i think the issue here could be that newsbin makes a rather large sum of money for this "service". most of the sites i have seen that link to content (you can include google) do not charge you for the privilege. profiteering off selling access to copyrighted material... well what did they expect?
is autorun renamed to something different in windows 7 cos it is still happily working for me (64 bit home premium).
Steen Hive - it opens up the explorer window when the device is ready, saves me having to go start, my computer. i also use autorun for having custom icons for my partitions (i have 5). it was nice to do this for usb sticks too. always seemed to impress people at internet cafes etc (yeah i know being cute for no reason haha).
security essentials has picked up any bad versions of autorun so far for me (e.g. copying files to friend's usb sticks or wiping mine having used it outside)
i power down my computer every day when i don't need it (go out, watch tv, go to sleep). i saved an average of 25% on my electricity bill. on my side i don't understand why the rest of the world leaves their machines on when they don't need them (like i used to cos i thought it was better for the os cos some nerd know-it-all told me).
Morris: cant do anything but agree. i'm afraid they are all true.
Alan: perhaps that is because you have learnt everything along the way. try giving ubuntu to john smith and asking him to set up a wireless network or sync his itunes downloads to his iPod. with windows its easier. surely you cannot disagree? don't get me wrong, linux is great - i use it on my server - but these booklets are not intended for us tech geeks.
interesting what you say there. im not sure i agree. for example you pay by credit card for an item online. you don't receive any item. you can claim your money back from your credit card supplier can you not?
im not suggesting that western union should do the same thing but if they do receive numerous complaints about the same person time and again ripping people off, surely they should take some kind of action. for one thing it is giving western union a bad name even, as you rightly point out, that they have not done anything wrong themselves.
ahh western union. their terms desolve all responsibility for any transactions. i have a case where someone is selling domestic airline tickets. they collect the money through western union (since it is directed at tourists), .....then no ticket is issued and no further contact from said scammer. western union say its not their problem.
even contacted yahoo web hosting since the scammer advertises his services that way... they also declined to take any action.
im not a lawyer so i don't know the legal side to western union... common sense says they should be hauled in front of a court, but almost never does common sense tie in with the law.
apple have their own updater that seems to run hmmm... not very often. once a day maybe? once a week. im not entirely sure. perhaps the programs search for an update then launch the updater to perform the update. makes a lot more sense than yet ANOTHER process running all the time.
im a little bit stumped here. if they didnt include IE then how the hell could you download your browser of choice? (yes i now us techies probably have installers on other drives but most people have one drive and one partition with a new install, they are going to have trouble getting online at all).
if they had to include a selection of browsers to choose from whats to stop the lawyers insisting they include every browser avaiable - now that would be messy.
do correct me if im wrong here and just totally missed the boat

The iPodService.exe (sp?) service runs as LocalSystem and iTunesHelper.exe runs as the user currently logged on. These things probably communicate with each other.
Can this combination result in a privilege elevation exploit due to this or some other vulnerability? Because this would be a "critical" problem to me, as it could grant admin access to non-admins, and allow all sorts of abuse."
Personally i disable both.
installed sp3 using windows update. it hung first time during install. cancelled it. ran windows update again. went straight to install as i guess the file had already been downloaded and seemed to patch everything properly. i have noticed a slight speed increase and everything feels a bit cleaner.
im not a fan of windows at all, but this seems to work well.
i was working in a restaurant in charlotte street (yes red light district in soho) and i had a guy threatening me with a 10 inch knife at about 11pm on a saturday night. on calling 999 they said (in a scottish accent) that they couldnt help me unless i was able to give my postcode (i guess they had no idea where soho was??). Given my predicament at that time, funnily enough the postcode of said store did not jump to the front of my mind.
hmmmmm which kids know their post codes these days?
