O2 tries something completely new: Honesty

Sim Only

The sort of bad practice that this is trying to get round is exactly the reason I went Sim only / pay monthly a couple of years back - I can change my phone whenever I like, and my "contract" is for the next month.

Without stating which provider I'm with, it's an O2 subsidiary, and rhymes with BiffBaff...

Because it's (not) there.

Who killed ITV Digital? Rupert Murdoch - but not the way you think

On Digital's lack of quality

At the time I had both OnDigitial and Sky; OnDigitial's picture quality was noticeably inferior to Sky's (and in fact Freeview still is to this day).

I mostly had the OnDigital box for time shifting - hooked up to a Video Recorder, it was decent enough for that.

Oh and I know quite a few people even to this day who state the "I hate Murdoch" argument.

I too applaud you for this

"I realize I didn’t win any science-scoops competition with this story. I’d rather understand what’s going on and explain it than be the first to run with the press release."

You have written an erudite article, that helps explain a very weird phenomenon. Thank you for taking the time to understand and explain it.

One Way Trip

Actually, his plans for a one way trip aren't that outlandish.

Realistically if we (as mankind) want to go to Mars, we have to acknoweldge that it is likely to be one-way, or extended stay.

Throughout history this has been known - look at the settlers to the Americas or the Antipodes.

Even during the moon landings it was though, privately at least, that the trip might be one way.

Mole claims Toshiba to terminate HD DVD

3 to 1 == 75%

Has anyone else noticed that if BD is outselling HD-DVD by 3:1, that's exactly the same ratio of studio films that BD and HD-DVD have (75% and 25%)?

So does this actually tell us anything?

All we (as consumers) want is a dual player.

Consumer service

This will always be a "consumer" service, as those of us with knowledge will either buy the DVD and rip it (Handbrake is very good at this) or just download the series anyway.

And as the majority of people with an AppleTV are early adopters like me, who have hacked their boxes to play all codecs, this doesn't really appeal.

Yes, I know ripping stuff for the AppleTV is slow (H.264 encoding is very slow) but ripped content on my AppleTV vs. the original DVD, and I think the ripped content looks just as good, if not better!

Sky takes ball and goes home

Up to date shows

Whilst admittedly some of the shows on SkyOne are a few months after their US, several are a few days after, or even ahead.

Lost is shown the Sunday after it is shown in the states; ditto 24. At the moment Sky One are actually ahead of the US for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis - viewers have been getting the world premiers of these shows.

We also had the same situation with BSG back int he first series (admittedly we're now several months behind on the third series).

Given that, and the fact that by the time shows like Lost Series 3 actually reach the VOD market on Virgin (August I beleive), the DVDs will be out, I think Virgin have shot themselves in the foot with this.
