Microsoft tells engineers to curb their token-burning enthusiasm

Re: What is this for?

Nobody. But you have to give the BBC something to hyperventilate hysterically about. Much like the storm in an eggcup about some has-been whose name I already forgot criticising the VAT on fuel policy straight out of the gate. Unfortunately the Conservatives chummed the waters and now the media are all over changing governments using non-stop on-air gibberish. The coverage of Burnham taking over was embarassing in its banality to the extent that the idiot "Royal correspondent" was speculating whether he would use the entrance Starmer couldn't use 10 mins earlier because of renovations. No you twat, because the renovations are still occurring. FFS.

Re: What is this for?

I would be curious to know if the UK would still prevail as readily if the Falklands War occurred again today given the apparent hollowing out of the armed forces.

Re: Slot machine

"If AI is so good, why it can't get the solution right the first time?"

In my experience, because its training data is two years out of date. I recently started playing a bit (computational biologist here). It's useful in a general way, but the details are the problem. I frequently found it was assuming file formats that were no longer correct, APIs that have changed, function calls that changed etc etc. It was *kind of useful* but I don't think it was any faster or "better" than simply reading the man pages given how much time I spent correcting major goofs. I'm now even more skeptical of the "scientific agents" which are the latest snake oil.

Burnham backlash: UK Digital ID plans in peril if Manchester mayor succeeds Starmer

aardvarkus

Any Millibrain can see Burnham won't do any better. The country is basically ungovernable at the moment due to the deeply entrenched problems that have taken decades to accumulate. It's like atheroscelerosis, and just as hard to reverse. The only thing that will fix it is when demographics once again reverse and/or the welfare bill is no longer crushing the rest of the country.

dBase debased: Database titan fades to black after 47 years

aardvarkus

My first summer job in sixth form was working at Nuclear Electric to update some old dBase code to compile with Clipper, and simulating weld beads in Turbo Pascal. Fun times. And possibly the last time they let teenagers work on actually-used code for welding together nuclear reactors....
