Scared yet, web devs? Google smears malware warnings over PHP.net

Re: Three hops

Google blocking ads by default? Nope don't think we'll be seeing that anytime soon.

Scramjet X-51 finally goes to HYPER SPEED above Pacific

Sulehir

Re: @Sulehir

True, I was thinking of the scramjet more for a high speed change of trajectory, for targets that you want to hit at just a bit of an angle and fine grain aiming.

Sulehir
Mushroom

Since a lot of people are pointing out how this wouldn't work in practice. How about...

A missile rack embedded in a satellite with re-entry shields on the missiles. Need a boom? drop one from orbit then once speed passes mach 3 or 4 from the force of gravity ignite the scramjet.

Just a thought.

Am I the only one wondering why this is episode 3?

I can't see an episode 2 in the archives and don't remember seeing one recently?

Android malware victims offered free WinPhones by MS

Stop

Why is everyone taking this so seriously? Its a bit of tongue in cheek marketing hype. Chill out.

Disclaimer: I currently use a windows phone and I like it, my last phone was an android and for the most part I liked that too. I switched for the simple reason that as a developer who uses visual studio it was nice to have a phone I could write apps for without learning a new language.

Microsoft has done quite a few unpleasant and shady things over the years, but on the other hand so have google, apple and infact just about any other large company you could name.

I doubt a voice of reason will go down well in a heated environment like this but I have thick skin so feel free to flame on.

Survey scams exploit Winehouse's death, Oslo massacre

RE: "News angle?..."

I disagree. I already know about the bombing shooting and celebrity death from dozens of sources and it has no major relevance on a tech site. A heads up that the scammers are already using this vector on the other hand lets me keep my less tech savvy friends and family from doing something stupid.

Met chief fears Brit cybercrime gangs

Sulehir
Stop

Really?

"PCeU regularly receives calls from other Met units informing them that criminal gangs are using cyber communication to plan their crimes and launder the proceeds."

So what? Emailing each other and using online banking I presume? Or maybe they have gone really high tech and are 'cyber' communicating using MSN messenger.

Societies priority in this case was finding three missing people. The nakedness was just a interesting aside. Or did I misread the article?

@Chronos

Normally I don't comment or respond to comments on here (fanning the flames is too risky) but Chronos has asked a reasonable question and I thought I would put forward my thoughts on the answer.

"Why"

I use both Windows and Linux at home, but try to convince many of my family and friends to use linux, specifically Ubuntu. I do this not from any interest in market shares and what-not but because of that simplest of Human motives, laziness.

Generally when something goes wrong I get called and bugged to fix it, and from my experience if I have convinced them to use linux I sacrifice a short time setting it up and showing them around and then get bugged a lot less than if they are using windows.

I happily agree that linux isn't for everyone, but getting it onto mass produced machines from Dell et al would make my life easier because then my older relatives would have heard about it and be less scared of the geekery.

These are just my thoughts but maybe you will find them at least a partial answer to your question.

Am I missing something? My reading of Googles response seemed to be just confirming what others had suggested, giving an official stamp of approval as it were. I expect a fair few people appreciated having confirmation rather than best guesses.

An interesting possibility, maybe O2 is setting itself up to be "The operator who is against the war" A shining beacon of ethical behaviour in a mire of violent warmongering depravity.

Or maybe they are just greedy.

Clay minerals point to vast Martian lakes

Sulehir

@AC

The water presumably came from the combustion of hydrogen in an oxygenated environment. As for where it has gone, that is what the NASA types are trying to figure out, current theories mainly focus on the water either having reacted with various minerals and being 'locked' into the rock or vast underground ice reserves (which would probably be centered around the poles).

Alternative theory to humour creationists: Sky fairy giveth and sky fairy taketh away.

Penguin - 'cause they are the secret rulers of the martian ice.

Who will be the next Doctor?

Quick thought.

In the Library episodes, the woman (can't remember her name) said she recognised the Docter (ni his current form) and had spent a lot of time with him, since that hasnt happened yet...

It's truly a nice change to see a (mainly) unbiased evaluation. Everything else you seem to see is either greenpeace orientated "we'll build a few more windmills and everyone will have enough electricity" or just a big "trust us and maintain the status quo" from big business and government.

With so many ridiculous new "anti-terror" laws, it is nice to see someone taking a stand (even if the actual choice of protest wasn't the best) I say that this weekend everyone should take a glass of vodka and toast this visionary.
