If any other corporation released an operating system like Vista you wouldn't be saying you're waiting for their next operating system. Ballmer is about a thousand yards wide of the mark... again. Google wont need to pay operators to "carry" its marketplace. Ballmers comments are clearly illustrative of an individual who simply does not understand in any way shape or form any business model or marketplace where the operating system itself (Microsoft's cash cow and cocaine like addiction) is not your source of income. Ballmer is a dinosaur who can't get his head around any strategy that does not sound like, "How will this sell more copies of Windows ?"

Microsoft isn't a competitor in Mobile. It potentially loses half the market by default simply because it doesn't even have an operating system that runs on ARM processors. And in this market, most of its competitors are open source. Furthermore, Microsoft simply does not exist in the kind of market that Google aims to both foster and capture revenues from. Ballmer and the prevailing culture within Microsoft is not in touch with where markets and sources of revenue are moving, and I don't believe this corporation is really going to change any time soon. The day is coming when the value of Microsoft shares will be reported in terms of cents rather than dollars.

What you are saying is in fact a fallacy, a leap in logic which requires the reader to ignore information about Icaza, his relationships with Microsoft and Novell, and his active participation in furthering goals which are very much part of Microsoft and Novell's agenda's. You left this kind of material out of the equation. Tell me something, if a man who was once a war hero turned around later and became a serial killer, would the "he's done great things for his country" argument help him in court ? Miguel isn't sometimes called "Anakin de Icaza" for no reason you know.

Translation: Our "initial testers" were desktop Windows XP users who want XP on their desktops, their notebooks, their netbooks, and wont buy an iPhone because it doesn't run XP and they probably don't have any real use for a netbook anyway. Also, they spat the dummy when they couldn't find the Internet Explorer icon thingy.

What you're telling us is that you don't want to do the work necessary to bring a real quality product to market. And that you've got your target market wrong.

If its not "ready for use" when the customer turns it on, thats not the fault of any GNU/Linux distribution, thats your fault.

So basically Apricot, what you're telling us is that you're not nearly as motivated as Asus, or Acer, or Dell, and you therefore don't deserve that piece of market share that others are putting a lot more work into capturing than you are.

As a musician who sooner or later will get around to making some of his music available online I'll say this: IT WILL ALWAYS BE FREE OF DRM !! I want you to listen to and enjoy my music without being restricted and told you can't listen to it whenever and however you like.

DRM is a perverse attack on the listeners freedom and detrimental to the listening experience. Music is among other things, about enjoyment, and DRM is anathema to this. Making it illegal to remove it is even worse.

Furthermore, in the country where I live (Australia), I contend that DRM restrictions are incompatible with Fair Use copyright laws.

Multi-touch trackpad, nice, but I don't really like using the trackpad on any notebook, I find it cumbersome and still end up using a mouse. And I can't just buy another battery for it when the inevitable eventually happens, but have to return the whole notebook and who knows how long it will be before I get it back... Bad call, and an absolute deal breaker for me.

When don't seem notice that your own product is lagging further and further behind what your competitors are offering... And you think you can keep getting away with it... then its only a matter of time... Empires rise and empires fall... Toward their end they are usually dirty and messy and pathetic like this.

Most of our customers are still asking for Windows XP Home or Professional pre-insalled on new systems. Almost all notebook customers either buy an Asus notebook with Vista Business on it, which they can 'downgrade' to XP Pro, or they are buying XP along with the new Vista system and getting us to install it on their new notebook for them. And then we have customers who ask for a dual boot Windows/Linux system. And then we have white box customers, some of whom we know will install Linux, some who will install "their own" copy of Windows.

I don't think Microsoft is willing or able give you figures on how many of those Vista sales are destined to be 'downgraded' to XP or that other increasingly popular alternative.
