Fancy nipping for a quick two-thirds of a pint?

Stewart Haywood

@North of the border

There used to be a Scottish Pint that was actually 3 imperial pints. So, in Scotland, I assume the new measure would actually be 2 imperial pints.

I wonder if they have thought of 2 feet of ale instead of a yard of ale. Here in the US, sandwiches (of the sub variety) are sold by the foot. They always cut the ends of the loaf off, I wonder if the bread is made in bakers feet, a bakers foot being 13 inches.

Nice holiday destination

If I were to return to the Uk for a visit, I would not want to be blown up by a terrorist. But I also would not want to be shot by the police as I got on a train (not living in Blighty, I have developed a bit of a tan which could be a problem). I wouldn't want to be thrown inside for a month for taking a photo of Big Ben either. If I got to feeling ill, I wouldn't want to be tazered for being sick and old on a bus. My daughter points out that she, as a US citizen, has a US passport and would not want me arrested for child trafficing if we went anywhere near the Channel Tunnel. I would like to go to the pub but my wife tells me that I am 9135 times more likely to be stabbed outside a pub than blown up by a terrorist.

I think that I will just stay where I am and let Jacqui Jill and Buff the magic wanker wrap you all up in a blast proof database to protect your rights to a free 28 day full board holiday with a bunch of knife crime experts and including a fee introductory tazering.

Sorry, couldn't resist it.

Now, if you were GCHQ and you had just really cracked the problem of monitoring all the VoIP traffic would you send up a cheer, let Jacqui know and have a party. I would have a bit of an off the record moan to The Times about how difficult it all is and how we are loosing. Then I would get Jacqui all fired up about a huge database that will never be financed before she gets the boot* as an MP, and how we need it to overcome our VoIP problem. Spreading this sort of disinformation should set the terrorists of using VoIP for all their calls home to Osama and we listen to the lot.

Laptops to blame for Qantas jet plunge?

Stewart Haywood

The problem with electronics.....

inside an aircraft is not one with individual devices, but the effects of multiple devices. Every bit of electronics has at least one clock producing a comb of harmonics that get radiated, data busses radiate, small wireless devices radiate, displays radiate etc etc. It is when the overall power of the noise radiated from everything in the plane is high that we may get a problem ("may" being a very important word). Cell phones are rather bad because they will be transmitting on high power being inside a metal box. So, you get 300 people in there and they all fire up cell phones you can bet on about 300watts of noise.

Stories of people flying the aircraft around the sky by clicking a wireless mouse are just nonsense.

Spectrum Bridge solves the white space problem

Stewart Haywood
Boffin

I don't think that they have thought too hard

I would rent chunks of spectrum by width, frequency, time, geography and code. Then I could let the same chunk of spectrum to multiple users at the same time in the same location using different codes. Al I have to do is to offer max noise levels as a quality indicator. I can even let chunks of spectrum of different widths that overlap. Use frequency hopping and time slot hopping and I could cram even more users in there.

Apple 2G iPod Touch

Stewart Haywood

I won an iPod Touch!

The audio quality is not as good as other, similar machines. If I had paid for the thing I would be upset to be told that I had to spend more money on ear buds if I wanted reasonable quality.

To be honest, the thing is a bit heavy if what you want is a portable record player. I know I can look at the album cover while the music is playing but, I don't do that sat at home with the original CD, why should I want to do it anywhere else?

Ok, it plays some games and has a web browser. I understand that some people like this idea. Personaly, I don't care, I don't play games and I don't want to browse the web on something so small and inconvenient. I have a palmtop but just run GPS software on it because I hate trying to browse the web on a small screen

What I would like to be able to do is to download photo's from my camera, or it's memory card/stick/module, to store them and view them on a screen that is a reasonable size for a mobile photo viewer. It doesn't do that, what a shame. For a lot of reasons, it would be good to be able to connect USB devices and read memory cards.

Why put it in a shiney tin box? I don't see what is wrong with a soft rubber one that will stand up to being in my pocket with a bunch of keys without looking like it has been subjected to a terrorist attack. The reason that it would have to co-exist with a bunch of keys is that it is so heavy that if I put it in my shirt pocket it would rip the pocket off.

I don't like it.

Labour minister says 14 year olds should get ID cards

Stewart Haywood
Flame

This is disgraceful.

"she boasted that the Tories and LibDems would find it impossible to unpick the government’s ID card scheme"

The only way that this would be possible would be to make it impossible to have any dealings with national or local government without the production of an ID card. So, for instance, no ID card and you cannot renew the tax disc on your car, no tax disk you get fined but cannot pay the fine without an ID card, no fine paid you get arrested and cannot get bail without and ID card etc etc. No ID card, cannot go to school, don't go to school and parents get arrested. Parents don't have ID cards they don't get bail, etc etc. Use ID card numbers to replace NHS numbers so that you will need to produce an ID card to get treatment from a doctor. Use the ID card number to pay income tax, get unemployment benefit etc.

Get that lot implemented and it won't matter if it works or not, it will be near impossible to go back. To do this when you are certain that you will not win the next ellection is disgraceful, it is just like crapping in the punch bowl because you are not invited to the next party!

Marketing body condemns 'draconian' Olympic law

Stewart Haywood

SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES 2012 LONDON, GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE.

The measures are designed to combat 'ambush marketing', the practice of companies attempting to use a sporting or cultural event to achieve exposure for their brand or products without actually paying to sponsor the event.

I may be wrong but, I thought that every company, man woman and child in the UK was sponsoring the SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES of 2012 in LONDON including the production of every GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE medal, by paying taxes. If they are not allowed to use certain words, then they should ask for their money back.

Royal Society says goodbye to creationism row vicar

Stewart Haywood
Flame

Wot about the facts?

Reiss did not say that he supported creationism. He said that if it was brought up in a science class, teachers should know how to deal with it. There is nothing wrong with that. There are all sorts of urban legends out there that can be demonstrated to be wrong using science and there is nothing wrong with dealing with these in a science class (take a look sometime at Myth Busters on the TV).

Reiss' big sin was saying what he did whilst being ordained in the Church of England. The RS has admitted as much. If the RS gets rid of Reiss for being an ordained minister, then they must also look at how they might treat the scientific work of other ministers. As an example, let us take a look at Mendel (sometimes called the father of genetics). He was a priest. Let us then discredit him and remove all mention of his name from the RS. Copernicus was a Cannon in the Catholic church, oh dear. How about Lemaître, a catholic priest who proposed the theory that eventually became known as the Big Bang theory. Yup, best get rid of the lot, damned religious nuts!

Pope watched over by flying robots during Lourdes visit

Stewart Haywood
Flame

I have always wondered why....

the Pope needs security. There are many cases throughout history such as Daniel being thrown in the lion's den, his friends being chucked in the fiery furnace and so on. In all these cases, because they were good servants of God, God protected them. So what is the problem, does the Pope not believe that God can save him, or that he is not good enough to be saved? Either way, it is obviously good for science that the Pope places more faith in bullet proof plastic, robot planes and hellfire missiles than he does in God.

The icon reminds me of my final destination.

My wife is terrified.

We were thinking of returning to the UK for a vacation this year. My wife and I travel on British passports but our daughter travels on a US passport. My wife is terrified that our daughter will be taken from us and we will be arrested as perverts at Heathrow.

We all have digital cameras and my wife is terrified that we may be stopped by the police for using them in public and held for over a month for no reason.

My daughter is home schooled and her education continues while we are on vacation. My wife is terrified that some of the physics, chemistry and other texts that she reads may result in her arrest.

My wife's terror has been induced by HMG, this surely makes the government a bunch of terrorists. Much more interesting is the fact that the laws enacted by HMG are all signed by the Queen herself. Does this make the Queen a terrorist? I think it does, and would like to know when the DPP is going to do something about it.

Don't worry about the black helicopters, HMG can't work out how to test them yet.

I do hope that you do not react to stress when in the air by shouting, taking the name of your God, or maybe someone elses God, in vain and then threatening to take your toys home.

Just for the record, lift is the result of dirrecing air downwards. It's one of those action/reaction things. Just take a look at the downwash from a large aircraft. Bernouli is very good at explaining how a venturi works but not how a 747 wing works. The Coanda (I'm surprised that as an aerodynamics instructor you did not correct the spelling) effect is present, but only in a very thin boundary layer on the upper surface of a wing. The magnitude of the effect is very small. I know that you can do a demo under the kitchen faucet with a round glass, but what you see is a demonstration of the surface tension of water.

Stewart Haywood

Interesting

This statement is interesting, "Some councils using these surveillance methods against council tax dodgers and so forth had shown "serious misunderstanding of the concept of proportionality", and that oversight had been "poor" in some cases."

Surely the council needs to get a court order to Use "these surveillance methods." If this is the case, it must be the courts that have shown "serious misunderstanding of the concept of proportionality". Jaqui should be taking Sir Christopher's report to heart and ensuring that the courts are "re-educated".

US sees first airliner flight with laser defences

Stewart Haywood

El Al

I'm sure that El Al have been doing this for some time.

I don't think that they tracked the missile exhaust though.

I think the way that they did it was to basically flash a laser that was pointing backwards, at the same rate that the missile samples it's infra

red detectors. This would persuade the missile to turn of to one side, or up or down. Since the missile has a very short burn time it has no way to recover from it's "mistake".

I expect modern missiles use a much better tracking system that requires a very bright dazzle. Not the sort of thing to leave switched on all the time around airports.

False +ve not the only problem.

If there are false positives then there are also false negatives. I see no mention of these anywhere. Does this mean that the system is not beeing correctly checked and audited, or could it be that government IT is soooo good that they don't make this sort of mistake?

If we would only think of the children (sorry I had to say that), we would see two problems. There are people who have not been found out but are a danger. I assume that the police must have some idea of how many undetected crimes of a particular nature are out there. There must also be those who are a danger, have been found out but do not get detected by the system. So, let's see those numbers.
