Ubuntu 25.10 and Fedora 43 to drop X11 in GNOME editions

scottro

To @mark.. I'd say that if you're using Gnome, for your stated use case, you probably won't notice a difference. I was able to get both dwl (along with dwlb) and labwc (along with the alacritty terminal and swaybg) to work on RHEL10 without much trouble. I have a page on it at https://srobb.net/rhel10.html--when I posted that link previously, it got some downvotes because it still, even if not adding Gnome, meant adding a lot of additional packages, but it's still lighter than Gnome, and for those of us who like minimalist-ish window managers, it might be useful--but I'm badly digressing.

For normal everyday use of Gnome with your description, I don't even know if you'll notice a difference.

Trump can bluster and bluff all he wants, but iPhone manufacturing isn't coming to the US

scottro

Let's see him do one single freakin' thing to help the non-billionaires. So far he's done nothing but try to get revenge against those who were doing their jobs by trying to control his stupidity last time.

And he won the vote. Man, we really are a nation of complete morons. Oh and unlawfully deported lots of people. He's an incompetent idiot who hires other incompetent idiots. Kennedy, Noem--anyone watch her try to define habeas corpus as something giving the president the right to deport people.

And lots of Trumptards still think he's doing a good job.

Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' would create a regulation-free AI hellscape, AGs warn

scottro

We should have gotten inured to these headlines by now. Trump, with GOP support does something {moronic,illegal,something-only-a-facist-would-love} and GOP majority congress and/or basically corrupt court (no surprise, as most were appointed by Republicans) go along with it.

It's like dog bites man, not news. Trump and/or GOP does something that helps people---now, THAT would be news. (People=non-{billionaires,nazi-wannabes,morons}

RHEL 10 quietly leaks ahead of Red Hat Summit

Thanks for the kind words. Gnome bothers me more than Wayland. I've been able to make Wayland able to do most of what I need on my main (FreeBSD-14.2-RELEASE) workstation.

scottro

For what it's worth, on the beta, I was able to get labwc up and running. Haven't tried on RHEL10 yet, but I'm assuming it will be no harder. Might as well spam my page while I'm here, https://srobb.net/rhel10.html. I was also able to get alacritty installed, (tested on RHEL10, not the Beta), so for those who dislike Gnome, it seems that a few lighter window managers may work.

Dems fret over DOGE feeding sensitive data into random AI

Blame the congress--if the GOP had any sense of shame, conscience, intelligence (see MTG) or courage, this wouldn't be permitted--we thought we had it bad in Nixon's day, but the Trump tards seem to think it's a good thing.

Why no one has gone to jail for some of the illegal deportations is another thing we should be ashamed over--if they put an ICE agent in jail for every illegal deportation, it might stop it.

Whistleblower describes DOGE IT dept rampage at America's labor watchdog

scottro

I think it's been said here before, but the only competent person Trump employed was Stormy Daniels. And according to something or other--I read it on the Internet so it must be true--most who voted for Trump would vote for him again. But worse than him are the GOP senators who make it all possible--and Trumptards would probably vote for them again.

Unlike the wars on poverty and terrorism the GOP war on education was successful--as Trump said, he loves uneducated people, that's how the GOP stay in power. And so far, it seems that they';re getting away with it--as for any Trumptards reading this who will say what about when Biden---he should have done what Trump's doing to Fox news and Joe Rogan. So go ahead and touch yourselves while watching either one of them. You're beneath contempt--at least in Nixon's and even Reagon's time, you had some shame.

IBM shareholders asked to back greater lobbying transparency

scottro

Yes, the US has allowed bribery, under the term "Lobbying" for a long time. Trump and friends, of course, have made bribery nothing to hide, one reason the US has moved up in the list of corrupt countries.

DOGE dilettantes 'didn't test' Social Security fraud detection tool at appropriate scale

I can't believe the GOP senate allows this. That these people aren't in jail--that they were allowed to do this in the first place. Trump has shown he is a complete moron, who hires those like himself, in other words morons and incompetents.

A headline could go in each daily paper--Trump is a complete moron and shows it once again--Spineless GOP senate goes along with it.

I wonder if he'll stop elections. Or, if there are elections, if the Trumptards will still vote for him.

I see occasional things, Oh, it's due the Democrats. Puuhlleeze--what is wrong with you people? And Trump, and other GOPers want to hurt education so they can grow more Trumptards.

We deserve this.

Well, now, the latest I hear is that Kennedy thinks everyone should get measles--so, let's start infecting Musk, Trump, and Kennedy. After all, that's what they're preaching right? Next, the Senators who voted to approve Kennedy.

Lawdy, lawdy, we have really gone into a Kakistocracy. As Putin agents in place, we're doing a great job for him. I hope you Trumptards are proud.

US stocks slip as Trump pulls trigger on Canada, Mexico, China tariffs

scottro

Gosh, we really are in a Kakistocracy. It's a word that we in the US better get used to using. We really put the dumb in Free-dumb, and with a few exceptions like Texas representative Crockett, it's pretty clear why eggs have gone up--all the chickens are in the GOP senate and house. (I'm sure someone else has used that line so I apologize to those who have). It wouldn't shock me to find that he is a Russian agent of Putin's. I wonder how many of those farmers who voted for him are happy about it. It's reminiscent of Jim Jones, and the ones who willingly drank the Koolaid in Georgtown, Guyana. (Not to be confused with those who were forced to drink it, meaning the rest of us in this country).

Under Trump 2.0, Europe's dependence on US clouds back under the spotlight

scottro

I don't know why we don't have a blanket headline for (at least) the next 4 years, something like, Trump and Musk, wanting to see their name in the news, did something incredibly stupid, probably unconstitutional and probably illegal today. The GOP senators as usual, tried to defend the indefensible.

What's really sad is that still most of the Trump-tards think he's doing great--till, of course, it hits them, e.g., cops "duh, I didn't think he'd pardon the copkillers," Muslims, "Duh, I didn't think he'd be so pro-Israel," union members, etc. As for the suposedly 51% of white women who voted for him, you really are morons and deserve what happens to him if they wish an abortion.

Trump admin's purge of US cyber advisory boards was 'foolish,' says ex-Navy admiral

scottro

Seriously, are you Trumptards OK with what he's doing? His complete choice of incompetents for his cabinet. Are you really too stupid to see that he promised various things, when he saw he couldn't do them, started trying to distract with more moronic ideas? Are you really OK with him? Do you think he's doing a good job, gutting the FAA, then when a crash comes, blaming it on DEI? If you want to see why nothing's wrong with DEI, look at his cabinet appointees? Are you people in red states really OK, with your senators and congress people (Hey you stupid morons, some of them are women! What happened, DEI take over? )

Are you ok with his attempts to hurt news services that didn't praise him? Suppose BIden had used the powers given him by the court of Trump bootlickers to shut down Fox. He should have. They admitted they made things up to get viewers and were still allowed to call themselves news.

Or are you beginning to see how stupid you were? Are you beginning to be ashamed? Silly question, Trump supporters don't have a sense of shames.

'Tis the season to test the RHEL and AlmaLinux 10 betas

scottro

I've been playing with the RH10 beta and Alma's version on some VMs. It is Wayland only, and at present, only Gnome and possibly KDE are available. I suspect there are many who use RH at work and so will want a home workstation to get familiar with its quirks, but don't want a full DE. I've been able to build labwc, using mostly Fedora 40 srpms, wmenu and foot, a Wayland terminal. I've put in requests for labwc at EPEL, in the hope that when RHEL10 and clones come out, there will be at least one smaller WM version. When I mentioned this on Rocky Forums, one person responded, saying he hoped there would be a Mate version, so I'm guessing that there are a reasonable amount of people who hope for Gnome/KDE alternatives.

Aside from that, most things work as expected There is an epel rpm, though you can't find it with dnf or subscription manager, you have to just download the epel rpm from dl.fedoraproject, and as there's no rpmfusion repo for it yet, I suspect a lot of media content may cause problems, till rpmfusion makes ffmpeg-nonfree, etc., for it.

After seeing my mom and both sister-in-laws go through this, (and being the tech in the family, having to get into the computers), I created a death paper for my wife. I run FreeBSD with dwm, so also made a little script, so that she can boot it into xfce4 and work with that adding to my death document, directories she should check if she can't find something. All the stupid stuff, like the link to pay cable and ConEd (we're in the US), and all the other stuff I could think of that she might need. Whether or not it is in the will, I think everyone should think about what happens if they suddenly pass away. Both my brothers passed very unexpectedly, so I realized that one can't really predict these things. It gives me a modicum of relief, knowing that if I go suddenly, at least she'll have an idea of what to do.

I think it's a very good idea, whether mandated by a government, or just your own common sense.

Trump's pick to run the FCC has told us what he plans: TikTok ban, space broadband, and Section 230 reform

scottro

Like Jimmy Kimmel said, though more nicely--you Trumptards voted for him, you lost too, you just don't know it yet. (He didn't say Trump-tards).

I won't get political, I'll just state facts, and remember you voted for him.

You now have elected a president who is a convicted felon. Also found guilty in civil court of sexual abuse.

You're getting an anti vaxxer in charge of health. Hopefully, this means none of them will get vaccinations.

You're getting someone who was under investigation for sex trafficking, sexual misconduct, and ethics as attorney general.

Of course, Vance is such a snake, I think there's hope he'll have the president declared unfit and take over. He can use these cabinet selections as evidence.

I will say I have no sympathy for any Latins, Muslims, or women who voted for him. Now, you're gonna get what you voted for. Maybe you all think this is a good thing, who knows.

Supposedly, people think that he will help their grocery prices go down or something. A man who managed to bankrupt two casinos. Not making a judgement, just stating facts.

Re: For when listening to the userbase doesn't work

Although it's not fluxbox, labwc is a very good replacement for openbox, with waybar doing some of what tint2 does. I realize this doesn't solve your issue if wayland was the only thing available--and also, I suspect that X will be around for a very long time.

If Trump gets elected, get your tech buying done asap

scottro

Re: Unacceptable price levels?

The politicians won't say it, so let me. If you support Trump, you're either stupid (enough to believe the Republican lies, Fox News, Putin propoganda, putting someone who managed to bankrupt casios in charge, etc.) or you are garbage (supporting mass deportation, police states, cutting medical, trying to put an end to women's rights). The fact that the election is close shows how close to a fasict leaning nation the US has become, and how despite the lack of success of the wars on poverty, drugs, and terrorism, the Republican war on education has been quite successful. For example an Idaho health department no longer allowed to give COVID vaccinations. Every time one thinks Republicans can't be more stupid, or more immoral, they surprise you.
