Of course we should have the freedom to walk the streets unmolested by twats. But

a) you know the law in the UK is never about the vic & never will be - the crime is against the Crown.

b) This is about the plod being bone idle, whatever bullshit excuse they trot out. They are the last people to give a toss about anyone's rights... except their rights of course(like if they trip over a kerb "investigating" a robbery )

They'd love to bring back backseat confessions & all that lovely 70's style nastiness in a flash. They're bound to interpret any kind of law to do with any human rights in the most stupid, sulky way as possible in the vain hope that said laws will look stupid & will be forgotten about & they can go back to nicking who they like.

Maybe, but 'orrible old junkies of my acquaintance who are the sort who do this stuff would have caned the ATM card from all directions then sold said laptop on very quickly, a new Mac would get you a lot of drugs. Not that helpful really, because now he appears legit, so if you drove it off, you'd no longer appear to own it (?) although I suppose he isn't insured etc.

In fact, sooner or later its going to be impounded, I think when the insurance/MOT comes due, if its on the road - you bet they won't tell you if it has been impounded. The whole thing sounds like you have a civil case against the police, surely? Unless of course, they have some government-granted loophole.

Nothing shocks me about the filth's behaviour. What is really shocking is that not one of them has ever been successfully prosecuted for murder or manslaughter despite 1433 people dying since 1990 after "some contact" with police. I know they're not all dodgy but I don't think words are adequate to describe the horror that at least some of those must have experienced.

I've surprised myself TBH by how angry I am about that :-)

Re: The ads don't work

Funnily enough, the products mentioned in the original song don't require any advertising to sell very well. With the probable exception of nicotine. No-one(unless already addicted) would buy that if it were made illegal - it doesn't do anything except addict you.

Re: @Magani - Audience or client?

Advertising is far more about brand awareness than it is about specific buying decisions. A lot of people will buy a product because they've "heard of the company" that makes it rather than one made by they haven't. Especially if price isn't a huge issue for them.

And if it is, then the ads probably weren't targeted at them anyway.

Retroactively inserting ads into old content is an obscene idea - I'd go totally apeshit if ads were inserted into the aforementioned Casablanca. I think it would bother me far more than, say, the Pope & the Queen being gang-raped by baboons on live TV as a comparison*

Re: @Will Godfrey

Although I think the phrase is meant to refer to the "unknown unknowns" that are hard or impossible to spot. Its hard to predict, say, something catching on in a mass way, or being rejected in the same way for example. I don't know if its overstated, but wasn't mobile texting a bit of an afterthought that no-one expected to become so popular for example.

I do agree that its used as a cop-out to avoid being blamed for not thinking of the unintended but blindingly obvious consequences.

People stating "laws" like that is really annoying though - "the Law of Averages" being my favourite non-law. Almost as annoying as saying "its only a theory" when referring to say, evolution. </rant>

The essence of confidence trickery

For these things to work , you need suckers, i.e. people who regard themselves as law-abiding, but get a frisson of excitement from eg buying "dodgy" goods down the pub etc(that they think are stolen designer clothes that "fell off the back of a lorry", but really are legit counterfeit rubbish). Any sensible person knows you're unlikely something for nothing (or higher returns than you'd realistically expect) but suckers love to think they've got an inside track, even though for that to be true, it would have to be illegal or just completely made up. Just tap the side of your nose & they'll come running, the mugs.

Like the "victims" of Madoff, they really are asking for it - never give a sucker an even break :-)

There's definitely a Darwinian component in this sort of fiasco.

Also, in the mind of most journos(& everyone else) "statistics == data" is true, i.e. a statement like "8 out of 10 owners etc." is a pieces of statistical analysis as far as most are concerned.

Correlation, significance, probability, regression etc. are all completely meaningless to all journalists it would seem. The only stats measure ever used is the arithmetic mean, even when a median value would be far more informative(salaries for eg) and anything that indicates spread like standard deviation etc is never, ever mentioned on pain of death( apparently).

Yes, you've highlighted the bizarre nature of the US prison system, where whatever crime you've committed, the punishment is your jail time plus being raped violently repeatedly, without the rapists being prosecuted for it.

It seems that Americans regard being raped in prison as part of the punishment you deserve. This doesn't happen in UK prisons because we live in a developed nation unlike the US, which cannot claim to be at all civilised until they do something about it. Plus there are 80,000 prisoners on any given day in solitary confinement.

In the UK for example, in 2004, there were 40 prisoners in solitary over the whole year.

Its hard to see how the Telegraph will fare any better than any other paper - did the article describe what the Telegraph's plan's were for coping with inevitably shrinking circulation?

When people like my 81 year old Dad(who isn't a neophile silver surfer by a long chalk) are stopping buying newspapers( the Torygraph, funnily enough) because, for example, he says, "I get all the news etc. I want from the TV & Internet so I'm not wasting money on a paper when I read less than half of it anyway" then they obviously need a strategy quickly.
