Rare SCADA bug poses power plant risk

@jerry

True - but most ethernet HMI interfaces and PLCs can be now be remotely edited, (rockwell studio se for instance), which leads to the boxes running them being on the corporate net, so the lazy automation engineer can do it from his desk. So you may not be able to crash the actual IO networks, but you can certainly get to processors and HMIs.

they really do love the accent over here!!

The accent also works with the coppers over here - I have been stopped 6 times for various infractions, (including once having no ID, an out of date tag, an out of date insurance card, and no working wing mirrors), and got off with just a quick "Sorry Officer, I will sort it all out tomorrow sir"). Meanwhile my very pretty, american wife gets a ticket for 40 in a 35zone :o)

Relocate already !!

I worked for the boffins, (as an engineer), for three years in the late ninties and there was the same problem with the Manchester Lab then as there is now. I believe they have a very under powered version of the Diamond synchrotron light source there and it was kept open then due to fears of "local" job losses in the science fields, (I think they also had some ancient super computers). Seems to me that the northerners would be more than happy to move down to pretty Didcot/Chilton.

Civil cases generally follow criminal convictions.

M$ can, and probably will, bring a civil suit for all loses against the ex-employee. The fine is just part of the criminal punishment and will go to the government.

@The Other Steve

There was no "irony, sarcasm and things of that nature" in the posts before mine - just sterotyping. And I don't actually fit in, I'm welsh and they don't have any damned sheep here :o(

I hate sterotypes :o(

Americans are not stupid - just ignorant of particular facts which is exactly the same as us British. I have lived in America for over 5yrs and one thing I know to be true is that there is very little difference between a yank and a brit - all the same types I grew up with in Wales are here in the States. Nearly everyone in the Southern has been polite and helpful in thier dealings with me and my work colleagues are just as intelligent as any I had in the UK.
