ARIN heads off IP address land grab

James Findley

Until IPv6 is as good as IPv4, why switch?

IPv4 addresses will get expensive, sure.

But why should I switch when as yet there is no good way of implementing multihomed networks on IPv6?

Ready or not, IPv6 is coming

James Findley

Fred makes a good point.

And not only for the needless route proliferation.

There is no way to have a PI address in v6, which makes it useless for those of us that have more useful things to do with the internet than look at porn.

Apple should start taking enterprise servers seriously

Joke

Now the apple fanboys get to write articles...

I can see the writer of this article *really* likes their products, but this is just silly.

So you are saying that Apple should launch a new server line, in times of economic difficulty, for the small startup company that doesn't want to use Windows or Linux on it's servers has has no existing IT staff. That's a tiny market at the moment, even if the basic idea was good.

Any buisness with existing server infrastructure isn't going to suddenly convert to Apple for the server 'user experience', when the only people that ever directly log on to it are the IT staff. That's a non-starter. And yes, user experience is really what sells Apple products. Noone buys them for their openess, compatibility, performance, stability or security (unless they are spectacularly ill-informed, or just terrible at maintaining other OSes)

I'm not a big Windows supporter, but I don't buy that an Apple server would be automatically more secure. Apple have an atrocious record of managing vulerabilities (even MS score better here), and have had a lot less time to get their server platform to a point where the apps, rather than the OS are more likely attack vectors.

"anyone old enough to remember Unix"

The reports of UNIX's death have been greatly exaggerated.

@ Dunstan

Power6 CPUs are dual core parts - the article is written in a slightly misleading way.

Assuming your application runs well on PPC this should be pretty far up the list of bladeservers, speed wise.

Definately interesting - although personally I plan to wait a little and let them fix any issues before thinking about buying any.

@ Amstrad PCWs

I actually had a full 3d (well it was 3d lineart, not sure if that counts) helicopter sim for my amstrad pcw - pretty impressive for the hardware!

Bad news for Gates and his bank manager...

Mac popularity is gaining enough that moreand more people are bothering to code malware for it.

However, its when there are peices of malware specifially targetting Ubuntu too that Gates will really have to admit he's lost the monopoly and needs to start being nice to his customers again.

GMail shakes IMAP out of coma

RE: RE: This feels nice and familiar....

"Microsoft email client/server solutions don't prefer to settle for IMAP but use some closed and "optimized" protocol of their own"

I wouldnt call it optimised.

Ever tried to conect to a truely remote (as in different country or other very large distance) exchange server?

Microsoft in their wisdom require hundreds of minisclue packets to be sent back and forth to connect, each one waiting on sucessful completion of the previous. this means that with any significant latency in the network connection you can be looking at 5 minute load times for outlook.

Note that that can be mitigated by competant IT management, but that assumes a lot :)

Might be an idea to actually compare the laptops before trying to have an opinion.

The Rock laptop has different (better) specs compared to the ones you posted.

Stop

Stop!

Instead of idiots posting what amounts to "Linux is for geeks only" or "I won't use this there fore its crap" could someone with spare time actually try it out and see what its like?

I agree it would be nice if it supported more formats than MS office (and its not specifed as far as i can see if that includes the new docx format), but its still a nice idea - personally I think its unlikely I would use this unless it really would save me significant time but would be nice to see what others thought of this in practice.

And by the way - I care more about door to door salesmen than I care about whether some random poster prefers Windows, Linux, Mac, BSD, OS2, or whatever. I suspect many share this viewpoint - so why not leave those comments out of here and share them with your friends/partner/co-workers instead?

Oh and no stop would be complete without a carry on!

Sun grabs patent for magneto-hydrodynamic heatsink

Thumb Up

Not a bad idea..

But I would love to see them try to shoehorn it into a 1U case :)

If cost is not too much of a fctor (and if you are buying a decent sun system its probably not too much of a factor) this could significantly reduce the amount of airflow required, leading to quieter and fewer fans leading to quieter and (possibly) more power efficent datacentres.

The real pity is that I dont see this fitting into a blade, which is where some additional thermal performance could really make a difference.
