Shock: Brit capital strips Uber of its taxi licence

Steve Cooper

Re: 40,000 drivers out of work

Maybe the legit private hire companies wouldn't want the ex-Uberites

Global Switch suffers uptime blips at London Docklands DC

Steve Cooper

According to a tweet I read earlier they don't even have proper dual site power feeds. Luckily for us, our WAN provider was able to tolerate the Global Switch failure with hardly any issues.

WannaLaugh? Funsters port WannaCrypt to Commodore, Cisco, Nintendo and Tesla

Re: Does anyone seriously use the in-car stuff ?

So just like Android Auto (or even better with screen mirroring)?

Wakey wakey, app developers. Mobile ad blocking will kill you all

Steve Cooper

Bandwidth saving

I wonder what percentage of mobile data traffic Three have found is used by advertising that they are able to block? It might free up say 10% of their network utilisation which is another win all-round.

NEW ERA for HUMANITY? NASA says something 'major' FOUND ON MARS

Steve Cooper

New Scientist has just tweeted we'll learn what the spectrometer on board the MRO has found. The mars (sarcastic) rover also tweeted it's all about something from HiRISE.

EDIT - Ah there you go, flowing water found.

EDIT 2 - (probably)

It's alive! Farmer hides neglected, dust-clogged server between walls

Steve Cooper

Ahh I've seen that too!! It's standard Ethernet's fault for being so tolerant...

MORE Windows 10 bugs! Too many Start menu apps BREAK it

Steve Cooper

These people saying they'll wait a while for bugs to be found before upgrading... but we need people to upgrade to find these bugs :)

Anyway, I won't have any non Windows 10 machines in my house by the weekend (ignoring Windows 2012 servers and embedded devices).

Steve Cooper

Re: idiotic attitudes all round

A proven track of creating 'rubbish' that has been the most popular desktop operating system in the world for the last 3 decades.

BONK! BONK! Windows 10 whack-a-mole – Microsoft still fixing bugs

Steve Cooper

Re: Epic or epoch?

How about a Raspberry Pi running Windows 10?

We put Windows 10 on a small fondleslab: STILL not ready, 3 days to go

Pluto probe brain OVERLOAD: Titsup New Horizons explained

Steve Cooper

Well it mentions 128GB storage, and

(128 gigabytes) / (1 kbps) = 32.449295 years

Goodbye Vulcan: Blighty's nuclear bomber retires for the last time

Steve Cooper

There's one at Southend (XL426) which is capable of taxiing under its own power (did it at the weekend when XH558 flew overhead and gave it a goodbye), and they have open days where you can get up close and personal with it.

Philae warms up nicely, sends home second burst of data

Steve Cooper

Re: Over engineered?

Turns out the Beagle 2 was not a *complete* failure as we've now seen pictures of it where we can see that the probe landed successfully, but failed to unfold itself properly on the Martian surface. Two, maybe 3 petals unfolded, unfortunately they all had to open to perform any communications.

Facebook's Open Compute could make DIY data centres feasible

Steve Cooper

"even choices on something as small as a network can impact the design of your data centre"

As small as a network? The investment in the network can outweigh the investment in the compute hardware in my experience. The network is the foundation of everything you put into the DC.

Microsoft volume licensing site serves up customer details

Steve Cooper

@PaulW

The trick is to use the site before 1PM - when our friends across the pond wake up the site dies an absolute death.

Spirit rover clocks up six years on Mars

Steve Cooper

Other Rover's donning his RAC jacket as we speak

Because Oppotunity's on the other side of the planet - might take a few years to get there!

London's stock exchange crashes again

Steve Cooper

Windows

I reckon you'll find many a mission critical system runs on Windows... We run ours on a mix of Windows, Solaris and RHEL just to keep us busy :)

Steve Cooper
Go

Normal service will resume shortly....

14:00 according to http://www.londonstockexchange.com/global/incident/incident.htm

Would love to know details on this - looks like a comms issue to me, not a core trade platform problem. Do they use BT Radianz for their connections?

First Windows 7 beta puts fresh face on Vista

Steve Cooper

Give it a go!

I definitely recommend actually trying it out before saying a single word on it. I've put it on my trusty old HP nc6000 P-M1.6Ghz, 512MB laptop and it runs better than XP did and looks a lot nicer too. After crowbar-ing in some chipset drivers (to be fair this machine is probably 5 years old) to get the AGP working it's nice! I have no reason to get rid of it really.

NASA's nuclear Mars tank is go

Steve Cooper
Flame

The chances of anything coming from Mars...

That laser is a bit death ray like from The War Of The Worlds isn't it? Bit weak in comparison though - can't see it vapourising a local martian....

Submarine cable cut torpedoes Middle East access

Steve Cooper

Just Flag?

Anyone know if this is just Flag's cable or also Sea-We-Me 3 or 4 too? The Sea-We-Me's carry more than Flag IIRC down to India.

Beeb's iPlayer reaps streaming traffic dividends

Flash vs Media Player

I know many people moaned about the non open Windows Media player version before the flash one, but I wish they kept that option there if you wanted it. On Windows, using Media player was so much better quality than their Flash one (and so is Channel 4's 4oD).

Also, why 7 days and not 30?

CompuServe France headed for the knacker's yard

Steve Cooper

Just yesterday

I happened to discover WINCIM hidden away on my PC under a multitude of backup directories - and I tried it and lo and behold my old account still works! Can still log in using telnet to gateway.compuserve.com too but it's quite slow, and frankly, pants.

We were chatting last night how in the old days (10 years ago or so) we used to use the chatforums (chatbforum or chat1 anyone?) and it was pretty safe from any of the dodgy freaks out there these days.

Oh how I loved dialling up at 9600 and being online for so many hours just to get a few pages over Mosaic!

Now those were the days.

Microsoft calls in the builders for Dublin data centre

Steve Cooper

Some connectivity yeah

All Irish Internet traffic goes via London - the government has been asked to look into sorting out another path that doesn't rely on London. I hope they're not relying on Eircom for their comms and do it all themselves though!

Oh and it's not Prime Minister Bertie, it's an taoiseach Bertie...

@Derek Williams - I assume this location's somewhere near Cherrywood? I've just moved to London from Dublin so have some interest where it is.

Public tracks down Gordon Bennett

Steve Cooper

Go do the Gordon Bennett route

It's in Kildare, Laois and Carlow in Ireland

BOFH: The bastard wants to know

Steve Cooper
Stop

@Mark Cavanagh BUFH

Just read the whole sorry 12 episodes - seems pretty old (talk of megs of space being useful).

It's really crap actually - don't bother reading them anyone!
