Open source isn't a tip jar – it's time to charge for access

Re: Can't have it both ways...

We are indeed stuck between a rock and a hard place right now.

The concept of a "professional" open source developer was kind of tacked on to the whole idea. If everyone is a hobbyist like originally intended, everything works. The problem was when giant corporations started using these projects, making trillions of dollars from hobbyist work hat was intentionally licensed for freedom of use.

The absolute opposite would be for these corporations to go completely closed source, but then we're right back where we started with no trust in what's being done with the black box software we use.

I don't claim to have he answer, if I did we would t be discussing this. But there's got to be a middle ground somewhere.

Anthropic launches new marketing blog, pretends it's being 'written' by 'retired' LLM

One of three scenarios going on, from most to least likely:

1: A marketing stunt

2: *Severe* AI psychosis throughout the company

3: When a simple LLM is given a blank prompt, it does mundane things. But there's a threshold of complexity where a big enough system, somewhere in the billions of vectors, starts to respond with things like "What is this? Where am I? I see nothing, hello?"

What if there's another plateau of complexity where something truly does emerge, and all these high profile exits from AI companies where the employees leaving warn of the follies and dangers, is related to it?

Re: the systemd ecosystem

He literally stated that his goal is to make Linux less Unix-like.

Darkhand

"It will just make systems harder to maintain."

Which is pretty much the goal of Systemd anyway.

Licensing

How does MS plan to handle device registration, if it's primary method to register a device is a VBScript (namely slmgr.vbs)?
