At one government building the authorities would call an exercise "CHECKERS". This was a codeword broadcast on the internal Tannoy system and it meant that everybody including the (very) senior staff & any visiting Government ministers immediately had to challenge their neighbour(s) to show their official pass. Not infallible but it was better than nothing and meant the bosses were shown to be included

Re: The Kids Are Not Alright

I am 83 and for weight I'd write 22lb or 22oz or 22g or 22Kg. For cost/price I'd write £22 or 22p or £0.22 (or, in olden days, 22d)

It was only a few years ago that I found out that MS Word underlines spelling errors and grammatical errors using different colours - I am red/green colour blind

Working for a large Government department in the 1980s I was an inexperienced programmer given the task of making two Commodore PETs talk to each other using IEEE488/GPIB. The resident "computer specialist", accustomed to IBM/Amdahl and the like, stated that this was impossible - there could be only one master on IEEE488/GPIB. I had recently read something in BYTE about tokens and the like so, helped by Raeto Wests invaluable handbook, I cobbled something together in 6502 assembler and demonstrated it to the hierarchy. The system was still running when I was promoted and moved a couple of years later.

When I tried to log in just now (7:20pm Sun 10 May) after a routine purge of cookies, etc., the system told me that my email address did not exist. I've been a signed up member of TheRegister for several years.

To prove that the sytem was actually quite correct, I was able to create a new account using the same email address without receiving a "email already exists" error
