At the risk of appearing thing, I'm not sure I get this.
The bulk of these people will be basic home internet users with a cheap, crappy router / ADSL modem and a dynamic IP address.
Presumably they'll have unplugged the router at some point, or had to reset or replace it in the intervening time.
Do the ISP's keep track of who had what IP at what time? Or is the IP recorded at the time then the data sat on for a year before sending a threatening letter? Isn't there a six month deadline on doing anything about this? (the last question being legal, rather than technical)

I know how non-existent data security and privacy is but I find a useful tool for keeping track of and leaving messages for friends who live in different areas or countries and my family in Australia.

Quite an interesting story though, I wonder if we'll get any stats at a later date about how many systems are compromised by this.

I remember reading something interesting recently that's only just been disclosed after the mandatory 50yr diplomatic secrecy clause. At the end of the 2nd world war france offered to surrender their sovereignty to join the UK, (mainly for defence purposes) but were told they simply weren't good enough to be English.
In response to this they asked to join the commonwealth, and were rebuffed even for that!
Ever since that little bombshell came to light there's been growing anti-english sentiment in france apparently and this is just the latest petty manifestation.
Ultimately we all know why the french wanted the channel tunnel built - if the Germans invade again they can be in London with their hands up that much faster.

Oh, and as for 40-80watts? Do you know anything about graphics cards? They frequently struggle to get mid range cards draw that little. Go check what an 8800GTX draws you muppet.

I suspect it's because the 9's have been an utter failure. They're still using the G92 core and last time I looked they couldn't get either the 9800GTX or 9800GX2 to out-benchmark the 8800GTX!
Although that's supposed to be driver related it's still piss poor.
Wikipedia is without doubt a huge part of the IT world and one of the most clicked on websites going.
The reason the register keep writing about it DrXym, is that it's a joke. A well known, well published joke and everyone already knows the punchline. If they stopped behaving like a bunch of power-hungry adolescent twats they might attract less negative publicity.

Oh my god, so true. I haven't laughed that hard in ages, and the reason for that is I actually READ the windows licence agreeement once (the whole thing!) to settle an argument.

To be fair, it's about time that this happened though. I have signed several 'contracts' and 'terms and conditions' recently that I know to be in breach of at least my statutory (possibly my human) rights.
Companies seem to feel that writing on paper, and making you sign sh*t like that makes it legal. Nope, sorry guys.

The only reason to doubt the PS3 is how early the 360 was released by comparison, and the lead it gained in sales.
Unfortunately, terrible build quality (red ring of death anyone?) poor graphics compared to the PS3 and the lack of a build in HD player will ultimately spell success for it's rival the PS3.
Also, once the war is finally over, and everyone realises that blu-ray is the way forward sales will increase even more I suspect.
And no, I don't own a PS3. Or a 360. Although I'm considering buying one. I'll let you guess which.
