Is it a bridge? Is it a ferry? No, it's the Newport Transporter

The Newport Transporter Bridge is one of the few remaining examples of this fascinating early engineering concept. Opened in 1906, it carries vehicles and pedestrians across the River Usk in South Wales using a suspended gondola instead of a conventional roadway. Transporter bridges like this were once seen as innovative solutions for wide tidal rivers where tall ships needed clearance. Although only a handful survive worldwide, Newport’s structure remains operational and beautifully preserved — a striking reminder of Britain’s industrial heritage and creative approach to transportation design.
