Chip start-up could ignite Blade PCs

Jack Pastor

..and what data center has room for all the PCs back there ?

It's hard enough to cool an power a half a rack of SERVERS let alone put all the corporate desktops back there UNLESS you virtualize, and I don't see that here to the extent that you can already get VDI solutions from major vendors like HP and IBM.

Maybe if they put the chip on an easy-to-integrate ASIC they could sell it to the tier 1's who could combine it with VMware.

I don;t know too many data center managers who have the port density to run that much more Ethernet without virtualizing that as well. HP already has with their blades.

Opteron hero Newisys goes titsup

Jack Pastor

Sanmina selling off ??

Sanmina was a major investor in Fabric7.

I understand there was some pressure for them (Fabric7) to use Newisys designs. I wonder what happens to the Horus chipset ??? Anyway, it is interesting what they are divesting .....

IBM, HP dominate server market

Jack Pastor

Mainframes used to just be called COMPUTERS !!

Some of us still remember a time before the PDP-8. When MINIcomputers arrived, mainframes then became known as MAINFRAMES to distinguish themselves from their smaller, departmental brethren.

When MICROcomputers arrrived, there was an 8-bit/ 16-bit / 32-bit breakdown, but nothing was called a SERVER until the early 80's and the early networking involved user PCs which became called CLIENTS in the early CLIENT-SERVER architectures. Prior to this period, TERMINALS talked to the computer, and there was no concept of a "client."

This is when APPLICATIONS began running on SERVERS (where previously they just did file and print duty.) Netware ran code as "loadable modules" but it was NT that really sealed the deal.

This well predates the ISeries and pSeries, and Zseries.

Servers, anyone ??

Excuse me ?? This is the SERVER market !!! How many people buy Apple SERVERS ??

Interesting that HP seems to SHIP more and IBM has greater revenue. I guess IBM charges more for their servers. Then again, I guess they call mainframes servers these days as well.

I'd sure like to see this broken out by platform.

HP marries Cisco's Infiniband switches with clusters and blades

Jack Pastor

Infiniband is not just for Virtualization

This can make on HELL of an Oracle 10g platform, especially for larger clusters.

Sun to do Xeon and Niagara blade thing next month

Jack Pastor

Open design?

What constitutes an "open design" in Sun's view ?? ... the ability to run "open" Solaris ??

And as for Dell releasing a Blade product "comparable" to HP's C-class... well.... a Ford Fusion is COMPARABLE to a Porshe.

It just doesn't compare very FAVORABLY <g>.

Tier 1 support for Virtualization

<< Parker, however, seems to mean that no Tier 1 server seller has tied virtualization to servers in the mysterious manner that Dell plans.>>

Aside from doing some REAL ENGINEERING work (I DOUBT it) there is not much Dell can likely add to the Virtualization mix that has not already been done..

I believe HP has a whole suite of software to support VMware, MS Virtual Server and even Xen :

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantessentials/valuepack/vms/index.html

I'm sure IBM touts something similar. Sun will of course steer you toward "containers" on Solaris.

Maybe Dell should wait until THEY enter the realm of Tier 1 server vendors before they make such statements.....

Americans vs, the American Government

Please don't blame this travesty of justice on the American people..... and in return, we won't blame you Brits for keeping Harry out of Iraq while our sons and daughters from both sides of the pond continue to be slaughtered by insurgents in a country we both should not have invaded.

The U.S. has not cornered the market on "Special Treatment" for celebrities and the ultra-wealthy.

Printers and PCs power HP's second quarter

The Anti-Carly strikes !

For Hurd's a jolly good fellow !! Investors should thank all the hardworking engineers, heads-down sales force and overworked factory grunts for putting the substance behind the numbers.

Cost-cutting, while good for the bottom line, doesn't bring in revenue.

Vista – End of the Dream?

Jack Pastor

It's not Vista .... It's the rest of the world ...

I was very happy with VISTA. I was not pleased to have to buy a new sound card to replace my (relatively)new Audigy 2 as well as my Logitech Cam.

I was VERY displeased that my HP Laserjet 1012 was not supported (without orthodontics)and that my Pinnacle Video editing release was at best EXPERIMENTAL etc. etc. etc.

I rolled back to XP, and the only think I really miss is using the 2GB Flash memory drive to cache my program starts.

Overall, I don't see a compelling reason to switch

until the AT LEAST the Big Players in the Hardware world do ....

CEO Dell: We're losing our religion

Jack Pastor

Same old Story

Dell had quietly been in the Channels for years. Compaq salespeople used to fume, seeing stacks of Dell boxes in reseller warehouses where fresh custom images has just been applied and 3rd party add-ins installed.

And they've been chattering on for YEARS that they will bring the "Dell Effect" to the Services biz.

Hey Dell !! Ya can't do that with slave-wage dumb-ass college grad employees. Experienced people won't take a job with a quarterly probation.

Why not stick to what got you where you were in the first place. Sell mediocre boxes cheap, and replace them right away when a customer has a problem.

You ain't in the league with HP, IBM or even Sun !! Why not just roll in tour own mud, and enjoy it??

HP: 'IT, as we know it, is over'

So is ITIL now BTIL ??

Geez - They'll wreak havoc on the acronym users....

Hitachi woos mid-sized Americans with new blade

Jack Pastor

Do the math.. then RECALCULATE

<Should those sockets be filled with Intel's quad-core Xeon chip, then you're talking bout 80 cores per chassis and 560 cores per standard 42U rack.>>

NOBODY can fill a 42U rack with ANY kind of blades without some serious refrigeration orthodontia ...

Arithmetic is great, but the laws of thermodynamics is greater. density doesn't mean SQUAT if ya can't cool it, and bro' NOBODY can cool that much CPU in that dense a space, even with ICE WATER forced through the rack.

Theory is swell, reality sucks .....

Citrix goes whole hog with virtual Windows

Jack Pastor

Blade PC's ???

I just wanted to make a distinction between the term "Blade PCs" and traditional Blade "Servers."

Most vendors view "Blade PC's" as a 1-1 CPU / User where the box is hidden in the data center rack, but the desktop delivered to the users' Thin Client is his/her own.

Citrix traditionally resides on "REAL" servers in the back room, where a one-to-many model leverages the power of the server (as well as HA features like RAID etc.) It is also designed for "over-subscription" assuming SOMEBODY will be out sick, so you don't need a Client License for every employee/user.

Combine Virtualization with the ridiculous compute power of modern CPU and X64 architecture in general, and you have noting but culture/inertia/licensing disrupting the status quo.
