I have downloaded the BECTA report and made a PDF of the press release for my son to give to his IT head of department. My son's first PC, six years ago, was a dual-boot with W98 & Suse 7.2 and he has been quite at home with XP, Red Hat, Debian and Kubuntu, since then; but Vista leaves him cold. We acquired it on an insurance replacement for an XP laptop that had a short flying lesson. He currently is wrestling with asking me to convert the new machine to Kubuntu, because he may have to give up some games that may yet not run on Wine ... but if Vista continues to misbehave, I can see him saying "stuff the gaming". He started on Star Office, now uses Open Office, GIMP, Blender and others. Just before Christmas, his IT teacher was bemoaning the cost of licences for upgrades of Photoshop ... my son demonstrated the GIMP on his laptop, which he had with him; adding that all his homework for several years, had been done on such software. Apparently, the teacher's expression, when told that the GIMP was open source, was one of utterly gobsmacked. It's not just MS products that cost, in schools. I will await the reaction after the BECTA report is passed on, tomorrow. This could be fun ... !
BTW, the six-yr-old PC now has Kubuntu 7.10 ... and I am writing this on it. Try that with Vista? I think not.
