French pass 'three strikes' file-sharing law

Hmm, not quite sure

On the one hand I believe that large scale piracy is a bad thing rather than a good thing I also believe laws like this will always be used to the advantage of fat cats only (see RIAA).

Generally while this does worry me if it cuts down on the amount of people ripping hard working musicians off then I'm all for it (I'm anti fat cat recording company/publishing house but pro-artist, whether it be actor, director, musician or whatever).

What does make me chuckle is that this is the final vote for a relatively important law and no-one turns up. How French is that? Nice.

Legal, major label DRM-free MP3s hit UK (at last)

But I want all 4!

Great news (I wonder if this will effect my ipoints), but now we need all 4 major labels, as alot of what i'm after isn't on EMI!

1 step in the right direction. We still need Amazon in the UK though (unless play.com get all 4 1st). I emailed them, all i got back was a 'thanks for your suggestion'. grrrr...

Healthy? You're a burden on the state

Fat Tax!

Tax anyone with a waist line over 40"! Bring in the fat tax so those bastards can contribute too!

I hasten to add I'm joking. Personally I think people who go to the hospital anytime anything seems slightly abnormal (eg, chesty cough, slight sniff) cost the NHS more than obese people.

Veggies a 'perversion of nature': Official

Brilliant, brilliant

One of the best articles I've read (not including the death of DRM) in a long time.

Video game ad banned for 'realistic' violence

wow, stupidity reaches new levels!

Maybe only after 9pm, but the advert is harmless so I really don't see the problem at all. So watching this is bad but watching Face Off, Rambo and movie's like the M:I series are alright?

I hate political correctness, its up there with DRM in the stupidity league.

The Dark Knight - 2008's biggest movie?

Well said

"For the record, this hack would rather chop off his own arm with a can-opener than sit through a couple of hours of Sex & The City, which inexplicably features at 16."

@ Stu

'Physically the medium is superior, and over time the software issues will disappear (and are actually non existent for me and other PS3 and PC owners) , it will still remain a higher capacity storage medium than HD-DVD.'

Well said that man, well said. Video was brilliant as well.

Clarkson's 'steal my ID' stunt backfires

Good move

Clarkson is normally good for news. I like him but this was a fantastic move on whoever did it's part.

I'm glad to see he learnt his lesson, rather than just thinking it was an outrage. What I really want to know is how much he got back, considering its a charity it would be quite interesting.

Sony BMG to drop Custer stance on DRM

Ah, my days keeps getting better

First Clarkson, then the death of HD DVD, now this. Major thanks to El Reg for making my day! :-D

This is brilliant news. DRM was a REALLY stupid idea and I'm glad to see people are starting to see it.

Personally a good way of doing things for me would be to be able to freely download 3 or 4 songs off an album and if you like them, then you buy the album. I realise that this kills the single market, but I think it would boost the album market and have a positive effect on the music market as a whole.

Still, this is no doubt a good thing.

Apple targeted in DRM monopoly suit (again)

kieran
Dead Vulture

Gotta feel sorry...

for Apple, they're getting it from all sides now. DRM is a really dumb technology driven by Record Labels, NOT Artists. I buys music made by musicians. Not record labels.

Anyway, back on topic. Apple clearly are trying to be the Microsoft of the digital music world, and have done very well for themselves in the process. While you can't please all the people all the time they have made some dumb/greedy moves.

I need to read the article referanced as the one were Jobs calls for an end to DRM. He may just get my vote with a line like that.

Btw, DRM-Crippled is absolutly brilliant. Best use of a hyphen. ever.

Now RIAA says copying your own CDs is illegal

kieran
Thumb Down

This is just sick

I make personal backup's of all my music on my PC and by burning onto other CD's, so I never truely lose an album and so my car doesn't chew up the original. So according to these idiots what I'm doing is illegal.

I've followed and disagreed with what they are doing for a while. I think it is perfectly acceptable for people to download for free 2 or 3 songs from an album, no more, anymore and you can buy the album, or listen to a friends copy.

Sick, this is sick.
