My worry is that if I say 'no' then people will think I have something to hide. That will get recorded as 'soft information' and I'll probably end up on the database anyway - negatively not positively.

I'd laugh, but it's gone beyond being a joke now.

Social networking big boys must bow to EU data laws

Fair enough, but...

iPhone 3.0 - born on schedule...

Sordid Details
Unhappy

As a fanboi...I'm unimpressed

@fluffy: I got lots of 'unknown errors' when I did my upgrade. It kept failing when trying to connect to iTunes so I assumed it was down to server load. But then I ejected the phone, closed and re-opened iTunes and then reconnected the phone...and it re-activated first time, so try that.

@Matt 40: There's no pictures icon in the camera app because it now displays a thumbnail of the last photo you took. Take a random snap and you'll see.

MMS still doesn't seem to work properly. I still have a random snap waiting to be sent. Rummaging through the settings I see that O2 have changed the APN name for all the iPhone services. It used to be 'mobile.o2.co.uk' but now there are multiple APNs (for data, MMS and visual voicemail) and they are all set to 'idata.o2.co.uk'. Now I wonder why O2 would want to separate/differentiate iPhone traffic in this way...

All in all...I'm not impressed. The extra features just don't really do it for me although I'm cried for want of cut-and-paste in the past so I'm sure that will come in useful. But Safari is now slower and clunkier, even typing text into an input box is laggier than it used to be.

There's no revert option that I can find. And we call it progress.
