Hands on with the Intel-powered Orange San Diego

Darryl
Trollface

Attention Caleb Cox

Please note that in all future articles, you are NOT allowed to like anything to do with Intel (or Orange, not sure which) and whatever you do, do NOT compliment any features that you like on handsets that are not on the approved list as supplied by the above commentards. If you do, you will immediately be labeled a corporate shill who only regurgitates marketing materials.

That is all

Good luck with that

Re: Methinks he doth protest too much...

No, but using that as a justification for not using one is not very bright. Consider the following two sentences:

My house has never been broken into so I don't need any locks - they're just a waste of time and money.

My neighbor's house was broken into even though he has locks, which proves that locks are a waste of time and money.

"Many users coming online today may never use a desktop machine"

Is it just me, or does that comment remind anyone else of the "Paperless office" comments of the '80's and '90's? I think it's going to be a while before people do everything on their phones and/or tablets.

Steve Jobs' 'private Apple spaceship' seeks public love

I think it's more a comment on Apple trying to sell this to the public and council by going on about all the green spaces and restaurants and stuff, but the reality being that no-one but Apple being able to use them.

My thoughts exactly! In fact, I think we should go a step further and ban Brussels sprouts completely. That would probably reduce humans' direct greenhouse gas emissions by 50%

Antitrust probe looms over Windows RT 'browser ban'

Darryl

I can't see a problem with this. I thought the basis of the original antitrust probes and decisions was that Microsoft had a monopoly position in the desktop PC world, and that was why they were forced to open up to the other browsers. MS has anything but a monopoly in tablets.

And the argument about ChromeOS being OK blocking browsers is a strawman. If you can block browsers because someone can just install another OS on their machine, then the original MS antitrust legislation should be voided as well - there are dozens of Linux/Unix variants that can be installed on any desktop PC alongside or instead of Windows.

I've been using Spybot S&D for years - mostly on friends' PCs. You know - the "This f-ing thing is too slow. Should I go buy a new one?" crowd. When I install and run Spybot and it removes a few thousand toolbars, smiley-face generators and tracking cookies, all of a sudden the thing is magically much faster.

Sony blames record $5.7bn loss on everything but Sony

Darryl

Re: why the hate?

Something I don't see mentioned very often is Sony's horrible CD players, whether built into a portable stereo, car deck, or standalone component (especially the old carousel ones). I don't think I've ever heard of one lasting for more than a year after the warranty has expired.

As for their TVs, The Trinitron and Wega were pretty nice (if a bit pricey) but their new LCDs are no better than most of the other major brands, and you're still paying a premium because they say "Sony" on the front.

Re: Thank You!

I have at least a few users who used to complain to me about how their XP machines were 'always bothering them' about wanting to restart after installing updates, so I decided to watch closer to see what was up... Turns out they never did actually let them restart, so of course they were being nagged. Once I explained to them that if they actually let the machine restart (or shutdown at the end of the day) then it wouldn't constantly bother them, the complaints dried up.

Sony outs its first Ultrabook

Darryl

@Blank Reg - Cheapo ultrabook

Not likely - seems like the average price for these 1366 x 768 ultrabooks is in the $1200 range (see about 146 other ultrabooks reviewed on El Reg for examples), so all you're getting for a whole crapload of money is thinness

Darryl

Is it just me

...or are all of these things sounding like exactly the same thing with a different logo stuck on the front? Must make it easy for hardware reviewers... Just a few checkboxes:

__ 1366 x 768 glossy screen

__ SSD

__ Not so great battery life

__ Very thin

__ Alumin(i)um (at least on the cover)

__ Ridiculous price

__ Not much room for expansion/peripherals

Congratulations! It's yet another "Ultrabook"

Computer nostalgia is 10 PRINT 'BOLLOCKS'

Darryl
Pint

Alistair, I have to say I'm definitely getting a few good chuckles out of your articles. Keep them up!

Plus, I can report that adding the semicolon to cause "BOLLOCKS" to scroll all over the screen worked on the TRS-80, even giving you a nice diagonal scrolling effect, but on the VIC-20, it just printed it in 5 or 6 vertical columns, so you didn't get the sense of movement.

Re: Good Article

Possibly not allowed by copyright laws in different countries, but (at least in the US) Kindle users can lend books to other Kindle users, depending on whether the publisher has enabled the feature. Basically it copies the book and transfers the 'license' to read it to the recipient's Kindle for a couple weeks. The loaner's Kindle will refuse to open the book while it's on loan.

I know, the caveat about whether or not the publisher allows the feature is a little ridiculous, but at least the feature exists...
