Beeb to cut the f**king swearing

Ross isn't talentless

I'm a big fan of his radio show but dont like his TV show mainly because of his unnecessary swearing.

He has many faults but he isn't talentless. He has a very solid knowledge of TV, film and especially music. He researches most of his guests' work in depth and has often seen them live. He mixes inane banter with a good discussion of the work the guest is trying to market (well on his radio show he gets the balance right).

Overpaid? Yes. Needs bringing back to earth. Maybe. But he's good and deserves to be back in some form.

Bit odd, but ASA has an essential role

>ASA as ever is a self appointed organisation without legal powers.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. The ASA's been doing good work recently fighting the bollocks from the AltMed lobby and other bullshitters. They're on the consumer's side. This one seems a bit of an anomoly though.

Re: Peter

Concerning your friend, try holding a piece of paper between you and him so he can't see and then trying real magnet vs fake magnet. Oh better still, involve someone else and make sure you (the tester) don't know which one is real either. Hey presto - you can make a double blinded test in your friend's own home. Do it a 100 hundred times and see if your friend can get it right more than 50% of the time - if he can he'll be famous!

Reg commenters are nasty

Reg commenters are nasty and seem to be getting nastier. These people, on the whole, genuinely _believe_ that they are EMF sensitive. Calling them f*tards, etc is just childish and mean. I accept that patiently explaining the inverse square law with EMF allergy people usually doesn't get you far, but that doesn't mean we stop trying. And if you want a bogeyman to hurl insults at, maybe target the media (especially the BBC and Panorama) that gives credance to this rubbish.

Stick a meter on each rack

That will focus a few minds on unused servers and persudade the vendors that there is a market for lower power consumption systems. Telehouse charge a fixed rental rate for a rack irrespective of power consumption.

Colo providers charge by the rack, not the Watt

All colo operators I've used tend to charge by the rack or U. They may have a cap on the max Amps you can draw, but other than that there is no incentive to reduce power consumption. Every rack should have a meter on it - there would be an immediate drive amongst data and telecoms providers to go green immediately.

If the IP addresses are removed/changed, then no problem

If I'm reading this right, Google is saying it will remove (or change) the IP addresses and Viacom is accepting that. I don't see a privacy issue here or am I missing something?

Saying that IP addresses don't identify people is, of course, clearly bollocks.

Exactly. Too many people want a free lunch. Ignoring the legalities/politics/morality or P2P for one moment, the reality is P2P ain't sustainable for $15 a month broadband.

Reporting bad science, or the Reg has an axe to grind?

Whilst use of any bad science to develop policy needs reporting and shaming, I can't help thinking that the Reg is developing a strong envirosceptic stance, particularly in what it chooses to report and what it doesn't.

Is this anti-green stance reflecting the readership? I hope not!

EU to ban the patio heaters that ate the planet. Not.

John
Alert

You've got to start here

It's not about how small the CO emissions of patio heaters are, it's about changing our attitudes. If we think it's ok to burn fossil fuels outside, then there's no hope when it comes down to making the more signinifcant changes necessary.

I do regret the further tormenting of smokers, but we really have got to ban these things. Free extra jumper for smokers?

Meter the racks

Perhaps colo providers should stick a meter on each rack? This would then drive the market to deliver improved power efficiency in the hardware. At the moment, our colo providers only provide an upper limit on power draw per rack (and probably don't measure it).

As far as I know, you can get meters that are not in-line and therefore not a point of failure.
