O2 buckles under 3G iPhone demand

Adam Foxton..

maybe its because we all (most of the posters in london/nottingham/milton keynes) live in the UK , which is currently on BST... and the comments timestamps are all in GMT, so are an entire hour different? so picking 5 mins here or there is stupid?

liars!

I have just picked up my shiny new 16GB iphone from the O2 store on the strand london, where they are just filing out all the paperwork and sending people off with UNACTIVATED phones.

apparenlty it coudl be a couple of DAYS before they get thru all the paperwork and data inputting and actually get around to activating our contracts.. this has been going on since 8:02 this morning and its 10:30 now.

how exactly is this "swimmingly" ? i have a brand new phone which i have paid for, that i cant use because their systems have crashed YET AGAIN

joel beat me to it, but the BBC isnt adding all this traffic to the network, the users downloading it are, and they are already paying for the privaledg!. if the isp's arent charging enough, that is their trouble

i happen to read el reg a lot, but you dont see my isp demanding that el reg pay them for my downloading

and in reply graham, its NOT a compulsory licence, you CHOOSE to have a TV, you need a licence. feel free to chuck away your tv and tear up your licence,

you are paying for a service (quality public service broadcasting (their remit - the argument over whether this is what they provide is an entirely differnet matter)) it is not compulsory, if you dont wish to watch tv, you dont need to pay for the license either.

eBay gets negative feedback about ban on negative feedback

have you ever actually USED ebay??

what a complete load of crap.

people saying obvoiusly the seller is ok - they dont send out goods until you have the money.

evidently they have never had a paypal dispute. i have had paypal REMOVE money from my paypal account, because they decided the buyers was in the right (apparenlty they claimed their account was hijacked) - AFTER i had already transferred the money out of paypal - thereby sending my paypal account WAY WAY into the red!!! (of course paypal woudl have just resorted to legal action/debt collectors to get my account back to zero)

as for whether you are a business or not - i thiknt hey rules governing whether the distance selling legislation applies to you or not are something along the lines of "if you are selling multiple copies of the same item - and for a profit - then you are a business and Distance selling regulations apply"

so *I* was out of pocket - even tho as several morons on here state "you already have the money"

the ONLY negative feedback i have receieved was from a buyer - who it turned out i was unable to contact because his REGISTERED ebay e-mail address (AND paypal address) - he no longer owned!!!! when i phones him (mobile only!) to ask him to verify his actual address in some way - he refused adn started demmanding a refund - at which point i explained he had legally bought the goods, and as soon as he supplied me with evidence of his address i was very happy to despatch them

Bank turns London man into RFID-enabled guinea pig

card numbers

there were initially some problems with people skimmed card details from AMEX cards in america then using them for internet purchases, they stopped this practise by simply giving cards two numbers, one printedr on the card, and a seperate number for the RFID. that way if someone skimmed your RFID number - it would not be accepted online as AMEX could tell there was no way for you to access that number from your card, so it must have been skimmed

a simple solution

Unlimited

I am with eclipse and while it is one of the more costly options (£29.99/month), i get unlimited 18 hours a day, and a 50GB limit between 6pm-midnight, and it throttles (only between 6pm-midnight) after that, which isnt too bad since 50GB/month for just the evening period is probably enough for most people.

But i am surpirsed that there arent more premium services, they must recognise that there is a demand for this, people who would be willing to pay more to be able to do more, yet a lot of ISP's seem to have their top of the range product as "unlimited 8MB***, tiny text: 20GB/month cap" and then nothing above that,

perhaps its just that if they did offer a premium product it would be like admitting that their "unlimited" offers are nothing of the sort?

Amazon defies French courts over shipping costs

Chris McFaul

MArk

i think the whole point is that they CANT give a discount of the cost of the shipping - since that would be over 5%....

the french courts are saying that the free shippping is the equivalent of an illegal discount - so to simply offer them the illegal discount instead really woudlnt be helping???

anonymous coward

i missed if someone answered your specific question, but the latest release of AnyDVD shreds both blu-ray and HD-DVD encrytion AND the newer BD+ on new Blu-Ray discs.

personally im pro-blu-ray, mainly because both my laptop and desktop can burn to the 50GB discs which is very very useful for backup!

however - one point to note for people claiming superior picture and sound is that sadly, because actually encoding a movie is a very skilled job (and a bit of a black art) very often studios (well.. just one studio now...) will simply use the same encode on both discs, so the "extra space " on the blu-ray is going to waste (sony are trying / offering help to studios to get them to encode movies at higher bitrates, but of course that doenst always yield noticably better results).

i have about 50 movies in HD, 10 on HD-DVD, 40 on Blu-Ray
