Asus N56VM 15.6in notebook review

MrT

Re: Jolly good...

Not yet - it's got a T7200 at the moment (2x2GHz), not sure what the max is, though T7600 rings a bell (IIRC that's 2x2.4GHz, but might be wrong there). I know it'l be an easy job once the case is apart cos the old one just pops out of the socket.

Mind you, the graphics card has only the single heat pipe - I tried to get them to provide the twin-pipe 7950 instead, but the just gave me one with twice the VRAM. If you've done it, what's the temp like under the []'# keys?

MrT

Jolly good...

...was beginning to think all the full HD panels had got hived off to fondleslabs and fashion icons. My Dell Insipid 9400 is about maxxed now, at 4GB and swapping the HDD out, but it's got a 1920x1200 screen and half-gig Nvidia 7900GS and it's just great to use. The actual difference between 17" at 16:10 and this 16:9 screen is pretty small in real terms due to the format shift.

Nice to hear comments from actual owners too. Have had top quality support from Dell (including swapping the graphics at 4.5yrs old - system is now nearly 6 and still gets 5.3 on Win7 index) ). What's the waranty like with Asus?

Google readying on-device malware scanner for Android

MrT

Re: ABOUT TIME!!!

Yup - it'll probably just scan apps as they install and then do a scheduled check of stuff already on the device... which is the core of stuff like Lookout, for example.

TBH Google could do worse than properly checking stuff on the Play Store, then clearing out the junk, but in the willy-waving battle of the biggest number of apps, neither they nor Apple is keen to be second. So the crud remains in both. I noticed that some apps that are using an icon a bit too similar to others have been pruned, which has culled a few useful things too.

And if it's built into android 4.2 then it'll be a while before it gains any traction...

HP boss Whitman: 'We have to offer a smartphone'

MrT

I still have...

...a 5550 with additional battery. There's what is clearly a SIM port built into it, covered by a nice shiny warranty void sticker, plus an unused third LED on the front panel which points to much earlier plans for some sort of phone capability on a touchscreen handset. They worked quite well using the MS Communicator software over Wi-Fi but it seems the idea of roaming about on mobile networks fell at literally the last hurdle. Rumours of a firmware to enable the SIM socket all led to dead ends at the time so I never got mine modded to that point before the whole smartphone thing took off. As soon as I started using the old T-Mo Vario line there was no need... but I still kept the old iPaq because it was a good device.

Love the DS - if I get a chance (and a few quid) I'd have a DS23. But then my dad used to run a Citroen service dealership and if truth be told and money no object I'd have an SM ... and I'm now really wishing I hadn't sold my Firenza 20 years ago either :-\

MrT

Slightly different...

... to the system in the Citroen DS5 - that's got a bit more power in the leccy motor and loses a bit more boot space. Still, the trade off for the 508 is more useful in this case. But the looks and the cabin of the Citroen are imo better - looked at it and thought it was paying homage to Gerry Anderson and UFO...

Airbus predicts catapult takeoffs and formation flying by 2050

Re: Catapults are designed

I've done that - the club used a Merlin (IIRC) to shift the gliders airborne, which is kind of ironic.

The most unnerving thing about the launches weren't leaving your stomach behind but seeing the glider wings bend up into a U shape against the winch pull then feel the plane jump up about 50m as the cable released. Definitely quicker than a towed launch though...

Re: Mindstorms...

Cheers - glad to help. Mindstorms has already been ported to LabVIEW - check this link for details. They have a patched version of the latest software on that platform, which seems to offer much quicker program speed even on the old RCX. I think there's still an issue with the USB IR Tower not working on 64-bit as well, if that's an issue (IIRC just Win7).

Now, if there was just a way of making the old big brick remember it's firmware when the batteries die...

MrT

Re: Mindstorms...

Actually, searching about I see that version 2.5.4 that I use is now out of date. There's a v2.9 out here for US users and the price is only $23. Given that the UK price is £65 for the same thing, it's worth seeing if anyone in the US can offer a shipping address since the US dealer won't ship to UK...

Not sure if this is an upgrade to the original, which means you'd still need the old software key from the CD cover, or if it comes ready to run.

MrT

Re: Mindstorms...

I use a lot of links to BotMag for the in-class stuff. One like this shows a few alternatives like the RobotC app - about 1/3 down the page. It actually looks a lot simpler as pure code, but the Y7 groups mostly prefer the icons!

Anything other than Technics...

... was a 'toy' in most non-bricksters' minds. I remember buying some of that new-fangled LEGO Space stuff back in the 80's (some kit with a cruiser and drive-out buggy plus three LEGOnauts), long after leaving school. The lady on the till in Woolies said "Aw, it's great to buy birthday presents" and I very nearly said "But it's not my birthday" before realising...

MrT
Thumb Up

Mindstorms...

... is a great tool. I still use the original RCX kits with Y7 (11yr-olds), and the go from nothing to understanding systems and programming in 20 hours - sumo battles and twin-sensor line followers, learning about modifying the machine for better accuracy and the program for things like series or parallel sensing and control. It really inspires the students to get results and they all look forward to seeing who does best. In my experience the prior use of LEGO is about 50/50 between boys and girls, but I scatter the LEGOistas around to make sure they are not in one supercluster...

We still stick to using the LEGO software, but do move on to Scratch and Alice later in Y8 and Y9, which gives us a path to Squeak and ObjC if we need to extend it into GCSEs. That's where the divisions occur, because up to the point where we lose the visual drag'n'drop methods, most students are okay with programming.

Re: The day the tech industry died.

T-Mobile for the Vivacity maybe - a dead ringer for the iPhone 4, more so than the devices from Samsung. Isn't that one made by ZTE, like the Orange San Francisco 2?

I did wonder if any of this is going to be used retrospectively against existing devices that happen to look like future models of iPhone or iPad once they are released. It's not such a mental idea, because if the "design language" of an infringing device is continued into subsequent product lines then this ruling could still be used. So, if iPhone 5 looks too much like SGS3 ...

Shops 'mislead punters' over phone contract prices

They should also...

How talent-spotting boffins help Team GB bag Olympic gold

MrT

There's still a place for talent spotting...

The biggest result for a "discovered" athlete IMO was Adam Gemili - until Jan this year he was concentrating on football as a full-back at Dagenham and Redbridge and yet did brilliantly in the 100m after switching to focus on sprinting. He didn't make the final but he's got plenty of time for that in the future.

Just like a good PE teacher needs to be enthusiastic and motivated so that this is passed on to the students, a good coach will understand an athlete inside out.
