questions..

quote: "all our activities are proportionate to the threats against which we seek to guard.."

just a couple of questions regarding the above quote, to make sure i understand this correctly:

- exactly what threats? terrorists? what else besides that non-existent enemy?

- whom exactly is under threat from within the populace? the people? or the government?

oh, and we've all seen what the government call 'proportionate'....

lesson

The clearest moral of this story is that admins should never, under any circumstances, ever tell anyone else their admin password. the real failure here was that one of their co-admins (presumably still working for that company) had given her their password. which is just crazy and stupid. and that individual should face disciplinary action.

Police want new remote hard drive search powers

Sillyfellow
Stop

search warrant please

as it stands i believe that a search warrant is required to 'access' anything on my property, and to get a search warrant, they need to show good reason. eliminates random and unethical fishing trips, and reduces the probability of 'evidence' being planted by the coppers just cos they don't like you...

now, if they change the law to make remote access and search of people's PCs legal, then imagine how easily they could access your computer and plant all sorts in there, and then arrest you for possessing that..

and what about encrypted stuff? is it that we could at any time get a visit out of the blue, by someone saying: you have encrypted files. hand over the keys or face a jail term.. ??.. and what about an encrypted file being planted, to which you don't even have the key? how do you defend against that?

no warrant, no probable cause, no way to prove or prevent false evidence being planted...

this just stinks and i can't help wondering how many innocent people will be jailed on false charges, just because they don't like gordon brown and his cronies.

choice

this could be ok if it was not mandatory. this way the parents and children can discuss and decide for themselves if this is a good thing for them or not.

many will not want yet more constant surveillance, which only spreads distrust and anxiety.

just because the subjects of said surveillance are minors does not mean this will be accepted, nor does it mean that the children will get used to this monitoring. nobody ever gets used to being constantly monitored.

Gov systems found on 1.9m zombie botnet

Sillyfellow

now it gets attention

yeah, so only now that govt systems got infected the police are suddenly interested in this type of thing.. typical ! especially considering that this botnet case is pretty much resolved already.

i'm confident that i'm not alone with story of police completely disinterested and apparently lacking manpower for such low priority e-crime.

my credit card details stoilen and very stupidly (you would think) used by crooks to pay congestion charge for their vehicle. of which we got the details and handed to police. it would have been a simple matter to get their details from their car registration from transaction details supplied, then go and arrest them. i certainly wanted to press charges.

but nope. police were far too busy with other matters to do their job, for which i pay over the top taxes for.

thank you for listening to my ranty complaint.

Police, Cameras, Inaction!

Sillyfellow

well,

all i can say is that this police state will not intimidate me into being scared of using my camera, video camera , and/or voice recorder in the event of anything out of the ordinary that happens to, or near me.

especially to keep recordings of any interactions with any 'officials/officers', since i understand that i am now required to prove my innocence to any offhand accusation. gone are the days of 'innocent until proven guilty'.

so you watch me weather i like it or not, and i will watch you weather you like it or not.

this news makes me madder than mad. what are these banks playing at? it's people's livelihood we are talking about here.

forget about "realising value" for investment ! so the gvt want to make a profit along with the banking fat cats now do they? does that mean we, the taxpayer who paid for all of this, will get a dividend? nope. of course not.

what did we give the that bank all that money for if all they're going to do is go-ahead and fire people anyways? to beef up their profitability? I THINK NOT.

UKBA to exchange fingerprints with US

Sillyfellow

also notice

how they talk about pushing UK ID cards harder and harder. bit by bit forcing everyone to have one (or they can't travel or renew documents, or perhaps buy alcohol.. etc etc.) so technically you may not be *required* to have an ID card just to be in this country (yet, unless you're a foreigner), but soon there will be too many things you cant do without one, thereby forcing you to have one anyway. dirty sneaky rotten untrustworthy government.

papers please citizen !

just because police and officials are (usually) polite, doesn't mean this is not a police state, because it is. i should know, i am originally from Zimbabwe under the thumb of mugabe. at this stage i would say that the UK is far worse when it comes to freedom and rights. because of the technology, equipment and number of tazer armed police. at least in zimbabwe they were/are open about their disgusting suppressive behaviour. over here they lie and lie and cheat and make up rules as they go along to try and trick people into thinking that what they are doing is acceptable behaviour. it is not.

just look at how the police actions in the run-up to, and during the demonstrations, were plainly to discourage any disgruntled people from attempting to be heard. and where not discouraged, then 'inconvenienced' (more like persecuted) as much as possible.

" "hows about the school and educational system just admit they made a mistake and apologise."

Because that would mean admitting culpability and opening the door to being sued."

sure, i know that. however, we're all human and make mistakes from time to time, and this does not make it ok to tell lies, for any reason, just because you don't want to face any concequences. thats what a cowardly liar does (and this includes corporations).

if we make a mistake we should admit it and face the concequences. this is the way of life.

the way it is 'normal' and accepted behaviour to tell lies apon lies these days just makes me very dissapointed at people's general lack of understanding (does not apply to everyone though, there are a few honest people out there).

..and it's also dishonest and greedy for the 'victim' in this case to sue for money. they too should accept that mistakes do happen, and get over it.

the uk government and main telecoms providers are at the moment illegally 'hacking' our every communication, call, website visited and who else knows what else... and they're even trying to make it legal for them to do this, and be allowed to hack into anyone's computer anytime they feel like it. and the good 'ol usa of a hack every other country also. so i can't see how they can justify this.

besides, as i've said before, it's what gary found and subsequently told about, that stirred up the US military beehive. not the hacking. there were reportedly other hackers in there too. so what about them?

isp routers

can never be trusted. because the companies providing them can never be trusted.

i've been a BT customer since day one, using proper kit from a manufacturer (not isp). one day BT sent over a free shiny new router which i subsequently ignored. then few days later got a call from BT asking if it arrived, and then asking why i hadn't plugged it in. i told them why and said the thing they sent is still in it's plastic and they can come get it. several similar calls occurred over the following weeks where they tried to persuade me to plug it in. told them it'll never happen. eventually the calls stopped. the router is still here somewhere unopened...

although many have probably had similar experience, it's interesting for others to know about just how much BT want their customers to use their dodgy kit. and also to know that it's better to use a proper generic router that you alone have full control of.

simple. greed.

there wouldn't be this whole hoo-ha if the recording industries etc (big business) wern't so greedy and blatantly profiteering.

i'm with Paul Donnellly on this.

i too have created and been a part of creating many things (songs, paintings, graphics, designs etc), and have also given it all away free, or made it publically available for free.

ok, so i don't rely on these creations to earn a living, but i could. understand that. so why would i choose to give away what i create in my own time with my own resources?

simple. i have a job and earn an honest living like most, (excluding gvt.). and i not only get great pleasure from giving and helping others, but i also understand that in this existence you get only what you give (in the end).

honesty?

great commenting as per usual folks.

my perspective on this is a simple one. never take what does not belong to you. what goes around comes around..

all these people with all this information, and unless a.) they're staring their own related business, or b.) has/will have an unethical employer who wants that info, the data is generally useless. if they're caught with it, then what?

if they told a potential employer they have this information, they would never be hired (unless specifically to get that information), because the interviewer would immediately realize that this potential employee will most likely steal their data.

whatever happened to simple honesty and trustworthiness?

it doesn't matter if you have been mistreated. that doesn't give the right to mistreat in return. nobody ever said that life was fair, so don't expect it to be.
